Insomnia 2002

For some reason always avoided watching this despite the heavyweight combination of being a Christopher Nolan film with Al Pacino and Robin Williams as leads. The 90s film-making aesthetic is well and truly a thing of the past here with Nolan showing his ability behind the camera; some solid shots of the Alaskan scenery where the movie is set.

The Nolan's weren't involved with the story/screenplay which is a little more generic than their usual work, however I was pleased with how it all translated into a pretty satisfying cat-and-mouse style detective thriller 7.5/10

Iv'e got Brotherhood, Birds of Prey and Escape from Pretoria lined up for the weekend.

Looking most forward to Escape from Pretoria. Don't expect much from Birds of Prey.

The Invisible Man was pretty creepy, saw it tonight. Use of sound and camera probably the highlight. Characters a little one note but effective for what it set out to achieve. Works best as a clear metaphor for a serious topic.

One shot in particular in a, hmm, dining scene had me genuinely shook.

It's all about The T**ty Twister house band,
Tito and Tarantula.
Angry Cockroaches is one of my favourite songs and Dark Night isn't too bad either.

It's all about the dude out the front talking about pussy for 90 seconds straight.

Anyone here ever catch a film called Wind River. That’s worth having a look at. Must of skipped the cinemas here or had a very limited release cause I didn’t catch it until it was released on iTunes.

anyway Jeremy renner and Elizabeth Olsen. Tyler Sheridan flick (wrote Sicario, hell or high water)

was one of those very pleasant surprises where a film I had no expectations on turned out to be very good.
Great film, and I didn’t realise til after that he was the guy from Sons of Anarchy.

Taylor calls this, sicario and hell or high water his modern American frontier trilogy, they are all top shelf

Selma Hayak is overrated in the looks department. Looks like an Argentinian male soccer player

We’ve had some bad takes in this thread In our time but it’s hard to remember a worse one than this

yeah that was a hilarious realisation for me too.

he absolutely hates acting.

he’s also responsible for a tv show with Kevin Costner on Stan called Yellowstone

Cringe worthy. Suggests she looks like an Argentinian footballer, which was ridiculous enough. And then when questioned, posts a photo of Edinson Cavani. A Uruguayan.

Embarrassing stuff.

Fatal Deviation, Ireland’s only martial arts movie. It’s a passion project and the highlights include the one expensive looking scene being a total accident (and costing the director his car) and the one ‘name’ guest star clearly not being in the same room as the actors he’s working off.

Thanks for this Jack, watched it last night.

Baby Driver (2017) - I remember being desperate to see this film after they released the entire opening heist scene as a trailer. It's choreographed perfectly to Bellbottoms by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, which is just such a badass song (and one we used to test the new drummer in our band when we were first starting out haha) that I was completely hooked. But for some personal reasons, I wasn't able to get out to the movies and never got round to seeing it until last night when I realised it was on Netflix. It definitely lived up to the expectation I'd built up in my mind, even though I knew nothing of the film except that opening scene.

The soundtrack is possibly the best soundtrack ever and the way it is intertwined with the action on screen (particularly with Baby's interaction with the music) is really unique. Like all heist/caper films, you have to forget about plausibility and just go along for the ride (pun intended), but the characters all played well, especially the danger of Jamie Foxx's Bats. Also, the Deborah character was an absolute doppelganger of Shelly from Twin Peaks, so much so that I had to google they weren't somehow related.

Anyways, if you havent seen it, I'd highly recommend it. Especially if you're a music lover. 9/10

i hated it the first time i saw it, then saw it again a few weeks ago when it went on Netflix, liked it much more but i still cant cop anton egghead or whatever his name is as the lead actor. He turned a great film into a 7 out of 10 for me

Was it his woodenness? I thought that was more about the character than the actor.

One of the most overrated films of all time, it's a glorified Fast and The Furious.

The soundtrack is nothing to write home about either, I'm a music lover and I didn't love one damn song in it. 2/10

I know taste is subjective and all, but it feels insane to me that you didn't love any of the songs in there!

Universal Soldier: Regeneration

Universal_soldier_regeneration_poster.jpg

Direct to video third go at a Universal Soldier sequel. Only really watching as I keep hearing interesting things about the sequel, which I'll have a go at next. I guess really only for Van Damme fans or fans of the genre, what is presented is still solid action, bar a few points.

1. The location is supposed to be Chernobyl but it clearly, clearly, isn't. Not even close. Not even mixed in with any stock footage exterior shots. For a Chernobyl nerd like me that's disappointing.
2. Dolph Lungdren looked to film all his scenes before lunch and serves no real purpose in the movie other than to have Van Damme beat him up again, shockingly unoriginal, even for a film of this nature.

Now that's out of the way, the action is very solid, definitely shows that these are all experienced martial artists. People throw themselves around and in to everything. It's rough and great. Another highlight is the musical score, which is very vintage John Carpenter, it almost makes the movie feel like it could have been an early or later era Carpenter flick, you know, outside of his prime. Overall the quality of the film is definitely above standard straight to video fare.

5.5/10

Binged a little this weekend

Uncut gems-4/10
Not too bad but couldn't take Sandler seriously also my arse cheeks give off fukkn more expressions than K.Garnett

Ford v Ferarri 8/10
Really enjoyed it and if movie is accurate Ford II is a fukstick in how they treated Miles

12th Man 7/10
Liked this too and amazing bit of history

Honey Boy

Written by (and co-starring) Shia LaBeouf about his childhood and teenage years as a young actor.

A solid drama with decent performances by LeBouf who plays his own abusive father, and Noah Dupe who plays Shia as a child.
