Arrival

Holy ****, what an incredible movie. Intriguing, thought provoking, engaging. Unbelievably well acted by Amy Adams.

Incredible story and just so well done. This one will stand out for a while.

The non linear beginning/end is phenomenal.

The cinematography, the musical score. It’s just perfect.

Been a while since I came across a movie that moved me quite like that one.

9.5/10
One of about ten movies ever I've given a 10/10 to.

Drive Away Dolls

Margaret Qualley who I love plays a lesbian chick. I wouldn't bother watching this. It has some Coen vibes early (as it's directed by one) but largely forgettable. The Aussie who was the co-lead should have a good career in Hollywood though I think, I like her.

Yep mate and I felt the same way.

I.S.S (2024)

The plot starts relatively quickly, as we get to know the Americans and Russians who star in it. It’s no high art with its themes, and the plot is played super straightforwardly. That is no issue, as there is some padding in between more character interactions. The CGI is beautifully done, save for a few parts of it. The acting is sincere, and the action is well-executed. The world below is at war, yet we are given little context. All you know is the US has been nuked, and later, what looks like Europe, too. The biggest disappointment of the movie was the mediocre ending. Overall, though, it was a cool little thriller set on the International Space Station. 6/10 (Above Average)

If you get a chance, try and read the short story it was adapted from, "The Story of Your Life' by Ted Chiang. It is a wonderful piece of writing and the film did it proud.

Incredible film. Really Denis Villineuves most underrated.

How does the Bone Collector stack up. That one is a pretty solid film but not executed as well.
Ahhhh I think the bone collector is REALLY hokey personally.

As far as that sort of procedural to catch a killer set ups Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon are both close. Probably others but they spring to mind

Yeah, it's a brilliant film and one I've watched quite a few times now and it's like you find something new in it each time.

I loved the cinematography. Bradford Young combined large scale shots around the alien spaceship with close intimate moments of Louise (Amy Adams) and her daughter.

The score missed out on a probable Oscar because it featured some of Max Richter's work that had already been used in Shutter Island.

Much of the linguistic stuff went over my head but apparently it was well grounded. I would have been OK if they had spent a few more minutes going from exchanging simple words to 'thinking like a heptapod'. The montage with a Jeremy Renner exposition voice-over felt very inserted.

My initial thoughts after watching it were questioning why we live in a world where nations are in violent conflict. Naive, I know.

I thought they did a good job with the linguistics stuff in that they basically said “here’s an expert and this is very very ****ing hard”, I don’t know that we needed to really get more than that

Quoting myself but prisoners (Villenueve) probably warrants a mention.

I’m gonna watch this tonight, thanks to you Jatzy

Inside Out 2

Really really good. A gut check for the adults about our adolescences and if you have kids what’s to come.

I actually didn’t love the first inside out but this one nailed it imo.
I reckon it’s got the best depiction of a panic attack I’ve ever seen. It was a great movie to watch with my kids and started a lot of big conversations with them.

The whole anxiety angle and the puberty stuff it all just worked perfectly.

My little man is too little to talk it through with him but he was LOCKED in.

Also good hockey scenes

Will be a good one to revisit with him in a couple of years. My youngest (4) enjoyed it but his brother (6) learnt a heck of a lot. I even got to explain puberty afterwards 😅

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice

I think a high-level pre-production meeting with director Tim Burton went something like this:

Section Heads: So Tim, how weird would you like your new movie Beetlejuice-Beetlejuice to be?

Tim Burton: Yes
