Got a new DVD yesterday, The Magician (2005/I), absolutely loved it.

Quirky, rough cut with no polish about a filmmaker following a hitman.

An Aussie rough diamond, buy this DVD

When I think about Bedford Falls I think about the book Better Than Life.

Never watched the whole move It's a Wonderful Life. The dude wishes he was never born and gets to see the world without him.

I tried to watch it on tv a few years back and gave up. Too long lol

Predators... I really liked this, but no one else who was watching it with me did. Had an interesting premise, a good cast and some decent action. Surely the best Predators movie since the original.

Vampires Suck... these things usually aren't my cup of tea, but the chick in the lead role did a great impression of Kristen whatsherface and that kept me laughing.

We Need To Talk About Kevin - geez what a movie. Immediately shoots up near the top of my 2011 list. Every parents worst nightmare, expertly acted and wonderfully shot. Similar to Drive, I think the soundtrack really helped in putting this movie up another level. I really like Tilda Swinton. A very good character actress imo.

Love & Other Drugs... mildly moving douchebag-gets-the-girl type movie. Worth watching to see Anne Hathaway's boobs. Also resembles a Pfizer ad in the same way that Castaway resembled a FedEx ad.

Underrated, little known Aussie gem. Bit reminiscent of Man bites Dog, with a particularly Aussie slant :thumbsu::thumbsu:

The Skin I Live In - Brilliant film. Part horror, part drama, part macabre, part sad. Banderas is great, Anaya is great. Strange film, but a very rewarding one. Again, another movie with a perfect sound track. One of the best of the year.

Yep. Impressive stuff. Draining though.

Amazing book too.

Finally got around to watching Pan's Labyrinth last night, picked it up in a blu ray post christmas sale. Visually spectacular, a fantastically told adult gothic fairytale. Get over your subtitle fears and watch this movie :D

The wife and I thought we'd head out to the movies yesterday and settled on MI4, largely as Sherlock isnt out till next week here. It was reasonably entertaining. I don't care much for Tom Cruise as an actor, however I'm prepared to watch a movie in spite of him if its any good...which for this is debatable. I can't comment on MI3 as I never saw it but MI2 was a pile of slow motion rubbish, at least this was an improvement over what went before. My main gripe with it was probably length, it was decent through the Russia and Dubai sequences, however the final third seemed totally unnecessary and over the top, although worth it to get Paula in that dress.:thumbsu:

In particular, the final fight was just absurd imo. But, overall, yeah it was a reasonably entertaining couple of hours, and it would have been a better film if it was 15-20 mins shorter. i keep swapping between 6 and 6.5/10

Watched this yesterday, brilliant and quite disturbing.

The Last Winter - A thriller/drama from 2007 about a group of environmentalists seeking oil in Alaska. Man this was bad. Just soooooo boring. I love movies that build tension, suspense, add to the drama and I dont mind if its a touch slow in doing so, as long as you can see the end of its means. But this was just plain boring with a ridiculously bad 'twist' and equally bad cgi. The acting was alright, the camera work sound, but the script, the plot, everything about the actual story was just, plain, shit. Not sure how it got so many decent reviews (75% RT, 69% Metacritic).

The last time i went to the cinema was to see Legends of The Fall with a group of people in late '94 or early '95. :D I was so bored and frustrated (and uncomfortable with the people I was with thinking it was the best thing they'd ever seen -- especially the girls) at not being able to fast-forward all the pedestrian and scmaltzy bits, that I swore never to go again, and I haven't.

Anyway, yeah nah, I watched a bit of Falling Down last night. I haven't it for ages. I also watched the last 30min of Field of Dreams the other day, which is another one I ain't seen for years. All the new channels are grouse!! :p And ch90 show some cool old flicks on weekend arvos

Anvil Watched this doco on the teeve last night. Nice antidote to the Metallica doco, really likeable bunch and found myself rooting for them. The fact that the drummer was called Robb Reiner gave me a chuckle.

Troll Hunter Norwegian mockumentary. Thought it was an absolute hoot!

