^ One of the best films i've seen :thumbsu:

The Legend of 1900 (1998) - Good film a bit too long but effective nonetheless. Tornatore can obviously direct a film. I've seen Cinema Paradiso and Malena before this so I was expecting a good film and it delivered. The musical score by Morricone is just sublime. Up there with the best piano themed movies i've seen. 8/10

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) -Sam Peckinpah and Warren Oates what a great combo! Compelling and dark. 8.5/10

Argo - Pretty effective film. Had some really tense moments with an exemplary start and finish. There was a little flat spot in the middle but otherwise a fine effort from Affleck. The major acting kudos must go to Bryan Cranston and Skoot McNairy (the guy learned Farsi!). Really hard to believe that Affleck and Bigelow aren't nominated for two of the best directed films. The Oscars really are a joke these days. 8/10

Argo - I really enjoyed it and thought it was very entertaining and tense. I'd give it 8/10.

Pitch Perfect - It's not the type of film I would usually like but I found myself entertained and there were several funny moments. I'd say 7/10.

Lincoln

Had to catch it before the Oscars (les mis now the only one I haven't seen of the Best Pic) and it went pretty much as expected. Interest waned up and down during it. DDL is Lincoln. Sally Field and Tommy Lee are excellent. Surprised by some of the names that kept coming up. I think I'd be more impressed if it wasn't Spielberg who directed it.

All in all a solid 8/10

Journey to the west: Conquering the Demons:

Based on the fantasy 80's kids show Monkey, and from the brainchild of Stephen Chow (the brilliant Kung Fu Hustle fame) this movie won't be for everyone. CGI effects were great, the comedy was ****ing hilarious and the story line was solid. My only real criticism was that it could have been cut by about ten minutes in the running time.

Have been on a bit of a Korean movie binge the last few weeks

Memories of Murder - A lot of hype around this one and it delivered. I can't really fault anything about it and like a lot of Korean cinema some of the staging and shots are superb. The lack of resolution at the end might frustrate some people though

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance - Probably the weakest of the vengeance trilogy but it has some great moments.

The Classic/Windstruck/My Sassy Girl - Three rom-coms from the same director and I have to admit that I enjoyed all three of them although Windstruck is a little weak compared to the other two. There is just something about the style and manner of Korean filmmakers that strikes a chord with me and My Sassy Girl is perfect to watch with the missus if you can get a hold of it.

Being the film bum that I am I've covered most of the better Korean films. So let us know if you have some recommendations I might have missed some. I've got Peppermint Candy as the next one i'm going to see.

Had a look at Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring?

Pieta is another recent great Kim Ki Duk offering.

The Thieves is a pretty solid crime caper if that's your thing.

This is/was a fairly handy source that covers a wide range of stuff:

Yep I need to watch that keep seeing bits and piece of it when it's on SBS. 3-Iron was so good so I must watch this.
Don't read any reviews, know as little as possible about the content and just go with it.

I think it's his best work as a director and I've seen all his films.

Zero Dark 30 (2012)
Karthery Bigelow's 2nd war movie. If you enjoyed THE HURT LOCKER (2009) you should enjoy this film. Long long film that lends itself more to a HBO mini series if it went any longer.

To me the film lacked the balance needed to show what other information and leads they the CIA where following up on the hunt for Osma Bin Laden. All we get in this film his how MAYA (Jessica Chastain) is so focused on one lead that she must be right, which in part makes her out to be superwoman or something along those lines. Anyway, good mock up of OBL's last hide out and the battle to take the compound.

Will look forward to other films that could be made about the death of OBL.

Australian's Jason Clarke and Joel Edgerton are very good to excellent in this film.

Worth a look.

Will definitely have to check this one out, love Kung Fu Hustle and Journey to the West has inspired some great media over the years. I grew up with Monkey, and The Forbidden Kingdom with Jet Li and Jackie Chan was an ok movie but add at least 2 stars for Monkey fans :), The PS3 game Enslaved is another nice take on it. Would like to get around to reading the original story (at least a translation) one day.

