Just finished watching "Nomadland". I loved it. Craftily made. Frances McDormand was her usual excellent self. I've watched some videos on YouTube about nomads, including some made by one of the nomads in the film. The scenery in some places reminded me of where my brother lives in Arizona. What an interesting lifestyle, especially for those of us in our waning years. I could never do it. I don't drive. And I hate the damn cold.

I can understand why it was #1 on many film critics' lists for 2020.

Shadow in the Cloud 7/10

Perils of Pauline Actioner-Horror set in a WW2 plane about a package that needs to be delivered

Camera work emphasised the claustrophobic space inside the fighter plane/bomber

Chloe Grace Moretz stars and gives a good performance as ''Pauline''

Interesting that this is alright cause honestly the trailer looked awful

Arizona has some of the best scenery and landscapes I saw in my time in the US. Beautiful place.

Looking forward to seeing Nomadland at some point.

Watched The Dry last night at the new Palace at Pentridge. Nifty setup they have there. Think it will become my go-to.

I'd give it a 7/10, but the whole time I was thinking it's just a poor man's version of In My Father's Den, a New Zealand film from 2004. Similar premise but I think done to a lot higher quality. I'd highly recommend that anyone that liked The Dry to track it down.

Its not going to win awards and there is some wtf moments but its what it is - one peril after another - there is some background given which wasnt in the trailer

Monster Hunter 7/10

Switch off brain and sit back and watch an actioner based on the game of the same name

If I turned brain on it would be a 4 but ehh
As a massive fan of the series, I hated it. I felt like they spent too much time on the army unit and not enough on the Hunter, only about 7 monsters shown off (and of those only 4 big ones I think?) and my fave monster in the series was relegated to the last 30secs of the film.

Things I did like were the prepping for the Diablos, and the final fight. But that comes no where close to making up the rest of the movie

News Of The World. 2020.

Tom Hanks is a guy in 1870 Texas who makes a living reading stories from newspapers to townsfolk. On his travels he comes across a young white girl who has been raised by the native Kiowa people after they killed her parents. He has to take her across dangerous country to her biological aunt and uncle.

It was ok without being anything special, or as my son said "meh, it was a movie".

5/10.

The Invitation

Really enjoyed this. A weird unsettling dinner party. Movie wasn't over the top with jump scares and didn't try to be unnecessarily creepy. But built tension in its own way without giving away too much. Highly recommend this.

8/10

I thought it was a good premise but the dinner party scenes and conversations got boring. The start and end were good but there's a good hour where you could hit fast forward without missing much. I much preferred creepy movies Midsommar and Get Out.

5/10.

Wooo Reading Cinema is showing all first 3 Indiana Jones movies over 3 weekends.

Booked in for the first one!

cue Indiana Jones tune... dah dah dah daaaaah.... dah dah dah
Do us a favour & stand up afterwards to loudly petition for Indiana Jones to be played by a black actor or woman and see why kind of reaction you get from the people actually in attendance. I’d be interested on the feedback. 👍

That's fair. I had no idea of the background so wasn't expecting too much in that regard

Though I expect sequels to fix those issues you mentioned

I've got the perfect female Indiana

Promising Young Woman.

Good film, quite well done and stylish. Hopefully a film that a lot of problematic "nice guys" (the types depicted) see and think about.

Without wanting to spoil it, it will sit with you for a bit.

Carey Mulligan was great, playing against her normal type of character.
Has been quite divisive (especially the final act) but I was well and truly on board. Loved how Mulligan managed to craft a character that wasn't always easy to like but always easy to follow.

A couple more 2020's this weekend:

Greyhound - Tom Hanks WWII naval battles. It is what it is. Only 90 minutes which helps enormously.

One Night in Miami - Like Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, this is based on a successful play and never quite manages to be "cinematic" in any real sense. As a showcase for the four stars - Leslie Odom Jr. as Sam Cooke, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X, Eli Goree as Cassius Clay, and Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown - it's very good. The interplay between the four icons is excellent and aside from some weirdly cheesy moments, the direction from Regina King is excellent.

WW84

Was ok - I didn't mind it.

Seemed more to target a female demographic as an empowering chick flick than an action comic book movie with a more moral ethics compass direction than a drama or fighting action story..... I was still engaged enough though but not on par with the first WW.

The gf who I was with found it compelling and a good story and message.

5.5/10

Rated in the catastrophic sub 5 zone on IDMB suggests the above opinion needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Agree with you - trailer is one of the worst I've ever seen

Promising Young Woman - very well done revenge thriller, with a top notch performance from Carey Mulligan, who revels in the dark comedy of the role. Ending was mixed for me, with the far too obvious direction of the storyline of her boyfriend onwards. But an enjoyable and good movie.

Shadow in the Cloud - initial confusion about why there was such a 1980s vibe to something set in the 1940s aside, I settled in to a solid exercise in tension. Halfway through things dramatically turned and I began to wonder if the writers all took drugs halfway through working on this. By the time Kate Bush hit for the closing credits I thought maybe I was the one on drugs. Definitely entertaining, sometimes gripping, sometimes laughable. Very good cinematography.
