Continued in Part 7:

What Sandler's doing now he's done before like in the movie "Click" for example. He can act a dramatic part. Doesn't mean he's an unheralded great actor all of a sudden. Like financialpanther said, hes ok, just people over-exaggerating the talent due to so many stupid comedies. Even in his best comedies there were still dramatic parts in those films that he handled well. It's not some renaissance. He can do it ok.

Is it a hot take to consider Sandler is an ok and serviceable dramatic acting talent - I feel there is an over exaggeration of his talent because of the roles he has done in the past?
You think he's been playing the long game? Set a really low bar by being awful in a bunch of awful comedies, then come out with a solid dramatic performance that blows everyone away because their expectations were so low? Genius! :D

But yeah, I don't know if he just hasn't had the opportunity to play many of these more dramatic roles due to being typecast as a fairly lowbrow comedy kind of guy, but he certainly seems better in them than his comedic ones. Even something like Punch Drunk Love, which kind of straddled that line between drama and comedy - he was great in that, too. Probably doesn't hurt that films with scripts and directors like that actually give him something to work with as an actor.

Nah i dont think thats too hot. I dont entirely agree with it personally but I'd say its fair.
I compare him to Jim Carrey in a way of a comedian that everyone was used to but once he did something like the Truman Show, it was revelatory but hyperbole followed due to every's perceptions being changed.

Big Daddy had genuine heart. Punch Drunk and Reign Over Me were the two where he showed his "chops" for me.

I think his best is genuinely good and absolutely Oscar Nom worthy.

Fair but then Carrey did Man On The Moon and Eternal and was genuinely amazing.

Sandler i think has been similar in that some of dramatic stuff was probably a little over hyped but some of it has been legitimately brilliant.

Oh I have Carrey much higher as an actor than Sandler (but a significant margin). Genuinely impressed by his body of work showing his chops.

Punch Drunk Love was great (and he was great in it) - but I don't have him near the same postcode as someone like Carrey.

I think Carrey has the higher ceiling (man on the moon was DDL stuff) but for me they have a similar quantity of good dramas.

Off the top of my head

Carrey - Truman, Eternal, Man on the Moon, The Majestic
Sandler - Big Daddy, Punch Drunk, Reign Over Me, The Meyerwitz Stories, Uncut Gems (I havent seen Hustle yet)

Thats 4 v 5 (for the record i didnt like Uncut Gems at all but i appreciate that its good). Sandler doesnt have anything quite as good as Eternal or Man on the Moon but theyve both done the same number of "good" dramas.

Better comedy by far Carrey too. Legendary comedy. Carrey wins the bout on comedy and on dramatic talent.
But Sandler isn't a complete shmuck at acting.
I forgot to mention Reign Over Me, and Funny People that gets glossed over for drama, playing a grumpy nasty kind of guy too.

Agree on ceiling.

Though I remove Big Daddy - it is essentially the same Sandler comedies but with a bit more heart. I did like Reign Over Me - also, Carrey had 'Kidding' which was quite a good one for him in a serious role.

Im an old softie so I like 50 first dates, plus it reminds me of Hawaii (funny that) and Click is worth watching if only for Kate Beckinsale

Could remove Truman based on similar sentiment. Both my faves of theirs and it’s my list so they stay 😂

Not at all. The sample size is small, but consistent enough to believe it's not a coincidence or fluke.

Thank god we've got more Sandler/Carey debating...

Beckinsale was in Love & Friendship a few years ago which was highly acclaimed. I found it a bit meh but who am I?