The Angels' share, set in Scotland and a pretty good little indie film.

Trial de Joan of Arc by Bresson.

My first Bresson film and was pretty darn impressed. Very sparse and tight, minimalist to perfection and the lead actress (who was actually a non-actor) was quite impressive. Definitely need to check out more of Bresson's stuff.
8/10.

Holy Motors:
Yeah, really impressed by this one. Carax plays with convention extremely effectively. I was pushed and pushed by the direction but it always straddled that line between 'I'm enjoying what's going on here' and 'this is getting ridiculous' to perfection, as I never once delved in to the latter. Well shot, wonderful lead acting performance by Lavant (and great cameo by Kylie Minogue), just an all-round great movie experience...cinema needs more of this sort of thing. 8/10

Haven't seen that but recently saw A Man Escaped and Pickpocket a few years back both excellent films by Bresson.

A few there I haven't seen :thumbsu: but these ones are brilliant.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) -A little bit underwhelmed by this. There is no doubt that the duo of Newman and Redford is one of the best i've seen. There chemistry was superb but the direction and screenplay wasn't as dynamic as the performances. The chase scene was very strong I appreciated that a lot. Entertaining if not slightly overrated film. 7/10

What a toss. This will be a common review among people wanting to sound cultured in cinema.

The movie is a sick joke and makes no sense. I nearly fell asleep many times.

Big Money Hustlas

Quite funny but the story line is a bit bland. ICP do well as actors and the supporting cast does a decent enough job. It's about a gang controlling the streets of New York with Big Baby Sweets as the main bad guy (Violent J) and Sugar Bear (Shaggy 2 Dope) the cool cop brought in to take him down The soundtrack is cool if you're an ICP fan and the laughs keep things flowing nicely. I think it was well done for the budget they had and the end scene with Mick Foley was kinda cool. Not sure about the fat t***ies but I guess they don't want to objectify stick figure girls which is fine by me.

5 stars*

Chronicles Of Riddick

I was warned not to expect too much but I thought this was a good movie. It wasn't really explained very well as to how the underverse ties into what happened and building Riddick up as some "Furion warrior" was a little strange and unneeded. Interesting role played by Judi Dench added some spice but overall the acting was quite bland. Great performance by Vin given what he had to work with but it's not as good as Pitch Black that's for sure. The bounty hunters were more entertaining than the necromongers. Still enjoyable and I really hope the next movie in the series blows me away.

4 stars

*Extreme bias.

No one in the world is an ICP fan

Lol. Ahh yes, the classic 'people don't actually like those films, they just want to appear cultured' argument. Much the same as people don't actually like classical music, they just want to appear cultured and various other variations. It couldn't possibly be that someone has a different understanding of film than yourself or anything crazy like that. It's always funny when people like you imply pretension on the part of people like me, when it's you making a judgement on me based on the films I like. Heck, if we want to go the pretentious route then I'll happily back my knowledge and understanding of film against your good self. But then we'd have to turn a good topic far off course.

Anyway, you're full of shit and making yourself sound like a dolt. :)

Searching for Sugar Man

An interesting doco, and I really enjoyed the music. I would have liked to hear some of Rodriguez's thoughts on his own song writing, although he did seem like a pretty humble guy so maybe he didn't want to talk too much about that.

Ultimately I don't think it lived up to the hype surrounding it. Probably didn't help that I'd read a bit about it and knew that
Rodriguez was alive and had also had somewhat of a comeback tour in Aus

Catfish (2010) - Not sure if by coincidence but it was almost simultaneous where I was watching the whole Manti Teo controversy but suddenly I realized there was this show on MTV called Catfish addressing a similar theme. Then I realised this series was based on a feature documentary made by the same guys. Whether real, fake or embellished it's very well made the first half an hour as you can imagine is a bit staggering but the last hour was classic stuff. 8.5/10
