What They're Saying - The Bulldogs Media Thread - Part 4

Learned one I think it is quite easy to understand we have now proven we do not have anyone to replace him so his value goes up. Just like economics the scarcer the product the more valuable it is.

Why I like Gullan's article was most of his points has only been expressed as directly on social media (bulldogs bigfooty). It is the most direct I have seen in the mainstream media.

Most pundits might have been reluctant to go hard on the dogs in case we got most of the best 22 on the park, made a run for it in the back half of the season and made them look silly. They should have been watching our games more closely, because that would have shown them that the issues went way beyond that.

I don't think we've really played a good four quarters against any half-decent team this year, the closest would've probably been Sydney Rd 3 but even then atrocious goal kicking kept them in it until late in the game. The Pies win looks like a good one now they sit high on the ladder, but otherwise we've been pretty consistently better than the bad teams and poorer than the good ones.

I think Montagna called the dogs "flaky" at some point early on, but I'm not sure that's right. Yes, the best can be really good within one quarter or so but most teams can look good when they get a run on. We have personnel, coaching/tactical and match committee issues that have compromised this season to greater or lesser degrees (depending on your viewpoint) and are just an average team right now. I'd doubt that we're going to lose by 8-10 goals to the Saints and then come out and beat Melbourne - that would be flaky. More likely that the Saints game will be close, and then we'll get comfortably beaten by the dees. That's not flaky, that's playing to your level.

My guess is this will be the beginning of a media pasting, because there could be some embarrassing losses in the next month that will trigger some opinion pieces that will question Bevo's coaching, Bont's captaincy, the list build and everything else. Nothing that most of us haven't said in here either, but it'll all get a good airing in due course.

Talk of Daicos being best first year ever. Firstly they surely are only talking draftees post VFL. Coleman Kicked 100 goals as 21yo in first season.

Is Daicos year any better than Chris Grant's as a 17yo kicking 51 goals in a team that missed the finals I doubt it.

They have this discussion most years, Sam Walsh a few years ago was touted as that.

Pick 4

He’s been very good, hot start, quiet few months and then a big few weeks. Laughable discussion that he could All Australian but the big clubs will always get that press.

  1. It‘s the biggest question in football right now: What has happened to the Western Bulldogs? Last year‘s grand finalists have become boring, average and are not far away from being irrelevant.

Is there a more hackneyed and meaningless epithet in modern football than the word 'irrelevant'? Irrelevant to whom, and with respect to what? Lazy, lazy journalism.

Scott Gullen nailed it in his 5 issues with the dogs it is like he has been reading the dogs bigfooty

Selection why have the dogs played the likes of Schache, Roarke, Scott and McComb for prolonged periods
He’s a dogs fan.

Was it this thread ppl were talking about our media dept?

Had to laugh when I saw a post on Facebook and then a advert on the bulldogs app advertising this week as "supporter thank you" round, then it asked you to buy a ticket!!!

Great to see "hackneyed" get an airing, very under-utilised word. 🙂

Edit: I enjoyed "epithet" too, but I try and sneak that one into my own posts occasionally!

Did everyone download their crowd canvass app for Friday night's game?

The club have a survey out asking for feedback on a whole range of issues.

One piece of feedback I'll give is the best 'fan engagement' is to win games of football, so spend more money on football and less on bulltish fan engagement gimmicks like this and all the other cringeworthy garbage we have to endure at matches.

The one thing that stood out to me in this interview is that Darcy has gone from 203cm to 208cm since he was drafted.

Listening to that SEN interview with Ameet Bains I have completely changed my mind on playing Darcy this year. If he has grown around 5 cm in 2022 I would be wary of putting too much stress on his body. I am not a medico but if the feet problems are related to growth and stress , let the boy relax. the risk might be too high for a few games of development.
