The Substance

Its a pretty full on body horror fable which on the surface all plays pretty well and the narrative and themes are all pretty well constructed and considered.

Im not sure the final act worked for me completely. It was super gross and i think went into the comical rather than the gross, which isnt an issue in and of itself but i lost the thread a bit with it.

Demi and Margaret are great and Denis Quaid is TRULY disgusting.

WTF did I just watch Loved it though, all 3 main leads were outstanding.

Felt a bit the same about the ending but I assume it was some sort of not so subtle commentary on beauty standards in Hollywood etc, dunno I'm still in a weird type of shock at what I witnessed the last couple of hours, best movie I've seen in sometime.

The Thing (1982)

Still holds up okay although a lot of the visual effect scenes do look very dated and quite comical, but you'd expect that from a movie 42 years old. Will give the 2011 film a watch either tonight or tomorrow i think.

One of my absolute favourite movies of all time.. would be in my top 10 for sure.

John carpenter made a lot of great films, this is his best imo.

Pretty typical Shyamalan film. The premise is really interesting but the execution is lacking. It was watchable though.

I saw the TV glow. Super interesting movie about an awkward kid who is befriended by an older girl, and their shared interest in a late night TV show. A trans director looking at one aspect of the trans experience. Very weird- it felt like a David Lynch movie as I was watching it. Low budget. An excellent movie but I only need to see it once as it wasn’t upbeat. 8/10.

I watched the first 3 jackass films once more for the first time in maybe four years over Friday and Saturday nights.

Still every bit as stupid, and funny, as I remembered.

What I always liked most about these films was the extra little touches they would go to:
For example when Dave England waltzes into a hardware and plumbing store to take a shit in the middle of it on a display toilet, he goes to the trouble of taking a newspaper. When he gets a look of bemusement from the store clerk, he responds with ‘oh, I’m almost done.’ As though he is taking too long, rather than the act itself causing the problem. It was those little touches that added to the stupidity of what they were doing always made those movies funnier to me.
The roller derby disco in the back of the truck was another one.

They could have just put them all on roller skates and put them in the back of a truck. But instead they actually dressed up in 70s disco gear, Afro wigs, they TRIED to dance and start conga lines while Preston drove the truck maniacally around the car park while they bounced around the back of it.

Red Rooms - Follows the court case of a serial killer accused of torturing teenage girls and profiting via red rooms (snuff films) and a woman who has taken a keen interest in the case, showing up to trial to watch the proceedings every day. Juliette Gariépy, who plays the woman, is so disquieting in her performance that when a particular scene happens it hits you like a ton of bricks. One of the performances of the year, and one of the films of the year. It's what Longlegs wanted to be. 9/10

Apart from dragging a little in the middle I thought Red Rooms was excellent. The main character is intriguing and well performed by Gariépy. I liked that they didn't explain too much about her. The cinematography was really good.

Such a wonderful little indie flick (although A24 definitely gave them a bit of cash to work with compared to Schoenbrun's first movie).

The trans stuff is super subtle, I wouldn't have picked it up if I didn't know beforehand. Not preachy at all - just deeply personal to the filmmaker.

One of my favourites of the year for sure.
