Argo - was good, but I couldn't help feel a little underwhelmed, given the hype. Saw Zero Dark Thirty the week prior and thought that was a far better film, much more interesting. Very much a slow burn, leading to an excellent climax.

Couldnt agree more.

Oscars got it so wrong, but hey whats new about that.

Think I might see ZD30 again, and I hardly ever do that, not since I stopped working at a cinema and got my movies for free!

Saw 'Amour' last night. Was blown away. It's just a beautiful film - exquisitely shot, impeccably acted, wonderfully written. It's sad and uplifting and tragic and funny. Highly recommended.

Amour - Very well directed film. Took a while for me to get into it but once it picked up there were some brilliant moments. Haneke is obviously a guru in creating poignant scenes. The acting was brilliant. A bit annoying that Jean-Louis Trintignant (the male lead) did not get nominated where all the Oscar acclaim seemed to belong to Emmanuelle Riva. I believe he was the best performer in the film
A sad and touching experience that I think will resonate with me for a while. 8/10

I've been looking forward to seeing this. Heard rave reviews on the radio. Can't wait :thumbsu:

Timer (2009) - Bit of a strange concept but was charming all the same. Indie romance not too shabby although the ending was a bit predictable and a letdown. 6.5/10

A City of Sadness (1989) - A Taiwanese masterpiece 9/10

Chronicle

Really enjoyed it, sounds like it was a bit of a lower budget and first film for the director and he really nailed it imo.

Its not without its faults maybe but they've taken two of the most overused ideas in cinema at the moment, superhero movies and shaky/home movie cam (thankfully very light on the shaky) and managed to find a story worth telling, that puts it well above a lot of other movies made at the same time that had 10 times the resources plowed into them.

And its 85 minutes yay! I love hour and a half movies, There are some fantastic movies that go for 3 hours+, sometimes a story is worth the extra time but it's not half as often as movie makers seem to think.

The Beaver.

Not a Mel Gibson fan which is more to do with his far right, anti semitic, anti gay stances etc.... but I thought I would give this a try when it was on Fox.

I thought he was quite brilliant in this movie. Excellent performances all round from Gibson, Jodie Foser (who directed it) and Jennifer Lawrence.

It is a very strange concept of a man who is so down that he tries to commit suicide only to be dragged back into a worthwhile existence by living through a hand puppet that he found in a bin, but I think it worked very well. You just have to get past Gibson being a tool.

Oz the Great and Powerful - ok movie but certainly not something to rave about. Franco was just ok, Michelle Williams I am continuing to be impressed by - lowlights were Mila Kunis being kinda dissappointing (still good eye candy) and Rachel Weisz was likewise. Tough gig to venture into Oz territory given the original is so well loved, but it sorta misses the mark (without upsetting the vibe of the original).

6/10

Near Dark (1987) - So I first heard about this because it was one of Margaret's classic films and decided to give it a watch being a Bigelow film and all. Pretty underwhelming. Not sure if it's aged well or not but it felt a bit Terminator lite or something. 6/10 Had some impressive gory scenes i'll give it that!

Watched this recently too I would rate it about a 7/10 a little different to most vampire flicks as the vampires were pretty much a ruthless bunch different to the usual vampires that are served up and that blonde chick was cute thought the vampire family did a good job of acting as well

anyone seen save your legs?

i noted with interest SEN gave it a bit of publicity. But Leigh Pasch said it was not funny. something about steven curry to me screams not funny.

anyway

John Landis directed Coming to America

Director of hit movies such as the blues brothers and animal house, Landis brings us a comedy of the ages. The versatility of murphy and hall shone through as the fleshed out each character brilliantly. From the african princes, to the barbers, to randy watson and a trans girl in the bar.

Costumes of the fictional country of Zamunda were pretty good for its time.

What is construed as a comedy also has elements of drama and good family viewing (except for some vulgarities). A nice, positive message in the final scenes gladdened heart will provide young kids/teens with a simple yet effective message that although people say love conquers all boundaries including lack of money, having money helps!

cameos from cuby gooding jr, and samuel L jackson (who is now famous for advertising sportsbet).

Out of 10 I give it a solid 7.5 for one of my all time favourites.

The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009) was on last night. Wow that falls into the category of "it's so bad it's mildly entertaining". A lot of ridiculous moments. But I got a laugh out of it especially out of manic Travolta. 5/10

Watched Oz: The great and powerful last night. i really hate James Franco for some reason, but the flick was good overall, Kunis is seriously hot and Michelle Williams is absolutely beautiful, i would marry that woman. More than all of this was the totally f**ked up cinema experience, this time we had a large family who kept clapping during the film (its a movie not a stage show idiots) then three separate people had their phones ring... One old lady had it ring twice!!! then the projectionist turned the light in the projection room on and light up half the cinema, WTF is the world coming to... Anyway 7.5/10 for the film, 0 for the ambiance of the cinema (and i love the sun in Yarraville normally)

Cinema etiquette is generally appalling. Most people think they're being polite by switching their phones to 'silent' but then proceed to text anyway.

I noticed in the US they've had to change most of the pre-movie warnings from 'switch your phone off' to 'no texting during the movie' or similar. Sad that people can't sit through a two hour film without needing to text somebody.

Having said that, I like watching movies in the cinema if the crowd gets into it. Watching Amour the other day there were several gasps at certain points, which I don't mind because to me it shows people are engaged with the film and is part of the atmosphere. Same with comedies, makes it much better if the whole cinema is cracking up.

Just turn your damn phone off.

Blood Diamonds, with leo dicaprio- watched it again and it just gets better!!

Have enjoyed most of leo's movies except Inception, did my head in

.

I went to see I Give it a Year the other day, in the middle of the day (mainly saw it to get out of the heat and there was nothing much else on)... 2.30 session.. 2.40 came.. still only one in there.. 2.45.... movie began, had the whole cinema to myself. (2nd time in my life that has happened).

Is absolutely awesome- no rustling of papers, no chewing, no talking obviously (unless i wanna talk :D), no mobiles.

Its just fantastic. Wish it would happen more often, haha.

As for the movie, I didnt mind it. Had some really funny spots, but it was nothing special. The ending was a bit weird, but overall ok.

dont understand why ppl feel the need to text during movies. i always get these dykheads sitting near me.

in one cinema i frequent ushers/staff come in one or 2x during the movie to check for any ruffians. wish they'd kick people out for using their phones.

This is my list of annoyances:
- talking (and yes that includes whispering constantly. WE CAN STILL HEAR YOU)
- mobile phone ringing
- people taking calls in a cinema
- people texting, especially when the "beeping" keypad noise is on
- people (kids im looking in your direction) walking up and down way too many times- and also changing seats. Choose a ****ing seat and sit in it or GTFO
- people rustling chip packets loudly. (this is the only "food" one that annoys me- other general eating popcorn, etc doesnt, in fact i kinda associate this noise with being in a cinema, lol)
- people (kids again mainly) taking photos of themselves. Yes this does happen, its rare but it does.
- people sitting near me; in front is the worst, but i also get kinda annoyed if people sit right behind me too. I like my space. Dont even get me started on ppl who take seats RIGHT next to me- esp if there are other options to sit somewhere else in the cinema.

Is that the complete list? Anymore people got?
