The Hunt - thought it was ok and funny in parts. If you understand it’s satire it’s a commentary on current culture issues. Teases both sides of the political spectrum ..some conservatives got their noses out of joint when first released - 6.5/10

Red One

This is actually not bad, it’s a bit of harmless Christmas shenanigans. The Rock is playing The Rock and Evans is having some fun with his half hearted shitheel persona he’s done a few times now. Lucy Liu looks ridiculously good for 50 something and Kiernan Shipka is… in the movie.

It’s not gonna win any awards but it’s also not nearly as bad as a lot of the reviews are making out. I think the films issue is that it’s too dark to be a proper kids film and it’s too kiddy to be a film for adults (not to mention its stars aren’t marketable to either of those demographics really).

Big

Tom Hanks stars in this from 1988 as a kid who wishes they were bigger and gets his wish

There are iconic scenes in this - Heart and Soul in the toy store - trampoline and overall its still a good movie about losing that kid inside you

Sure theres a problematic romance but the overall story is wonderfully done

Robert Loggia , Elizabeth Perkins and John Heard all co-star

Fatman - Stan

Continuing the theme from Red One that the joy and spirit of Christmas is dying comes this starring Mel Gibson as the Fat Man and how his operation needs a money boost

The main story is what happens when you punish the bad list and the consequences .

A kid hires a hitman - as always wonderfully played by Walter Coggins - to kill Santa because he got a lump of coal

Again there is no great story or Oscar performances in this movie its just a Xmas movie with a difference

And guns and Action and Walter

I kinda liked Robbie Williams's music until his pivot in to hip hop which killed all his momentum for me, but before that he has the song Me and My Monkey, so the monkey thing makes sense to me.

Big Hero 6

Watched a few very good kids movies recently.

This was not one one of them, though it certainly wasn't bad. It was just, good. The standard has been set pretty high by the Inside Outs and Moana. I'll probably end up seeing it another half a dozen times knowing my kids, so it might grow on me more.

7/10
Yeah you know what? A second and third viewing and I was totally harsh and slept on this. It's a solid 8. Picked up more subtlety in some of the themes and some great visual gags. The action is really well done, it's more action orientated than most movies of its type I think, the acting is good, the writing is funny or can be moving when it's gotta be, and it's got heart to it, the kind of heart in a film that feels like a throwback to the 80s films that were known for 'heart'.

The down side may be the pace, it's very briskly paced, the kind where if you go make a cup of tea you likely miss plot development and need to ask what happened, and the Fred character is sometimes too much.

Longlegs

You can add me to the camp who like it. Beautifully shot and great performances. Great sense of dread throughout.

The third act, particularly script wise, lets it down a bit. It could have been a great film.

I don’t say this is a criticism of the criticism but I’m not sure what people were expecting of Red One? It’s no masterpiece and The Rock has gone full Vin Diesel with his “craft” shit but it’s a perfectly fine Xmas movie isn’t it?
Maybe perfectly fine is the problem? Just a safe ho hum thing with a few big names to turn a bit of profit?

I haven't seen it and I agree I don't know what some may have been expecting, but sometimes inoffensively average can be worse than ambitious, but awful.

It’s more a question of expectation. If you tuned in expecting Citizen Kane then yeh you’re gonna be very disappointed but also, that’s on you.

You know full well what this is gonna be before you even turn it on, if that’s going to really shit you then why watch it? If you’re expectations were already low and this went lower fair enough, I don’t agree I think it was fine, not every film is gonna be great (or even good) it just seems like some people are pissed because they thought this was gonna be good before the jump and that’s really odd to me.

Carry-On

A lot like Red One but imo a bit better. Low expectation action/thriller that hangs together pretty competently and had a pretty rewarding payoff.

I’ve read a lot of criticisms about plot armour, I’d have to assume those people haven’t watched a lot of action adventure films. This one absolutely had it but not excessively or outlandishly.

Its a classi, stumbled on it on tv a few weeks ago.

I’d say it’s more like Redeye than anything else. Popcorn thriller, nothing too special but fairly inoffensive

Carry-On felt like a better version of Red One. Nothing special, but it holds together well and has a satisfying ending. Sure, there’s some plot armor, but that’s pretty standard for action flicks. Perfect for a casual watch.

Excited to get to another theme list curtesy of spinynorman but knocked out some more films on my general "to-watch" list this week instead.

The VVitch (2015, Netflix) -

Seen 2 Robert Eggers films now (this and The Lighthouse) and love his filming and idea of his films more than the actual execution. This is a religious horror set in the Pilgrim days of America. So it has the ultimate handicap as I find religious/supernatural stuff to be idiotic. But for what this is it's executed well. That said I was disturbed in the moment to see a butt-naked Anya Taylor Joy as she looked bloody young in this (turns out she was 18 and this was her film debut). 5/10. That said I'm predicting Eggers to make a film I will love as a masterpiece. Maybe it will be Nosferatu..

Enough Said (2013, Disney+) -

The Soprano's has invaded my Youtube algorithm atm so it was timely to see Gandolfini in something. This a mature romcom that actually felt like it left a little meat on the bones with some tight editing keeping this at a brisk 90 mins. If you like the idea of seeing Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (both acting with no resemblance to their iconic TV characters) in a romcom you won't be disappointed. It's very much a "you'd know if you'd like it" film. 7/10.

I loved the witch and I think the Northman is fantastic as well.

The lighthouse didn’t work at all for me.
