I’ve enjoyed-
Before Trilogy
Ruby Sparks
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Breakfast At Tiffany’s

Thanks for this recommendation, seems like a little-known gem. Really enjoyed it.

Zoe Kazan (Paul Dano's girlfriend) was a great lead and based on this, can write a screenplay too.
Thanks for the recommendation of Ruby Sparks, I watched it last week.

Thought it was pretty solid, and Zoe Kazan was great.

The switch from rom com to psychological drama in the final act was interesting, and Paul Dano got to do his Paul Dano thing well. He’s such an insufferably desperate person to watch, or at least his characters are.

My only beef was with the ending. I don’t think it was appropriate given what unfolded just before, but it didn’t ruin the film for me.

Why is the green screening in Green Latern way less distracting than any later DC or Marvel?

watched I used to be famous and Lou on Netflix

the first is a British movie about an ex boy band member trying to restart his career who meets an autistic teen who plays drums

its pretty light fare as you'd expect but the actor who played the kid is a real drummer who is on the spectrum so that was cool

Lou - bit of a paint by numbers movie about the "retired" ex military type who has to save a kid

Allison Janney being the retired ex military type was good, itsa decent cast and well enough made

Elvis was a straight white southern dude with questionable taste in female partners.

Ain't nobody winning an oscar for that, compared to a gay brown guy.

Vesper (2022)
It's easy to forget how far child/teen acting has come over the last decade or so, the 13yr old lead is amazing, 10-20 yrs ago she would have been played by a 20 year old.
Shame she was wasted on a pretty average film, too derivative, cheesy and cliched for me.

I despised I Used To Be famous. It could have been quirky and fun but it was dour with little humor at all. I have seen better depictions of autism on shows like Atypical

Devil Wears Prada

When this was new it was a secret pleasure, a teen guy being really in to a movie about the fashion industry or something. Well hopefully I have matured a bit because it is no longer secretive. Genuinely entertaining movie with Meryl Streep knocking it for six, not without great support from Stanley Tucci, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt. It always holds my attention. Some of the characters are a bit unlikeable though, the ones the movie actually wants us to like. Loses a point though for not mentioning Peter Brock in the monologue about cerulean blue, an unforgivable oversight as he invented the colour with his VK Commodore.

9/10

The Kids Are All Right

Lesbian couple face drama when their adopted children want to meet their sperm donor biological father. I like Mark Ruffalo, he's one of those guys that's managed to leverage his marvel fame in to being in a lot of smaller, interesting films, and he's very reliable. Can't really rate it as it was just on in the background whilst I cleaned the house, but when I took five minutes to watch it in parts, seemed good.

Atypical is good but the actor isn't on the spectrum

Heartbreak High reboot as good autistic character played by an actor who is ND

my comment wasn't on whether the movie was good, more that they gave the role to someone with lived experience

Some Like It Hot (1959, Apple) -
A zany hi-jinks escapade about two men who escape the mob by joining a touring women's jazz band.
I haven't seen a Marilyn Monroe film before and never understood the appeal previously. After seeing this though it's obvious that she definitely had charisma. Often it was Marilyn simply widening and narrowing her eyes whilst giving a monologue in a cute voice but there is no denying her movie star presence. I imagine she pushed the boundaries of overt sexuality for the time.
Most importantly though the film is genuinely funny, if occasionally overbearing, and the 2 hours flew by. It hasn't aged poorly either which is no mean feat given its themes including cross dressing. 8.5/10.

Seaspiracy (2021, Netflix) -
About the impact the fishing industry has on our oceans.
This is the most informative environmental doco I've watched. Even despite the usual trappings of overplaying the emotional aspects and getting preachy. Particularly informative was the business of seeming environmental conscious organisations and governmental subsidising of the industry. Apart from basic animation and amatuerish narration I was impressed by the production level as well. 9/10.

See How They Run

A visually pleasing movie set in London's West End in 1953, with Agatha Christie's play "The Mousetrap" having it's 100th show celebration.

Simple murder mystery / comedy that is enjoyable to watch if not amazing. But I think the movie has some self awareness about this.

Dryly funny and engaging from the start, it knows its place and doesn't drag on. An hour and a half well spent.

A solid 3 stars.

Watched Daredevil with Affleck again tonight, it’s one I revisit from time to time.

I maintain that it’s a really underrated superhero movie.
From memory the directors cut is actually not bad.

What they put out is a guilty pleasure for me. Thomas Janes punisher is the same in that regard.
