If the stadium has a roof it should be closed. Couldn't care less if the ground was built in the perfect position for the sun. Why would any sports fan be against seeing their sport played in the most perfect conditions?

The fans, players, coaches and commentators all agree so don’t expect the AFL to act on this anytime soon. Watching the ball go in and out of shadows all game is just brilliant in their opinion

This isn't an unpopular opinion, most people in Victoria would agree the lack of a proper day game is one of the main things that makes Docklands stadium so disliked, but the numbf*cks built the thing facing the wrong way and the sun pours in and blinds people, so unfortunately it is what it is.
Most people want the roof closed, which I understand, it just looks terrible. I think I read they built it that way to fit it on the land they bought.

Helped by the cricket being half decent but have enjoyed the AFL having a bit of time out of media focus. Love the game but getting a breather from the wall to wall coverage which now seems like the best part of 10 months has definitely got a bit much, particularly when at times theres nothing of substance to cover.
I don’t think this is an unpopular view. I’d rather watch some decent cricket or tennis over summer instead of things like the drawn out draft nights.

Is watching 10 guys all just trying to soccer or tap the ball forward and all inevitably chasing after it while doing so really a better spectacle?
I know I am going back to the bow and arrow days when I first stated playing (they had the diamond then instead of the square BTW), there was a rule called dropping the ball.

Basically, if you didn't kick or handball the ball once tackled /caught, you were automatically pinged. There was no prior opportunity - you got the ball, you had to dispose of it legally (by hand or foot) otherwise you were gone.

Whether or not a similar rule these days would help, who knows? Would mean that prior opportunity would be no more.

That the 2024 season by Hawthorn was a flash in the pan. that they aren't that good and in 2025 will get a reality check and miss the 8.

Of course. Anything could happen in 2025.

However, statistically we were in a premiership window come seasons end. Alongside only Brisbane and the Bulldogs.

And the list is in an enviable position from an age demo perspective.

I wouldn't say missing finals in 2025 would be a 'reality check'. It might just be a momentary blip from what is still a relatively young side. This happens quite often.

The biggest surprise would be backing up a poor 2025 with a poor 2026.

Thoughts on having Gaelic football like rules where you have like soccer goals and a designated goalkeeper and if you get it passed goalkeeper and into soccer goals it results in like 9 points or whatever seems appropriate

Having a young team is over rated
Flags are won by mature lists

Having a young team is only relevant if you aren't any good.

Our flag sides have got progressively older and more experienced over the years. No one really focuses on it when you are winning. As soon as we turned to shit in 2021 we became "WC have no yoof".

2018: 26 average age, 2657 total games
2006: 25, 2652
1994: 25, 2096 (21 players)
1992: 24, 1594 (20 players)

North have proven that getting younger doesn't make you better. Getting rid of Harvey, Petrie, Dal Santo etc. without a plan was list management suicide. Our list profile still sucks but I am glad we haven't just chopped everyone over 30 in one hit and hoped that adding 10 players each draft would turn into success.

All draws should go to extra time

If the ball hits the post and goes through, it's a goal

If an umpire has blown his whistle he can't call advantage, he needs to wave advantage without the whistle otherwise play stops.

I truly believe Richmond have totally stuffed their side for at least 10 years with their strategy like Melbourne and Carlton in the early 2000s.

I think they've made the right call to rip the band aid off. Their last flag was 2020 and 9 of that side have retired due to age, plus Castagna called it quits a few years ago. Lynch and Prestia are 32, Broad is 31, Nank and Vlasutin are 30. That team was going nowhere. Hawthorn were also going nowhere and made the right call to move on from O'Meara and Mitchell and ended up with Meek who has been important for them. They were dogshit the first month of the season then ended up a kick away from a prelim in their second season without their 1 and 2 clearance players. Ideally if you are Richmond you keep Bolton (26) and Rioli (27) but they got 3 first round picks and an early second round pick for those two. And they had a sucker in WC willing to overpay for Baker. They still have some senior players left to be part of the rebuild so it's not like their midfield and key posts will all be 10 gamers.

I'm happy we traded Barrass and got reasonable value but outside Reid, Allen and now Waterman we don't really have a list of players that would net us anything so it doesn't make sense for us to offload established players in one hit.

Teams also need to be cognisant of Tassie coming in. Our strategy of bringing in a couple of young players each year may not be everyone's cup of tea but at least we aren't waiting until the 2026/27 drafts to do it. By the time Tassie are getting a list together we should have a list of players from the 2022-2025 drafts with 1-4 years experience.

Are you talking about the loss of Baker, Rioli, Graham and Bolton?

Because these guys were either contracted, or had a contract on the table.

They chose to leave. It wasn't a strategy.
