dunno about the plague per se, but it was certainly the mask apothecary's wore in Renaissance Italy
After a quick bit of reading, they were definitely worn for the plague too. Interesting reading.

familiar to anyone who's enjoyed the Assassins Creed series...

That's why I wanted one

Isn't that one of the masks the doctors wore when people had the plague?

I've translated most of the writing on the beak and it basically says that they were used during the plague and filled with herbs and other stuff to try and protect the wearer from getting infected. Can't remember if it was on the mask or somewhere else but I'm sure I've read that the masks were that long so that the doctor could always stay a certain distance from the patient

Yeah, in the reading I just did that was the reason given. They also used a wooden cane so they didn't have to touch the patient, and a thick gown covered in wax.

Pretty crazy stuff.

In keeping with the darkish theme of the humour, a mate recently bought me back from China a deck of bin Laden themed playing cards. Images include Osama holding numerous AK 47's and Kalashynikovs (sp?) as well as some tasteful cutaways of a certain New York skyline ten or so years ago.
In very poor taste, of course, but a nice example of early 21st century folk art.

In my bookcase, we have a big old family bible which dates back to ~1860. Family trees are in the back, and are updated as necessary. Really cool old book, even though I'm not religeous
