Unfortunately that version doesn't really add up considering at the time we had one of the best psychologists, Jacqui Lauder, at the club who is well known to help our player's struggling with mental health.


Also why would the club not help a player that they have 2 million dollars (and rumoured more) invested in? Surely it's in the club's interest to do to all they can help him get right?

Unless his behaviour was so toxic, particularly to younger players, that the club couldn't have him back. Beams himself admitted earlier this year that he would lie and manipulate others to get prescription drugs.

Everyone hasn't made up their minds, it's just that nobody seems to provide evidence refuting the general allegations that the club welcomed him back and paid his gambling debts. Then he manipulated younger players to lie to get Endone for him, a couple of which ended up getting hooked themselves. Take your post for example. Why didn't the club support him? There has to be a reason.

Many years ago when I walked with a spring and could see my nether regions I sat in Bay 13 to watch the windies play australia in a one day game. Mollie Meldrum walked down and someone started a chant that ended up having everyone stand up and finger point at Meldrum chanting Mollies a ****ter. A few minutes later some police escorted Mollie safely out of Bay 13. It seemed funny at the time but on reflection horrible and no doubt Mollie felt threatened and abused.
The funny thing is I suspect the majority of the very drunk bay 13 (full strength back then) grew up to Mollie, loved him then and still do now. I remember a crowd chant at the MCG of tazza's a sniffer during a Freo Pies final but we welcomed him back with open arms. Whilst there are always exceptions I don't think in general the crowd treatment in these cases was heartfelt. I am not excusing it but I do think its carried away mob mentality and a joke rather than true antagonism. If a player came out next year and the media dealt with it well I can see them being cheered by the majority just as easily as being derided.

It would be tough whether the media was supportive or not (although, these days, the media is usually very supportive as often players have struggled with their sexualities). Schools and work places are bad enough, let alone in sport. That's why I almost think two players might come out as a couple or together as it would mean both received less scrutiny and could support each other. I hope that in the next decade one player feels like they are safe enough to come out. Because it's not about us, it's about what it does for them. Coming out publicly means they feel comfortable enough to be open and they will be supported and accepted for who they are. There is obviously at least one gay or bisexual player (population statistics would indicate more) but at the moment, those players probably aren't comfortable or ready to be out in public.

I thought what better way to give back than choose a charity organisation that I can strongly relate with and donate a percentage of each art piece sale"

i have no clue, i only know that he had a problem and the club didnt help him, could be any reason, but he went to rehab and now admitted his problems so he could have been redeemed? And we could have got a couple more years on the field? Did the club try hard enough? Did the leadership at the time have no tolerence? Did the other players get hooked because of Dayne? Given the drug culture of the generation i dont think you can fully blame one person.
I just hate the full on pile on, yes he made mistakes but he has also taken steps to make himself a better person and thats all he can do.

Sounds like the club already gave him redemption when they brought him back from Brisbane. There is no way the club would cast him out if his behaviour wasn't directly affecting other players. I can see how they might work with him if he had only damaged himself but you can't expect a multi million dollar elite sporting club to put other employees at risk again just because he says that he's all better now.

You are just assuming. You dont know and either do I, but i do know he is trying to make amends just like Gavin Crosisca did.

Statistically, out of 400 players, there’d be around 10 who identified as gay.

However, I’m sure it’s less, given the non-inclusive nature of elite sport. Many gay potential athletes were likely pushed out of the system quite early.

I’d love for a few boys to band together and ‘rip the bandaid off’. Then there’d be no one person referred to forever as “AFL’s first openly gay player” and those young boys feeling alienated in the juniors might feel empowered enough to stick with it.
