The Substance

Its a pretty full on body horror fable which on the surface all plays pretty well and the narrative and themes are all pretty well constructed and considered.

Im not sure the final act worked for me completely. It was super gross and i think went into the comical rather than the gross, which isnt an issue in and of itself but i lost the thread a bit with it.

Demi and Margaret are great and Denis Quaid is TRULY disgusting.

WTF did I just watch🤣 Loved it though, all 3 main leads were outstanding.

Felt a bit the same about the ending but I assume it was some sort of not so subtle commentary on beauty standards in Hollywood etc, dunno I'm still in a weird type of shock at what I witnessed the last couple of hours, best movie I've seen in sometime.

In relation to The Substance, I too was bemused with the final act. I couldn't understand the set-up for the New Year's Eve show. Why were there women with bare boobs on a family-friendly NYE telecast?

Civil War

Yeh nah
Could have been an interesting concept kind of ruined by not delving into why and how
Just ended up another Hollywood shoot em up

5/10

The Thing (1982)

Still holds up okay although a lot of the visual effect scenes do look very dated and quite comical, but you'd expect that from a movie 42 years old. Will give the 2011 film a watch either tonight or tomorrow i think.

One of my absolute favourite movies of all time.. would be in my top 10 for sure.

John carpenter made a lot of great films, this is his best imo.

Anyway for movies I have watched over the past few months I would recommend:

A League of There Own

Dungeons & Dragons (2023)

The Menu

Coco

Three Billboards (2017)

The Vampire Lovers

The Holdovers

Runaway Train

I thought it was
to juxtapose with Monstro Elisasou’s horrifically sagging, withered breasts. Very male gazey, here’s some beautiful breasts for you. Followed by YOU WANT BOOBS?! Here’s some ****iNG BOOBS followed by one being vomited out on stage 😂
. I was giggling like an idiot the whole way through that scene.

I saw the TV glow. Super interesting movie about an awkward kid who is befriended by an older girl, and their shared interest in a late night TV show. A trans director looking at one aspect of the trans experience. Very weird- it felt like a David Lynch movie as I was watching it. Low budget. An excellent movie but I only need to see it once as it wasn’t upbeat. 8/10.

I watched the first 3 jackass films once more for the first time in maybe four years over Friday and Saturday nights.

Still every bit as stupid, and funny, as I remembered.

What I always liked most about these films was the extra little touches they would go to:
For example when Dave England waltzes into a hardware and plumbing store to take a shit in the middle of it on a display toilet, he goes to the trouble of taking a newspaper. When he gets a look of bemusement from the store clerk, he responds with ‘oh, I’m almost done.’ As though he is taking too long, rather than the act itself causing the problem. It was those little touches that added to the stupidity of what they were doing always made those movies funnier to me.
The roller derby disco in the back of the truck was another one.

They could have just put them all on roller skates and put them in the back of a truck. But instead they actually dressed up in 70s disco gear, Afro wigs, they TRIED to dance and start conga lines while Preston drove the truck maniacally around the car park while they bounced around the back of it.

Red Rooms - Follows the court case of a serial killer accused of torturing teenage girls and profiting via red rooms (snuff films) and a woman who has taken a keen interest in the case, showing up to trial to watch the proceedings every day. Juliette Gariépy, who plays the woman, is so disquieting in her performance that when a particular scene happens it hits you like a ton of bricks. One of the performances of the year, and one of the films of the year. It's what Longlegs wanted to be. 9/10

Apart from dragging a little in the middle I thought Red Rooms was excellent. The main character is intriguing and well performed by Gariépy. I liked that they didn't explain too much about her. The cinematography was really good.

Such a wonderful little indie flick (although A24 definitely gave them a bit of cash to work with compared to Schoenbrun's first movie).

The trans stuff is super subtle, I wouldn't have picked it up if I didn't know beforehand. Not preachy at all - just deeply personal to the filmmaker.

One of my favourites of the year for sure.

The Last Man On Earth - 1963 on Prime

Vincent Price carries this in the original telling of I Am Legend

It makes some interesting topical commentary but falls flat in the acting and scene shots

You’ve got to love this very obviously Italian filming location passing as the US - because your average American place looks like that, with crucifixes carved into the window.

Had a month off from here so got some catching up to do - apologies for the long post.

Tenet
Really quite enjoyed this one. Had heard mixed/negative reviews but it kept me engaged throughout. Bit of a mind**** but I don't mind that from time to time. Would watch again. 8/10

Insomnia

Realised this was the last outstanding Nolan film I hadn't seen. Didn't really feel like a Nolan film. Entertaining enough but never really felt like it reached any great heights. 7/10

Jack Reacher

Really not sure why I haven't seen this before - absolutely no one comes close to Tom Cruise in an action flick. I'll die on that hill. Not as polished as the Mission Impossibles but still a very enjoyable couple of hours. 7/10

The Bikeriders

This was the movie I'd been most looking forward to all year. Love the concept, love the cast. Was ultimately a bit disappointed. Don't often say it these days but it feels like it could've been a longer movie with the characters all fleshed out a bit more. Also didn't enjoy the narrative running through Kathy either. Feels like a missed opportunity. 7/10

Tin Cup

The latest watch in my Kevin Costner movie watch through. Very easy watch, not a very memorable story/movie though. Thought we were going to get the generic hero moment at the end and then watched as he hit a 12 and lost the US Open. For the originality of that (rather than the cliche), I bumped it from a 6 to a 7/10

If we're talking Aubrey Plaza and quirky romantic comedies with a sci-fi twist, then how about 'Safety Not Guaranteed'?

Good tip on Safety Not Guaranteed. :thumbsu: This is what you should aiming for when you have a budget of $750,000. A good story, committed actors and minimal special effects. 6/10

Thought I would continue the Aubrey Plaza theme and re-watch Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. There are some fun moments and the visual effects are good, but all the video game fights get very tiresome. The outcome was predictable and there was never any jeopardy for the lead character. I struggled to finish it. 4/10

Only found out this week that the Jack Ryan arch linked a few of my favourite films together. Haven't seen them in 15-20 years so going through them again.

The Hunt for Red October

Really, really enjoy this one. Did years ago, still did last night. The tension is palpable, it's well acted with a good cast. What's not to love really.

8/10

I’m still not sure I understand primer. Edge of tomorrow rules.
Tenet is great but don’t ask me to explain it.

Throw in Predestination as an absolute belter of a time travel movie.

Without spoiling I’m not sure it actually is what you say (but note that’s also how she comes back at the end). I also just don’t think it matters in the slightest that it’s not explained. In the context of the story and the themes it wouldn’t have made any difference in there was some plot contrivance or whatever to explain the mechanics of the time travel.
Beat me to it with Predestination, best of the bunch imo.

Care for some shrimp?

My son said pretty much the same as you - due to the last 20 minutes. I loved it all and was laughing out loud. Sometimes it gets so gross it's funny, like The Human Caterpillar or Eraserhead.
Last 20 mins were just a big FU to Hollywood.

I mean the whole thing was, but the last bit was just "here, suck on this you ****s".
