Watched Solo again this week and it isn't a terrible movie, but one thing I don't get is if this film is set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope (because The Empire is a thing) then how can Darth Maul be alive?

Stupid fan service from The Clone Wars animated show.

I like Clone Wars, but no way it should have made its way to film.

A serious overcorrection from complete lack of fan service from TLJ.

So does he have robot legs now, in clone wars, since he was cut in half?

Searching.

High concept keeps you engaged but doesn't leave a lasting impression.

Hmmm. It was okay. I didn't particularly care for the production style, (it's basically POV of the main character looking at and operating a computer screen most of the time), in fact it kind of infuriated me for the first 20 minutes or so and I almost walked out. Is this what the world is coming to, are people that addicted to being online that even a movie needs to be dished up as if the viewer is at a computer?

Anyway, clearly they've decided to go with this format. You could call it a gimmick, or you could call it challenging themselves. The Tom Hardy movie Locke tried something similar (an entire movie of a man driving a car and on the phone) and we engaging enough. Searching succeeds in their experiment in that after a while the schtick becomes less jarring and you can settle in to enjoying the film. Unless of course you like things like good cinematography, as this movie sacrifices that completely. (Even the live action scenes are deliberately filmed to look shit). Guess it was edited well at least. (If there was anything to edit?)

As for the plot, it's an engaging mystery with layers of twists and reveals which are kind of good, although I pretty much saw it all coming. (I'm not normally the type that does)

The sound and editing are good. Acting is okay, but the format doesn't really allow this aspect of the movie to flourish.

All up, it tried something different, and it could have been really shit because of that, but it wasn't.

2.5 stars.

The Predator - firstly I think comparing the original to T2 and Alien is just insanity. It was a big dumb horror/comedy/action film that’s a cut above most other 80s action films but nothing more. It’s super fun but T2 and Alien are iconic sci-Fi horror and high concept sci-fi. Anyway this is fun, it’s violent, it’s bonkers. I think it actually honors the original and hits some new notes. I agree it’s not a shade on the original (mostly cause Boyd Holbrook good as he is isn’t Dutch). Sterling K.Brown is great and everyone else does their bit. Take it for what it is and don’t revionist history the original and you’ll enjoy it. 7.5/10

Still haven't been able to watch Kingsman 2 again, despite getting it soon as it was released. Have probably watched part one three times again since part two.

You mean you actually managed to get through the entire thing once, must say that's quite an achievement, I bailed around the time they were feeding someone into a giant blender, not really sure how I managed to get that far to be honest.

How so, the first was a classic of the genre while this is just a bad comedy masquerading as a horror/action film, personally think it does a disservice to the original, even as a standalone film it pretty much stinks on all levels IMO.

That was me, and I wasn't comparing it to T2 and Alien, but T1 and Aliens.

...

Well I knew from the preview there would be a hot chick in not much, so I hung around for that, and after that I was like 'may as well hang around for Elton John'

It wasn’t a classic of any genre, it was a big dumb action/sci fi, which is what this is. Granted this is more slapstick and over the top but it’s running in the same circle.

More to the era. Alien isn't really even the genre.

I don't know. Have you watched it recently? The way it creates tension and atmosphere, and makes us care about some big dumb action movie stereotypes, is top notch, and there's nearly no humour at all after the first section.

It's a serious movie, and it's seriously entertaining.

I can't agree at all with that first comment. Predator is a true classic of the action/sci-fi genre that has stood the test of time. Brilliant film.

The Meg (2018)

The movie rumbles along with a few fun action sequences, very little originality, and Stratham does a decent job as the action hero even if his Chinese love interest has no chemistry with him whatsoever. The movie is cheesy popcorn fun, but just doesn't really reach the heights it promises. The CGI is hit and miss, but passable. 5/10

Fair. FWIW I love predator for what it is and was.

I’ve also never really understood the idea of a remake or sequel destroying a legacy. Especially 30 years after the fact. If seeing this one makes someone want to watch the original one great, if they hate this they were never gonna watch the original anyway.

Except Aliens was better than Alien. As for Predator, I think it's a classic '80s action film without being a classic, if that makes sense. I just don't see it as a franchise, it was a one and done story, whereas something like Terminator has a underlying story that can be expanded on.

I didn't watch Clone Wars...are you saying that they've changed the story so that Darth Maul didn't die when he was sliced and diced? That is some serious Neighbours-style shit.
It makes sense for a children's cartoon, less so in an adult's movie. Terrible decision to include it, boggles the mind that no one stepped in and pointed out the stupidity of including it (looking at you, Ron Howard).

Alien was far superior to Aliens but they a different films. One is more suspense horror the other is more of a action film.

Hell I like Predator more than I like Aliens.
Aliens is quite overatted for mine.

a) Franchise or not, it stands with the other two classics of the genre as a movie on its own

b) Howard obviously bitter he turned down the chance to direct Phantom Menace and Maul back in 99

I get the classic without being a classic line.

The Predator

I think the fairest comparison of this movie is the Cowboys vs Aliens (which I love). CvsA was a classic film that knew what it was, a shameless whoring out of traditional genres for the novelty value. Nobody in it took it too serious, and it was fun enough to have some big names sign up.

That is what this movie tried to be. But through a script that I could have farted out in an hour, D grade actors, and more plot holes than a 13 year old's Star Wars fan-fic, it failed miserably. The true genius of the Predator franchise is the minimalism and terror you can create without showing the monster. This was not a movie in that vein.

I suspect that Hollywood had a C grade alien invasion movie script, and in an attempt to get it green-lit and on a money making trajectory, they turned it into a Predator movie to get the nostalgic suckers like me through the gates.

I wasn't bored, but I won't be seeing it again or recommending anyone else does. Let it be my gift to you, that I have sat through this toilet stain of a film, so you can spend your lives doing something more interesting..... like hanging out the washing.
