Movie What's the last movie you saw? (7)

Had this discussion before Leo is more a professional actor these days, a very big name at that though. He's not likely to do the same basic but entertaining blockbusters Cruise has become known for anymore. He wants something he can disappear in to and meaty role. He definitely did go a through a 'movie star' phase earlier in his career.

Maybe Ryan Gosling still has movie star vibes?

Two of my favourite Cruise performances that don’t get mentioned as much were in Magnolia where I thought he was very good and his cameo in Tropic Thunder

Me neither I just consider it part of someone's reputation. Tom Cruise runs, JCVD does the splits, Sydney Sweeney gets her top off.

It's also part of the trends of cinema. Like action stars disappeared and adult rated action with them, so did the erotic thriller and the big name actress that does them.

People automatically assume there's some weird stuff going on because I comment on it, and the inference that all reference to nudity is inherently sexual and pervy and makes people uncomfortable. It's an aesthetically pleasing part of watching a movie I guess, movies are a visual experience, and it shows someones commitment to a role, but that's as far as I'll take it. So is Nic Cage's hairdo in Con Air. To me if people think it's creepy or weird, it reflects more on them, and I don't think it should be taboo.

I’ve never said anything about it being taboo. Gratuitous maybe but frankly unnecessary **** and ass in a film does nothing for me. Sweeney has been in plenty of stuff and had her boobs out sometimes and not other times. Hasn’t made any material difference to me.

When he has not been hitting it for 6? His output has slowed down but to me the quality is still exceptionally consistent.

Pre 86 Taps and Legend aren’t great.

Post 96 eyes wide shut isn’t great, neither is mi2 (you like it we know but it’s not great). I enjoyed vanilla sky but it’s middling to bad for most, lions for lambs, Valkyrie, Rock of Ages very famously the Mummy.

He’s a movie star and a great one (maybe the greatest) at that but they all have misses.

I maintain he should have had at least one Oscar if not two for Magnolia, Jerry Maguire and Born on the Fourth.

Gosling is interesting. His last few are defs movie star shit (noting that the gray man was terrible) but just prior to that he had first man with Damien Chazelle, Blade Runner 2049 with Villenueve and La La Land with Chazelle.

There’s a prevailing theory that Cruise basically said “**** this” to Hollywood and being a serious “actor”somewhere between eyes wide shut and the last samurai that he’s just sunk further and further into having fun and doing shit he wants to do (after repeated snubs).

Gosling might be living in the same sphere but I could also still see him jumping into some actor shit too.

Should’ve been nominated at least for Magnolia. Wasn’t a big fan of the other two movies and was up against some stiff opposition. The great DDL and Geoffrey Rush

He's great in Rock of Ages. I ain't letting that through to the keeper. Rock of Ages in general is pretty good for me.

I would consider The Mummy his only bomb.

Gratuitous nudity is great but within the right context, same as gratuitous violence.

Did I find the debauchery depicted in Wolf of Wall Street a bit much? Yeah honestly the point was hammered home. It was made and it kept going. With a sledgehammer. But if the film has none of it... seeing is believing you know? The debach nature of the characters and situation would have been undersold. It definitely needed some of it. But in b-grade flicks that can probably balance it with like gratuitous violence, it's a great time at the movies, good exploitation cinema.

I think most movie stars are actors, or at least have that experience. Hard to think of many who aren't. Keanu in his heyday probably didn't have a strong dramatic record?

Thinking of movie stars since the 1990s

Wil Smith can act.
Denzel can act.
Nic Cage can act.
Brad Pitt can act.
Stallone can act.
Mel Gibson can act.
Michael Douglas can act.
Kevin Costner can act.

Etc etc.

Then you got borderline movie stars, guys like Gerard Butler or Ben Affleck or Brad Cooper or Matt Damon? Not sure where they stand.

Then you got comedy stars, those guys are unfairly maligned and considered separately. Jim Carey, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler....ok maybe not Sandler he dug his own grave there.

I enjoyed the movie and gave it a 6/10, and that score is only because I have watched the previous movies of this "current adaption". Even then I still wouldnt have told anyone to go and watch this in the cinema.

Im not sure I would be recommending anyone to see it if they havent watched Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the movies following it. Its definitely not IMO, a stand alone movie to fully enjoy and grasp what is going on.

I enjoyed the final scene and was pleasantly surprised. Its definitely set up for a sequel of sorts.

I think Rush and Shine has aged horrendously as an Oscar win but that’s probably a hot takes thread.
Woah, why is there hate for Valkyrie. I very much enjoyed that.
For the record I enjoyed Valkyrie. I also enjoyed eyes wide shut and Vanilla Sky but they weren’t received particularly well.

I CBF with the nudity discussion, I just don’t care enough but Rock of Ages sucks. Cruise comitted and gives it his all but that movie is shitful.

Only really 2 is dated tbh.

1 is still a world class old school espionage thriller and proper psycho sexual de Palma film (cruise has more weird sexual chemistry with Vanessa Redgrave than any leading lady ever).

3 is the Brad Bird one with PSH as the villain.

Granted those 3 feel very different in tone to 4 onwards (which is now the template) but 1 and 3 are still really good
MI2 was made by John Woo and it is completely different in tone and feel to the entire franchise. However, I still enjoy the journey of watching this in the series, I think partly because it was filmed in Australia. It definitely has a real 90s feel to it.

Im curious, do you prefer Tom Cruise in MI or Daniel Craig's James Bond series?

I think the highs in Craig’s Bond are higher (Casino Royale and Skyfall are brilliant films all round, not just the action) but MI from 4 on in particular are just the most reliable action films going. Fallout to me reaches those Bond heights but it’s tough. Not sure I can choose. I’ll say MI cause it’s still going and Cruise started it years before Craig got near the tux.

I think that's it's only redeeming feature.

If you weren't from Australia though, it wouldn't hold the curiosity it does for us here.

each to their own, EWS and Legend are his two best films to me

Craig Bond/Ethan Hunt top 5s?

1. Casino Royale
2. Spectre
3. M:I (De Palma)
4. QoS
5. M:I-2

fully recognise others might have an entirely different personal five, which is cool.
Spectre, MI2 and QoS in any top 5 is wild stuff…

Ironically they would be in my bottom 5 for both franchise.

Thats not to put them down as movies, but how i would rate them compared to the rest of the movies of both series.
