What year did you first watch footy?

as a toddler there are photos of me in pies gear thanks to my cousin, but when i was about 5 we were living in ballarat and alot of the kids in my class were Cats fans, i guess its a 'country' connection. i remember watching micky turner and gazza and decided they were the team for me. that was about 86. first game i can remember vividly though is the 89GF. for some reason after the match i could have swore we lost by 1 point instead of 1 goal.

whilst it was devastating at the time when we lost in 89,92,94,95 and of course 2008, how bloody lucky are we to have been up and about since the inception of the AFL. i think we are equal on premierships with eagles and hawks, and i think we have the most wins and most finals appearances. so we can't complain too much, we have seen our boys win a lot of games.

I would have been about 4 or 5 when dad started blatantly making me become a cats fan (I can thank him to this day).

So circa 1994/1995. Can't remember much of it back then, that's for sure.

That mark against St Kilda is astounding - standing on the defenders shoulder , think it's on the wall in the Club

Who is the centreman you speak of you pick one ? Not Dennis M , from the famous Polinelli , Marshall , Closter centreline?
Alistair Lord.

This one,and Peter Walker coming out of the back line.

Round 1, 1984 vs Fitzroy was the first game I remember watching. Just so happened to be Ablett senior's first Geelong game too.

Round 1 1994 against Melbourne, that's the first game I can remember, and the first whole season of footy I can remember.

I can remember that game too. I've got a feeling Bryan Sheehan was wearing a cap that day to protect his balding bonce.

It was an interesting game, I was sitting in the top deck of the MCG, could barely see and we lost by 10 goals. Not a great start, but since then we've been the most successful side, so I'm pretty happy.

1999 or 2000 against the Bulldogs at Kardinia Park. We were pipped by a kick after leading by 3-4 goals with 15 mins to play.

Not exactly the best introduction to footy for me, but living in Geelong and with the whole family being Cats supporters (other than mum) I didn't exactly have much choice as to who I could barrack for. Guess it paid off eventually. :)

Just checked the stats from that game before. Allen Jakovich had a day out, kicking 8.8 from full forward, yet still couldn't get a Brownlow vote.

76. And live. There was obviously no footy on TV then

mine is fair dinkum unlike betchsta back on page 1
I first saw geelong play, known as the pivotonians back then, in 1949 I thought we'd played collingwood that day at K. Park, but it was Footscray.
From all those seasons ago, my sister dug out the old Footy Record, very brown and musty now, from boxes in her garage
You'd check the numbers on the scoreboard to get quarter by quarter results from other grounds [A (which was Collingwood: 4.5, B which stood for Fitzroy: 4.7 etc... and other numbers for race results. Everything was posted on the old scoreboards in those days
Was also at the G as a primary schoolboy in 1951 to see the Mighty Hoops beat Essendon in the grannie. Dicky Reynolds, supposedly non-playing coach that day, ran onto the ground as the 20th man final quarter.
Didn't matter, We still beat 'em and George Goninon won the VFL goal kicking Coleman had been suspended for the finals series that year

Maybe your memory is clouded.

Under 19's, reserves, seniors were all in the GF at the MCG that day.

U/19 lost by 1
Reserves by 3
Seniors by 6

It was like taking an arrow to the heart every few hours :(

How lucky are some people that never went through the bad years 1980 to 1995 so close in so many finals night and day.thought we would never win a flag i got rotten drunk over our night flag in 2006
Yeah seeing us break all those records, thrilling finals victories and getting to watch the greatest player ever play the game for our side was such a drag. Would of much rather watched those years where we were an ordinary side that did nothing between 1998-2003.

So why did you jump ship to the Tigers old codger? part of a prenuptial or some thing:),you can't be the every day garden variety band wagoner or you be back on the mighty Cats or more likely even a Hawk.

1974, Round 22 - Junction Oval. At four years of age, was taken by neighbours to see what this caper was all about (Mum had no interest in footy), Cats had a win from behind thanks to some Sammy Newman magic, and a love-affair was born. Sure we've had our ups and downs, some estrangement and ugly spats, but the love has held, the longest of my life, for what will be our 40th Anniversary this year. :hearts:

Very true whit3y we did play a great brand of footy under blighty.when you think about we are very lucky to watch this club play footy. we entertain better than any other club we get our money worth watching this great club
We have, and hopefully always will, play the game as it should be played.

I know that sounds cheesey, but it's true.

I think the first game I attended was in 1967, but I clearly recall going to home games on a regular basis with the old man in 1968. Funnily enough my memories of these games was not about Goggin, Wade, Ryan, Rosenow, Closter, Polinelli, Newman etc, but stupid things like the Scottish Highland band that played at half time, buying potato chips just to get the freebie (a plastic Cats lapel pin), and, because we always stood beside the Geelong race, smelling the liniment as players ran onto the field.

My first "away" game, sadly, was the 1st Semi in 1969 when Richmond pummeled Geelong.

'84 or '85.

I went to a few Hawthorn games with my Mum in 1984, who was the Hawks fan (I never barracked for the Hawks, fear not!), but I eventually got to see the Cats at Kardinia, I think it was in 1985 - they played Melbourne, it was a miserable day but some bloke wearing #5 for Geelong kicked a bag in the slippery wet conditions, making it all look pretty easy, and the Cats romped it in. At least one Melbourne player went off on a stretcher, I remember my Demons-supporting step-dad was incensed at the time, much to my amusement.

Yep. Ablett had an absolute shocker and was well held by Sean Wight (he kicked 2 from memory).

However, he remembered it very well, because in the return match he tore Wight to pieces and kicked 10.

Don't forget how much fun it was to see 4 losing day Grand Finals plus 3 losing night Grand Finals (1988, 1989, 1997) in that period too. Barrel of laughs all around.
