It was astute casting of Superman in Fallout, I never thought it would work but it was a masterstroke.

Cavill was a good antagonist.

No Rogue Nation in top 5? Woah

It’s really tough with all the MIs from 4 onwards. I did a rewatch not too long ago (just before DR1) they’re all really really good and to me it sort of comes down to how you rate the stunts.I think Rogue, Fallout and DR slightly shade GP (which is still a touch cheesy) but I couldn’t fault anyone for any of them sitting there.

1- fallout
2- casino royale
3- skyfall
4- rogue nation
5- dead reckoning/MI1

But I would gladly rewatch any of them anytime

Ghost Protocol is the one where they scale the building in Dubai?

That's my fav, whichever one it is.
Tis, that is 4.

Rogue Nation 5 - the hold the breath, the aeroplane and bike chase.
Fallout 6 - HALO jump, Bathroom brawl, chase through Paris, Helicopter chase.
Dead Reckoning 7 - Abu Dhabi airport, Rome chase, Venice Chase, Bike off cliff.

4 then 7 for me. The airport scene was brilliant in Dead Reckoning.

Thats the pure beauty of these movies, you can watch them and immerse yourself totally in that world for a couple of hours.

My god how many of these movies are there
7 mission impossibles (but you could start at 4 or 5 if you just want the new “crazy Tom Cruise stunt” section).

I think Bond is 24? Craig has 5?
Casino Royale, Quantim of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre and No Time to Die.

Of those 7 MI movies, I think MI2 is the only one, where if you skipped it entirely it doesnt effect the "MI universe" whatsoever?

IIRC there is no story arcs from MI2 that carries over into future movies?

You could probably go from 1 to 4, from memory, as 4 feels like a bit of a reset.
Yes MI4 is when the franchise had like a soft reboot, however in terms of characters, Kittridge/Luther who were introduced in MI1 and Ethan's wife in MI3, so those movies have characters/stories that are very relevant to future storylines of the
franchise.

MI2 definitely worth watching for the both the Australia and the over the top nature of the action. It's John Woo, it's not poorly done, but it is ridiculous in a good high production value way. Also the Hans Zimmer score makes everything better.

If you were wanting to have some fun watching a movie for a couple hours, then there's no way it's the bottom of the MI list. If you want to pay attention and be invested in a story, then yeah, maybe.

I think by any measure at all it’s easily the last of the MIs. You could probably argue that the first one is lower on action but it has the iconic vault heist and the train scene, 2 doesn’t have any real moments (the opening credits I suppose).

I enjoy it like you but it’s not good.

I think Rush and Shine has aged horrendously as an Oscar win but that’s probably a hot takes thread.

Agreed, though I think I'd go Fiennes in The English Patient just ahead of Cruise for 1996. Both well ahead of Rush though.

For the record I enjoyed Valkyrie. I also enjoyed eyes wide shut and Vanilla Sky but they weren’t received particularly well.

Eyes Wide Shut has been pretty well reappraised and is as top tier as anything else from Kubrick, and as acclaimed as Magnolia for Cruise's best. From its Wikipedia page:

In 2012, Slant Magazine ranked the film as the second greatest of the 1990s.[134] The British Film Institute ranked the film at No. 19 on its list of "90 great films of the 1990s".[135] In 2022, IndieWire named the film the best movie of the 1990s.[136] The film was listed at number 61 in the BBC's list of the 100 greatest American films of all time.[137]

Fair. Can’t say I’ve read much about it since it came out but I remember it being VERY poorly received at the time.

Dark of the Sun (AKA The Mercenaries) (1968)

Set during the 1964 Belgian Congo civil war, it stars Rod Taylor and Jim Brown as a pair of mercenaries employed to take a train laden with troops through the jungle to retrieve the employees and (most importantly) the diamonds from a mining town to the north. The must battle the marauding Simbas and the one repellant Nazi who is part of their squad.

For its time this was an incredibly violent film and in that regard it still packs a punch. Some atrocities are hinted at - what is left to the imagination is worse. The action is near non-stop and the main set piece - when they are forced to wait for the vault timer to reset as the Simbas attack is truly nevre-wracking. Taylor is terrific and at his brawling best. Brown is also very effective and there is an excellent (and moving) Kenneth More performance as an alcoholic doctor. Cinematography, score and location shooting (it was filming the Caribbean) assist in making this one of the best action-adventure films of the period. 9/10

What's the Phillip Seymour Hoffman one? That was good from memory.

I low key love it, it's just a different thing and tone to the rest of them. A kin to Face-Off, maybe literally.
