A Quiet Place: Day One

This film really adds nothing to the Quiet Place story and frankly has no real reason to exist at all BUT Quinn and Nyongo are magnificent, their chemistry and vulnerability is absolutely magnetic, I was so invested in their characters and story that this film worked really really well. Credit to them and the writers for pivoting the story to this because otherwise theres nothing left in that story to squeeze.

Way better than it should be/10

Patriot Games

I remembered this being better when I was younger. Still not bad but not as polished as I remember it being.

Also interesting that Clancy distanced himself from this one after reading the script.

6.5/10

Damn its 32 years old.

Time for a rewatch.

Such an amazing cast too, with Ford, Sean Bean, Jackson, and Jones.

Wyatt Earp

My Costner play through continued last night with one I'd been putting off due to the sheer length of it.

Must say, I was wrong on this one. At no point did it really feel like it dragged on or that it, in fact, went for over three hours.

Really engaging story, plenty of action, love stories thrown in, despair, deaths etc.

Pleasantly surprised by this one.

8/10

Wyatt Earp came out around the same time as Tombstone didnt it? Tombstone became legend and Wyatt Earp didnt.

i think theyre both really good.

Yeah they did - I was actually reading Costner procured all of Hollywood's western costumes for Wyatt Earp - forcing the Tombstone project to have to source theirs from Europe.

I agree, really enjoyed both. Not sure why Wyatt Earp wasn't considered as good really, has all the same makings.

If you enjoyed this and enjoyed the story or want to know more Netflix had a doco on Wyatt which may fill out some back story for you

worth noting that despite coming later, Wyatt Earp still nearly doubled Tombstone in international gross, just wanted to throw that out there. It flopped and the more modestly budgeted Tombstone was a success, but it was more Americans chose Tombstone and overseas chose Wyatt Earp.

Wyatt Earp was released in a more competitive period (Lion King, Speed, Wolf, Shadow, Blown Away, Flintstones, etc., plus the home World Cup was on). Tombstone didn’t have any direct competition, other hits then were Mrs Doubtfire, Sister Act 2, Pelican Brief, Wayne’s World 2, etc. so it was a bit of counter programming then. The critics were also raving about Kilmer so it got some awards season curiosity as well.

Sat down with Sinjin Jnr to watch a couple last Sat night:

Deadpool & Wolverine: Finally free on Disney. Got to admit I really didnt think it was awesome, I got lost in the plot a bit, didnt really get the void (have I missed a movie where this is explained??) some cool action sequences and seeing my favourite Xman appear from when I was a kid and hooked on the early cartoon was cool but reckon Deadpool 1 was better. Maybe I had too high expectations. 6/10

Twisters: Pretty much a remake of the Paxton/Hunt one with a refreshed cast. Was pretty cool, subpar acting but the action sequences were good. 7/10.

Mostly explored in Loki series

Kinds of Kindness

Yorgos has gone full yolo with this one.

I've been time-poor so broke this up into parts - which worked well given it’s a 3-part anthology. Intentionally weird and alienating but I found each ‘episode’ wildly amusing. It looks really slick (if you don't mind an incessant fisheye lens), and has an incredible cast. Plemmons; Stone; Dafoe; Qualley; Chau; all having a great time.

There is also something about having a Yorgos bizarro-world juxtaposed against a modern setting that I find super effective (after a couple of period pieces). It's a tough movie to recommend but will make my best of the year list for sure 8/10

Terminator

Recently imported the 4K version (before I knew that it was going to get an Australian release - funnily enough the Aussie release is next week). Movie will forever be awesome and it looks great in the 4K format IMO (opinions may vary as people are up in arms about it on online movie forums). I just had to get used to the brightness levels being a bit different than I was used to on the dvd/bluray versions.

Also love that the 4K version includes an audio channel of the original (mono) audio - meaning a lot of the gun noises are more Clint Eastwood - Dirty Harry style volume.... rather than the pew pew pew noises that they were replaced with in the 2000's.

Tombstone is a more contained, almost action type western flick.

Wyatt Earp is a more broad sweeping character epic over large timeline that gets a bad rep IMO.

Deadpool and Wolverine

It's fine.

Maybe I'm over the comic book stuff, and I'm over the Ryan Reynolds/The Rock style of humour (gosh that movie they were in together? Didn't finish that) so this didn't thrill me, though it was entertaining in a mediocre way.

There's a lot of good movies, even within the comic book area, that balance the humour and drama better than this, thinking Guardians of the Galaxy, Spiderman No Way Home, Spiderverse, etc. Even the first Deadpool. This one is firmly more interested in firing off a joke a second at the expense of characters and immersion imo. Bringing back Jackman for a last hurrah was kinda not used well enough and didn't give him enough drama to work with. It's all very surface level bare minimum 'I did a bad thing in the past'. On top of it I fojnd the action scenes to be a bit uninspired and uncreative.

Good parts are well, it was good enough. The cameo characters were done well and good to see. Enough of the humour did land and the action was still serviceable. It was a good way to pass a couple hour, and even the behind the scenes montage at the end was kinda touching.

Maybe my standards are becoming too high but I think the movie just assembled the cast and said that'll do, pumped out a script and let Reynolds fill in the gaps. It's still obviously not as adult as the first film too, they make jokes about drug use being the one thing Disney won't allow, but the complete lack of sexuality was also noticeable, since Deadpool 1 didn't mind chucking in some gratuitous strip club scenes. It's really just Thor 4 with blood and swearing... Ok it is a bit better than that but they're in the same ballpark IMO.

Ok movies that didn't meet the potential of a strong cast and story, and tried to be non stop comedy instead.

6... Maybe 6.5/10.

Edit, maybe a touch harsh, bumping up to 6.5-7/10

Another edit, they name drop the Punisher several times and never feature him, so that's a little shitty.

I enjoyed it more than this but I also can’t really disagree with any of the criticism. It’s meta to the point of being totally inaccessible and it exists purely for fan service.

About the only thing elevating any aspect of it is Jackmans performance cause he’s REALLY serving as the gruff and cranky, too old for this shit, grizzled Wolverine.

Jackman's best performance is his two word special in X-Men First Class.

Heretic (2024)

Third time lucky for me on the horror/thriller front after missing out a bit with Longlegs and The Substance.

This was a really well acted, cerebral thriller. Whilst there was a little gore/jump scares, these were kept to a minimum. The movie relied more on a feeling of slowly escalating dread.

Hugh Grant is excellent and the two main co stars very good too. It almost had a nineties feel to it with longer takes and extended dialogue.

I liked Grant's cardigan, I liked the homely feel of his house and always enjoy rainy scenes when I'm sitting comfortably inside the cinema.

It gets you thinking about religion, power, control, faith and all of that. Couple of gags here and there for good measure too.

Four stars.

Moana… first time watching this. Maybe I’ve just seen too many Pixar films and the template is just too familiar but this really didn’t land at all for. It’s competently made, the songs are fine but the central theme of being true to yourself and following your heart is pretty thin, and the action and humour pretty rote. I can understand young girls and islander people finding it more meaningful but it just didn’t really work for me being well outside the target audience. 5/10.
