Europa Report - 6/10

Ok Sci-Fi Thriller about an expedition sent to one of Jupiters moons looking for signs of life. Wouldn't actively seek this out to watch but if you are bored and can't find anything else to watch it's worth a look.

Saw this I think 3 years ago. It was pretty good considering they were obviously working with a pissy budget. Apollo 18 is a movie with some similarities to it, I'd recommend that too.

Hoyts when I'm seeing a blockbuster movie made for a **** off size screen. Cinema Nova for arty-farty stuff though some of their theatres are crap. You definitely get less ads and trailers at Cinema Nova. In total I go to the movies about 10 times a year. Cost adds up quick and if a movie has been released on blu-ray somewhere it's an easy choice to download it for free and watch it at home where I can pause, rewind and not be distracted by jerks.

Terminator Genisys

I don't know what the hell I just sat through but I'm sure that it wasn't good. A convoluted retread of previous movies. Jai Courtney is poop and has a stupid poopy face. Emilia Clarke is easy on the eyes but as wooden as they come. Apparently it had a budget of $150 million? CGI looked like it was made using a casio calculator and the kind of budget you use for the McDonalds loose change menu.

Arnie the saving grace. Where is this franchise even going these days? That's two failed attempts at rebooting into new trilogies now.

Super glad James Cameron is giving us 20 bajillion shitty Avatar sequels that no one asked for while this franchise circles the drain.

3/10

I watched Salvation and Genisys on consecutive days. Salvation wasn't wonderful but it's a gem compared to bad comedy-drama Genisys. I would've been so pissed if I'd paid to watch that.

Arnie was the best part of TG but even that bordered on parody.

Only other good part was the future war scene. Much better than the Mad Max style of Salvation. More like what we seen in T2.

Putting this in here as it's the closest thing to a general chat thread on the movie board, but is Titanic the only PG American film to have nudity? Realised when I was doing some editing tonight.

It's on my list of movies never to be seen.

The Last Man on Earth (1964) - The first film adaptation of short novel I Am Legend starring Vincent Price. This a dark, solemn & depressing story and despite some budget-related problems I really enjoyed this. This is also the first film to depict zombies. Vincent Price is outstanding as always, but a lot more of a subtle acting performance than usual. There are some flaws, the pacing is a bit off and the micro budget shows itself more a few times. It's really quite a downer of a movie overall, surprising it was made in the 1960's. Certainly one of the more unique Vincent Price movies out there. 7.5/10

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Basically the most expensive b-movie ever made, and unlike any other blockbuster I've seen this year (or even last year) in that it was made with some real passion mixed with a genuine oddball sensibility. Plus it begins with a genocide and works its way around it like a mystery movie, and not like so many movies these days that are about impending doom that needs to be stopped (like the Guardians movies or even Rogue One) and you know it will because that's how movies work (so there are never any stakes at all).

And it was much better and more pleasantly entertaining than I ever thought it would be, especially because I dislike The Fifth Element so much. Not a huge Besson fan but I do feel isolated in my admiration for Lucy and now Valerian.

Lucy

Pretty disappointing. I knew it hadn't had the greatest reception, but I figured it'd at least be a decent 90 mins of action. But the dialogue was terrible (I barely made it through the first half hour because of it), action scenes were meh, plot was silly and it felt like it was over and done with before it really went anywhere. Morgan Freeman giving a lecture was just about the only decent part, purely because it was Morgan Freeman giving a lecture.

Atomic Blonde.

I've seen action-thrillers with more action in them than this that I was bored shitless with. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. No annoying actors, decent dialogue and plot, good soundtrack, and top notch action sequences. 8/10.

If you're gonna make an action flick, cut the crap and go MA or R rated unless you're doing an action-comedy like Rush Hour or Bad Boys, although more dark action-comedies like Deadpool would be nice.

Lights Out

A competent but nothing special horror movie. The one gimmick it has is certainly very effective for some great visuals and good jump scares. However this movie plays all its cards far too early and there's essentially nothing in the last 80 minutes that aren't in the first 10. The backstory into the creature/thing/ghost was also suddenly dumped on the audience way too quickly in a single exposition heavy scene. OK but could have been better.

5.5/10

The Fugitive

I hadn't seen this for quite some time but it's on Netflix now so jump on! An absolute classic thriller with brilliant performances from Ford and Jones. Nothing more needs to be said really.

Princess Mononoke

One of my all time favourites and just had the urge to go back and view it again during the week. Still as good as ever. A beautiful and captivating epic.

Annabelle: Creation.

Starting with a positive, it is MUCH MUCH better than Annabelle. I suppose that's a tick for them, but Annabelle was pretty horrendous.

Onto a negative, it's not quite as good as Ouija: Origin of Evil which was a nice little surprise considering how weak the Ouija movies beforehand were.

In the end, I can say that this was just OK and I think that's just because movies like this are beginning to have a hard time being inventive. It's not a bad movie but nothing was really effective and that's because you can see it coming... these films have been done to death.

The acting is strong, all the young girls in it are fine, the youngster who absolutely killed it in Origins of Evil is in this and is pretty solid again though she doesn't have the same presence.

Dr. Strange

After the TV series 'Hannibal', maybe it's a Mads Mikellsen thing; but I had absolutely no idea what was going on, but could not resist the visual magnificence of it all.

I just saw "The Big Sick".

Omg, I laughed, then I cried, then I cried from laughing so much. For those who wanna know the joke here it is:

I've always wanted to.. you know discuss 9/11 with someone.. like you. Um.. ok.. well it was awful, a complete tragedy. -pause- we lost 19 of our best men that day

^^^ that, is my type of humour. I almost lost it in the cinema, I had to make a conscious effort to stop laughing. Kudos Big Sick, kudos.

8/10 for the movie, overall.

Had a day off today so did a bit of a moviethon.

Life - Pretty good horror/science fiction 7/10

The Darkness - Stock standard horror movie 5/10

Black Butterfly - thriller with several twists but ending was lame 6/10

I love doing those at home- you gotta at least watch 3 b2b.

I also try to match the genres together. :$

Hah I lost it at the same part too!

I saw Annabelle: Creation today and while I really liked it - it was scary, well-written and well-acted - the ending left me confused.

Baby Driver - nothing short of good the whole movie. Not Edgar Wright's best movie though. 7/10

War of the Planet of the Apes - was much less an action movie than the previous movie (which I believe is the best of the series), very touching finale. 7.5/10

Sing Street - still the best movie I've seen in the last 8-9 years. Hits every note perfectly. 10/10

Titanic: Mini-Series.

I think it was done by the people who do Gosford Park. It had Jenna Louise Coleman and Toby Jones in it.

By about the 4th episode, I got a little sick of seeing the same scenes over again, despite them being from different perspectives. It might have been a little more tolerable if more of the characters were interesting but overall, this was a pretty boring way to spend 4 hours.

It's a little sad that they spent so much time with focus on the boring characters, because they did have a few interesting little stories in there, but they went unresolved or their endings were completely unsatisfying.

I'd suggest just watching the Titanic movie if you want a fix... at least the last hour is entertaining.