All About My Mother (1999) - My second Almodovar movie in the last couple of months. So far my impression of his films are that they are really effective in their storytelling and unique, which provide both compelling moments and light entertainment almost concurrently.
Like Talk to Her it feature a superb performance by the lead and fantastic performances by all involved. I really enjoy the interaction between the complex characters brought together by events and how the story unfolds is tragic yet uplifting at the end. It's also good seeing a female orientated film which I don't really see a lot of. It's witty and touching! 8/10

The re-education of Macca continues with part 4 - the Hitchcock classic Psycho. I dont know whether I went in with too high expectations at seeing the grand daddy of horror, but I was left a bit underwhelmed. Was intriguing, well acted, cool story but there was something about it that just didnt gel like the other 3 classics ive seen have.

Went to the cinemas yesterday to beat the Melbourne heat and watched two films

Tower Heist- Was actually doing an admirable job of being funny and finally letting Stiller and co do a comedy where they could swear again, and then the "heist" part started, I won't give anything away but they jumped the mother of all sharks and the whole thing descended into a farce. Two things to note. 1- Not sure anyone has been as type cast as Broderick, always a pathetic middle aged loser, 2-Kate Upton has 4 seconds of screen time, no lines, but you will remember her, the hottest woman of last year. 4/10 for the first half laughs

New Years Day- its good to watch a movie this bad occasionally to really appreciate good cinema, nothing worth writing about, the Efron/Pfeieffer story is admirable and I wouldn't be surprised if Lea Michelle and Ashton Kutcher are having it off. Anyway this was garbage and I truly despise Katherine Heigl, 1/10 for Efron getting to fulfill my dream of kissing Pfeiffer albeit way too long after my catwoman fantasy.

Hable con Ella, talk to her, was my favourite film for quite a while, blew my mind.

as usual 100% melodrama and generous sexual and identity politics.

Thought the casting of Antonio Banderas was brilliant, as he seems to be sharing the same cosmetic and youth doctor his wife Melanie Girffith is seeing, she of the next iteration of Joan Rivers. Compare Bandaras browline and forehead, the thickening of the bones, tne the lengthening of the forehead, even whejn you neutralise it for visual illusion because rescinding hairline. If u doubt me, ask a cosmetic doc, or Victor Conte, or Jonathan Vaughters, and ask a Manhattan high fashion photog who photographs male models for campaigns with naturally big heads, and ask them do they discern the changes, especially the thickening of the brow and a developing simian brow.

Brilliant, brilliant, meta casting to get Banderas and his fountain of youth exogenous hormones in that role.

Was really struggling to deal with the similarities in the chick from Sex & Lucia and the other one in Talk to Her, and needed to go to IMDB to check their filmographies because I knew the main actress in the role was the Sex & Lucia one, but then the daughter in the parallel non linear naarative was introduced with same haircut and same make-up, it was very difficult to discern the visage alteration/change actress in those roles/character. You find that too?

gonna have to see this, saw the first act after the melb launch of Decadence, and was still trying to get my head around it, and felling chuffed to be speaking to Pria and the producer(s), so was not in the right headspace for another movie. (edit: or feeling chuffed)

Sounded my type of film, and loved the pallet and screen daubed with red. Good to see a recommendation not a write up from a critic.

Scott Ryan very influenced by Quentin methinks. Thinking specifically the thread with burgers on a park bench and the price to engage in scatological epicure amongst other scenes. Great tracksuit, made me think the Swingers bowling shirt wardrobe

Saw launch at Nova. He had enuff footage after showing this at St Kilda Shorts Fest, which I did not see, Nash Edgerton cam and spoke to him, and produced it, when they recut it. (I think). I dont think he went out and refilmed it. Was on digital. And basically funded from his Centrelink cheque. Was at RMIT Communications and Media Studies 2nd or 3rd year at that moment. Think Leigh Whannel and Tan were going thru about that time, and Megan Spencer did earlier, she may have even gone on to lecture. Now Vince Giarusso or Mallboy and Underground Lovers (ex VCA grad) is teaching a ferw units there
