The Mummy

The_Mummy_%282017%29.jpg

I didn't think it was the disaster I'd read about, but it's definitely a bit confused of what it wants to be. To compare it to the Brendan Fraser one, which is a very well done action/adventure/comedy with small elements of horror, all beautifully balanced for an enjoyable romp, this is yeah, confused. First and foremost, it's action heavy, but there isn't really a sense of adventure. It also tries to balance moments of horror, which isn't bad, but it feels out of place. Lastly, there are moments of comedy, mostly in the first third of the movie which got laughs out of me, but it quickly disappears to it's detriment I think. It ends up some weird mishmash of action/supernatural/gritty drama, and it doesn't work.

Still, it's ok entertainment. I like Cruise and this is no exception, he Tom Cruises his way through it. Russell Crowe is pretty good, and Sofia whatsherface as the Mummy is stunning. I guess it's a typical new age Hollywood business movie, where all the parts do their bits well, but the end puzzle isn't really that great. Put the world's best tyres on a shitbox car and it's still a shitbox car in the end. It just doesn't feel like a film that was an unhindered creative process by a stable and passionate team.

Sabotage

Sabotage_%282014_film_poster%29.jpg

Post Governor Schwarzenegger flick. I was expecting some run of the mill men on mission story, but this surprisingly took a turn much closer to thriller. Arnie leads a DEA team that finds themselves being off'd one at a time in an act of revenge, which is investigated by an FBI agent. The characters and performances in this are much stronger than they have any right to be, but out of all of them it's Schwarzenegger who feels like he's the one going through the motions. It's dark and serious, I guess there's that modern buzzword again, gritty, but it's comfortable and consistent in it's tone all the way to the surprise ending. I liked it a lot more than I thought and I applaud it for trying something a little different, but it's still let down in a few areas. The pacing is off in parts, the camera work gets annoying at times, and the lead actor coming off as the weakest actor don't help. Some would find the characters not likeable, and many aren't, but I put that down to the intenseness of them. They aren't supposed to be liked. In the general overall sense, it's not that great a production despite more things going for it than it had any right to have.

Finally, it must be said, this movie is VIOLENT. It's seriously graphic, maybe the most graphic non-horror I can remember since Rambo 4, and both of those were still bloodier and gorier than a lot of horror anyway. It really adds a lot of punch and weight to many of the scenes as it's never played for comedy.

7/10... maybe 7.5

IT - I think everyone knows what this is about. Really incredibly well done, the kid leads nail it and Bill is fantastic as Pennywise, thought some dodgy CGI let it down a touch and it wasn't actually that scary save for a few jump scares 8/10

Agree.

I shall put the rest of my thoughts in a spoiler:

Ok first things first- THAT famous opening scene was a bit of a let down unfortunately. Did not help matters that back row top corner was rustling her ****ing chips bag so ****ing loudly i could barely hear any of it, but did try to focus (while not turning around to glare at the stupid bitch)- but I think less is more in this case. We shouldnt have seen the kid get his arm ripped off ,etc- the first time I saw Pennywise it was a bit of a laugh too. But things definitely picked up after that. (and the bitch did quieten down). Corey Feldman wannabe- omg legend. The one that was sick all the time- legend, Beverly- legend- the little fat kid from Hey Dad- legend. Just all of them were brilliant + the side characters. Imho the bully was scarier than the clown in some ways!! The other under lying themes- of domestic and sexual abuse + the extreme bullying were also terrifying as well. And the scene where the bully murders his dad was one of the most chilling I've ever seen. Loved it- my heart rate was measured at 120bpm- and thats 10 minutes after the final credits. 8.5/10

I think them showing the arm getting bitten off really upped the scare factor. No one expected the brutality on little georgie.

I disagree- at the start of the movie I think "less is more" would have worked better. But Im not like complaining or anything.. also re. the end with the kids floating in the air- is that because they were in some kind of "limbo" ie. in between alive and death- so when they came back down, they could finally RIP? Is that the kind of explanation behind all that...

Dunkirk

Meh. Found myself bored for a lot of it, to be honest. Have no idea how so many people are talking about it being edge of your seat stuff from start to finish. Opening scene hits you, sure, then there are a few more reasonably tense moments, but I never really got the sense that any one of main characters was actually in danger, even when things were looking dire. I know I'm in the minority, but for me it was a war film where it felt like nothing was actually at stake. Also, it suffers from the standard muddled sound mix that Nolan films tend to suffer from, which for me (and looking around the internet, I'm not the only one) was more annoying than engaging.

It

Not a lot of scares film but it's as good a movie I've seen recently about the horrors of bad parenting and how It is able to prey on these children because of the fears inherited from said parenting. Basically Stranger Things done right, too, as an 80s Spielberg homage goes. Movies about kids live and die on the authenticity of the performance and these ones were all really, really great (except maybe the Jewish kid but only because he got nothing to interesting to say/do).

Would be down for the adult sequel right now. 2 years? **** this shit.

One of the more overrated films in recent memory

I reckon we'll need that 2 years to recover from the first one!!

(but yes I agree- gap should be no more than 1 year)

I cannot remember Flatliners. Did not see it, ever.

What's it about..? Other than people flatlining..

Med students deliberately die for a short period of time and experience typical 'white light' type of scenarios until things get darker and dimensions cross.
