I'm starting to think Gladiator II isn't worth seeing at the cinema.

I wasn't a fan of Gladiator, I saw it in a cinema in Belgium where they had French and Dutch subtitles that took up half the screen.

The subtitles weren't the problem though, I also saw The Perfect Storm there which I enjoyed a lot more than Gladiator,

The Killer's Game (2024)

Dave Bautista plays a hitman who is told he has 3 months to live and takes out a contract on himself so his girlfriend can get the insurance money. He subsequently finds out that he was misdiagnosed and must then fend off the army of former colleagues trying to kill him.

There's an unlikely good chemistry between Bautista and Sofia Boutella, who looks as beautiful as ever. Ben Kingsley chips in with a minor role. It's an action movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. Switch your brain off for 90 minutes and enjoy.

6/10

The perfect storm is a brilliant movie and perfect to rewatch every 5-10 years, just when you forget how great it is.

65 - It sounded like it had an interesting plot - a space pilot (played by Adam Driver) landing on Earth 65 million years in the past in the age of the dinosaurs - but the execution was terrible and watching a DVD of the infamously bad Richmond vs. St Kilda game played in late 2016 (Saints beating the Tigers 8.5-53 to 6.8-44 in perfect weather conditions at the MCG) would be a more appealing prospect. An atrocious film in every aspect, no redeeming qualities, just flat out bad.

Red Rooms - Follows the court case of a serial killer accused of torturing teenage girls and profiting via red rooms (snuff films) and a woman who has taken a keen interest in the case, showing up to trial to watch the proceedings every day. Juliette Gariépy, who plays the woman, is so disquieting in her performance that when a particular scene happens it hits you like a ton of bricks. One of the performances of the year, and one of the films of the year. It's what Longlegs wanted to be. 9/10
Awesome this is on my list to watch, I completely forgot I had it on my rotation

Blink Twice (2024)
The final act just went to crap, it was building a nice bit of suspense and intrigue then just imploded like the Titan submersible.

Channing Tatum was well cast, lots of unexpected cameos too but it felt like they were all holding back, I mean c'mon you have Christian Slater in your thriller/horror and he doesn't bust out his trademark neurotic psycho persona.

Hard to recommend on the last act alone.

Had some Village Gift Cards so we went to see Gladiator II on Friday night.
Not too bad, not a patch on the original though.
A couple of things annoyed me about it though..
Spoiler
  • The scene where they filled the Coliseum with water and man-eating sharks while they fought in scaled down Galleons was just fking stupid and shouldn't have made the final cut of the film.
  • The twin Emperor with syphilis was funny but overly comical in this film, although I did piss myself laughing when he made his Monkey, Dundas, one of his 2 official consults
  • More could've been done with Pedro Pascal's character

anatomy of a fall

definitely captured the behind the scenes experience of someone on trial. i didn't watch the entire thing and tuned out for half an hour somewhere in the middle. aside from that it was entertaining enough. good performance by the dog.

Gladiator II swear websites were reporting this movie as getting made 14+ years ago. Probably quoting the writer-director saying "If we can come up with a good story and the studio wants to do it then yes sure why not" and running with it.

Gladiator 1 remember watching it in what felt like a sold out cinema

Been watching various movies in recent weeks - zoomed through the first 3 Vacation films (Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation etc)
Predator 1 & 2

Gladiator - Binge

In preparation for G2 I decided to rewatch this and yes I was entertained

Still holds up

I watched it less than two weeks ago (first time in ages!), I'm semi watching it again now as it's on GO! on FTA..... Tempted to put it on again so I can watch it without the commercials LOL.

Gladiator is a masterpiece

I think it's an awesome movie wouldn't say it's 10/10.... but a very enjoyable 8/10 for me. It was like the second movie I had a bootleg of lol.
Got it on VHS
Got the dvd wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back in 2002.
Bluray around 2010ish
4K about 2 years ago.

I like some elements of the director's cut (which is really just the deleted scenes reinserted into the film). But the theatrical slaps!

I have no interest in Gladiator 2 - might check it out when it's on streaming (cheap rental) just to say I've seen it. Interesting to note that Ridley wants to do a Gladiator III as well - wonder how they'd manage it.

That's going a bit far, it was a decent blockbuster but not that great, Rusty won an Oscar for it but he's had much better roles imo.
I always think of it as a "body of work" award. He earnt it as much for insider the year before as he did for gladiator.
Hard to believe what a role he was on at the time when you see the weird character actor stuff he does now.

Imagine I said there was a movie where some people had to survive getting from one place to another

What if I also said they were getting chased by gangs dressed up in all manner of ridiculous outfits and names

Oh wait and what if I said holding it all together was a radio announcer who was giving narrative on the chase?

No its called The Domestics on Prime made in 2018

Its a survive the drive cross country escapade where the reason is because the family have stopped communicating.

Its ok but its just so trope-y with the innocent transformed into murderous in an instant with no logical reason

Lance Reddick is in this as is Kate Bosworth

A bit of a weekend for left wing political movies, which wasn’t by design.

No Other Land - co-directed by an Israeli and a Palestinian who both feature large in front of the camera too. The Palestinian lives in a village in the West Bank that has been slowly destroyed by settlers, with people finding the IDF and bulldozers outside their door one day ready to destroy their house. The Israeli is a journalist who comes to document and befriends the villagers and hopes that in telling their story that it will cause people to demand action. I thought the nature of the relationships were interesting, with honest conversations about their friendship in light of the obvious power dynamic. Their stated hope that the film will convince the world to act is obviously a flawed one - we've seen far worse things in the last year than a lot of what is depicted here and nothing's changing (not to downplay what we see here, which does include two unarmed people being shot point blank). Nonetheless, I thought there was a fair bit in this to contemplate on. We're quite fortunate to be having it distributed in Australia - nobody has yet to pick it up for the US, so it's worth going out of your way.

I Am Cuba (1964) - the Soviets sent Mikhail Kalatozov, then their most celebrated working director, to make this Cuban-Soviet coproduction to celebrate the recent revolution. The film is told in vignettes, featuring a sex worker, a sugar farmer, student rebels and a rural farming family, showing the conditions of their lives pre-revolution that would lead the people to rise up as they did. Kalatozov and his cinematographer, Sergey Urusevsky, is known for pulling off some of the most miraculous camera shots you've ever seen. This is no exception, eliciting gasps at points at what's on the screen. The stakes rise with each story and with them each act of resistance, so it works as a real rousing film. Funny to see this in a cinema, with an audience that was half young cinephiles wanting to see a movie considered a classic and half old communists wanting to be inspired. I think everyone left with what they were looking for!

Loved Shame and 12 Years a Slave. Might check this out.
had copped a middling reception so far (tend to disregard that sort of thing personally), but to me this is a classic, already watched it a few times. If you generally like his directorial style as well as the film’s subgenre then this will hit with you. First truly great film to come along on Apple TV+ (majority of their features deserve maligning)

This time last year in this thread we had wildly diverging reactions to Fincher’s Killer (which like this isn’t necessarily performancey or plotty), therefore word of caution towards my recommending this to you, but I hope you dig it!
