yeah we only got the first 2 hours on a ODI, and the afternoon session of the cricket

it was a very big deal when the ODI's got shown in full. started happening regularly after adelaide oval got the lights up

also, who remembers the awful adelaide oval retractable lights?

Gates open for the last session, free access to a test match.

they did that for amazing adelaide (06/07 series for those not familiar). standing on the hill after work in a suit and tie along with thousands of other office workers in the city was amazing

We played One Day cricket so it was 10 overs, max of 4, min of 3 overs of fast/medium/spin. So usually 4 fast, 3 medium, 3 spin.

10 wickets was out. A pure slog fest.

Sounds like a T20 origin story.

Looking back, Im surprised T20 took so long to actually start.

in the mid 90s mates and I devised a new form of street cricket. 4 a side, each player bowls 5 overs each. Wait, thats t20! Rules drawn up to adapt for roofs, trees, and maximum runs permitted when ball goes into a shrub.

I reckon there's a market for televised backyard / gully cricket with changing rules, one hand one bounce, out if you hit it into Mum's roses, beers at mid-off, sledging encouraged.

I'd watch that before IPL.

If it was a celebrity backyard cricket game, it would definitely rate.

They used to televise a beach cricket series featuring ex-international ciricketers back in 2007, 2008 and 2009, from memory it was on Ch10

The 80s. Back when Richard Hadlee, Martin Crowe and 9 of their friends used to beat Australia.

Until they came up against Mike Whitney and Aussie umpires...

Love videos like that.

"What happened to the beach cricket?"

Here's a 2 minute video that doesn't explain anything!

I've always thought it was Dav Whatmore with the Sri Lankan side of the mid 90s that planted the seeds of T20, their top order was cutting lose during the first 15 overs in a way never seen before in ODIs and only a few years down the track T20 comes along. I'd argue the two aren't unrelated.
I reckon Srikkanth from India was having a slog in the early overs going back to the late 80s/early 90s - admittedly most of his team mates at that time didn't really play the same way.

No they don't really explain why Ch10 stopped televising the beach cricket but they started televising the Big Bash T20 cricket shortly after that which is probably one reason the beach cricket fell by the wayside.

It seems weird to say this, but back in the 80s I hated Hadlee, but after a watching a few youtube videos, and a bit of retrospect, I'm a big fan.

Their side in 87 was very good with Hadlee Crowe (my favourite ever non Australian batsman), John Wright, Smuthy, Andrew Jones etc.

That Greatbstch innings in Perth in 89/90 where he saved the Test was so bloody annoying at the time.

The kiwis in the 90s seemed to have some cult-figure types with Blair Pocock and Dipak Patel.

Mark Greatbatch played an early T20 style opening role for NZ in the 1992 World Cup which was quite successful getting them to the semis.

I had an uncle with a crazy affinity with that team. We have some Maori heritage generations ago, but we never learned anything about it or celebrated it. He just really loved that team - he collected bats and signed jerseys before they were a thing, the bat he used was a Martin Crowe bat, he had all sorts of random memorabilia.

Bastard promised me that bat until he accidentally had boys of his own

(The bat was nearly 25 years old when I was supposed to be getting it, it was over 30 years old by the time his son used it!)

Also, add Chris Harris with the worst bowling action to ever see international cricket to the list of cult heroes!
