Unbroken - very average I thought. Slow to begin with but gradually picked up in the second half only to plateau for the last 40 minutes on scenes that had already been done. Found myself dozing off and not really knowing who was who and also not caring too much either whilst waiting for the cavalry to arrive. 5/10

For anyone who's interested I think this is a much better and also quite recent film based on the same subject matter - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2058107/?ref_=nv_sr_1

On The Beach (1959)

American film set in Melbourne after nuclear war has caused the northern hemisphere to become uninhabitable. I liked it, one could say it is a little boring, but it is refreshing to see a doomsday movie that is less about chaos and zombies and more about people's meditation on life, their feelings and how they interact. Lots of interesting shots of Melbourne in the fifties provides for some particular enjoyment.

Pretty well acted, I think Anthony Perkins is about the only one that really got close to nailing the aussie accent, I probably liked Fred Astair's character the best. A favoutie scene was
quite subtle. After several occasions of fixing the painting in the club, I liked how near the end the lone worker just let it be and helped himself to a drink and a bit of snooker. Three things he could never do before, it was this small act of selfish yet restrained and inconsequentially harmless rebellion that I found quite beautiful.

Would have been interesting to watch back in the day, when the threat of all out nuclear war was a fear in the forefront of our minds.

American Beauty (1999)

Yes, in all these years I had never seen it. Can see why it cleaned up with all those awards back in the day. I'm not entirely sure
why that Marine guy kisses Kevin Spacey before killing him though??? Was he a closeted homosexual all along? Or was he trying to relate to his son and accept that his son was gay?

9/10

definitely closeted but I also always thought/assumed because he was jealous of their connection which he never managed to achieve in any meaningful way, quite the opposite having to play the cop

agree. Also note his wife in the movie, without spelling it out, she does come accross as someone not getting a lot of lovin

It really is one of my faves. You either get it or you dont, some people think the plastic bag scene is stupid, others understand that is basically what the whole movie is about. It'stagline LOOK CLOSER could not be more apt.

ManWithNoName anything in particular you got kut of the second viewing of Birdman? I think I posted earlier I needed another look to be sure how I felt ablut it, would be interesting what repeat viewing deliver.
Liked it just as much. Though I loved it the first time. There were more just little things I picked up on I guess. I was more aware to watch everything happening on the screen as much as I could, rather than just focusing on one character.

Also to watch Edward Norton at any possible second.
