What They're Saying - The Bulldogs Media Thread - Part 4

If his manager actually did his job, you know, looking after his client, then Jamarra might not be in this mess.
That’s the question that seems to be missed. The player managers never have any scrutiny when their client goes of the rails.

We all know it’s because the media get 90% of their stories from the managers.

We have to play the JUH situation as we did with Dunkley - JUH is still under contract next year, so if Geelong or any other club wants him, we have to be adequately compensated. Otherwise, he sees out his contract with us.

Getting screwed over year after year is not an option, so when we have some leverage we have to use it.

Saw this coming a mile away, as soon as Smith was off to Geelong the possibility of Smith being in his ear to go to Geelong was quite plausible.

Fully agree. However if he just runs out his contract we will be in the same position as we were with Smith.

Why I had no issue with Dunkley, a true professional who won a B&F in the last year of his contract and assisted us in making a Grand Final afrer being rejected in his first trade request.

The system favours players and managers

The problem with this is the potential for team disharmony with such a high profile player floating in and out of the club as he sees fit. The real question is how much of an impact is this having on the rest of the playing group?

If it’s not having a negative impact and JUH is generally behaving in a positive manner within the 4 walls, then this approach seems like a no brainer.

Anything JUH I see and hear these days cause my eyes and ears to drip blood.
Better to park the whole issue in a thread of its own.
This. Sick to death of hearing about it and I’m glad he didn’t seem to be at the game on Saturday because it’s all they would have droned on about. Park the whole thing in its own thread

The club can't and won't allow JUH to "float in and out as he sees fit."

If JUH won't commit to the club, it's got to play hardball and not just allow Geelong or Collingwood to lowball us at the end of this season. If JUH doesn't want to commit to training and playing this year and next, his career will be as good as over. You can't stand out of the game for 2 years and then expect to be paid 7 figures. No club would take that risk.

Leverage should also come from Swans and Port, both in need and confident that they can do better than us.

Not so sure Mutt, he might not get 7 figures off the bat but he’ll be sort after none the less and at his age has time to get the super big offers. Clubs will come this year or next hopefully Mara chooses a club that has a draft hand that can satisfy us. Until the AFL gives clubs more power to trade players under contract we are at the players and there manager’s mercy.

I'm not in favour of clubs being able to say to a player when rocks up for an end of year review: "pack your bags you're off to Fremantle" (or wherever). The player has a right to some sort of say in his future. But I do think the system is broken. It's too lopsided when a gifted young player has his head turned by a wad of money or a dodgy under the counter deal. Often at the urging of his manager. Like Real Estate agents, managers love market churn.

I'm sure there are a few possible fixes that don't tip the balance too far the other way. I just don't think the AFL is invested enough in fairness to the smaller clubs to do anything about it.

Yes there are a lot of teams wanting, desperate for a full forward.

Sydney would be the one. Cap space & draft picks with Warner set to go to WA

If JUH can’t get his shit together, he would need to get out of VIC altogether. Not just a move down the highway to Cotton On FC & use family as an excuse, he would need to move away from everyone & everything.

I’m of the opposite view.

If you don’t want to be part of the system then don’t play football.

It is time to stop this rubbish half professional caper and let clubs trade any player at any time as long as they are above a certain contract threshold.

There are many many ways that AFLMedia spin a story out of thin air.

Here are examples of 3 of them...

1. Pull it out of their arse. And set the media agenda for the following days.

2. Ask a leading question and then spin the answer to suit a narrative of convince. Its matters not that Mackie gave the stockist of list management replies.

3. Just follow what everybody else is saying, generate a segment out of it and hope than nobody notices that you'r a bottom feeding piece of shit.

So. In this instance. Its...

1. Jon Ralph. (Using the Cane Kornes. M.O.)

2. Caroline Wilson.

3. Craig Hutchison.

You're right Caro... you don't think.

Probably right in that it would be too much of a shift in power but I would not be adverse to clubs being able to force contracts to be extended (as opposed to shifting them off elsewhere). For example the club allowed to nominate a set number of top tier players, that would subject to the rule. Would have to be early in their careers with other qualifiers (first round picks etc…) and match the offers from revivals. Imagine the better negotiating position we would have been in for Smith if rather than being forced to the draft Smith would be tied to an auto renew contract. No restrictions of trade arguments because there is ability to play and get paid at market value. If a revival wants them they need to pay up or wait for free agency.
