Contraversial opinion but Die Hard with a vengeance is a more entertaining film than the original (it’s not BETTER but it’s a shitload of fun).

2 I always found to be pretty poor by comparison
Die Hard is to Raiders of the Lost Ark
As Die Hard 2 is to Temple of Doom
As Die Hard With a Vengeance is to The Last Crusade

10 Cloverfield Lane - was expecting it to be a bit shit but surprisingly good and tense. Goodman and Winsread very good - 7.5/10

Could be. I had always thought Under Siege
Google the phrase ‘dolled up instalments’. It’s basically where they take a pre-existing script, change the name of the film and main character and make it part of a series. I don’t remember the exact order but I think Die Hard 2 was supposed to be Speed 2 (makes more sense), Speed 2 was supposed to be Under Siege 2 (fast moving train), plus more. Whoever gets in first sometimes gets the best script.

Never thought about them like that, but that comparison is spot on, the third movie is my favourite from both trilogies.

Another one that follows a similar trend is BTTF

It’s school holidays so kids films continue to dominate my viewing. Sonic the Hedgehog 3, despite never having seen the first two. Looks good, high budget, story is pretty cliche, end of the world stuff, slightly amusing at times but not funny enough for adults. 5/10 but the kids loved it.

a couple of other michael wincott movies.

closest point of reference would be an early 80's midsommar, without any horror. the creepy feeling of a cult eventually controlling someone. bordering on being an exposé. always that sense of a facade hiding something else.

and

probably the most michael wincott role ever, his first. plays a baddie, incomprehensible lines (screechy rather than gravel), and is dead before the credits. movie switched off at that point. boxing, gambling, police politics... nah.

Carry-On… surprisingly effective old school action thriller. I was expecting a Die Hard knock-off but it was better than that. Taron Egerton is good as the everyman TSA agent, Jason Bateman good as the villain and the bounce off each other well. Not to be taken too seriously but builds tension nicely. 7/10
Watched it last night.
Sorry can’t agree. Poorly put together film.
3/10

The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim

As a huge LOTR fan, just not sure what i think of this. I like the story, but i've never been a fan of this kind of animation, to be honest always thought it was pretty crap, so that automatically hurts the film for me.

5.5/10, why anime, why?

The Zone of Interest (2023)

I heard about this movie on a podcast and found it on STAN. It's about the Commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Hoss, and his family, who lived in a home attached to the camp. It doesn't show any of what's going on in the camp directly, but the noises, sites of crematorium chimneys smoking, the smells washing over occasionally, and the sometimes contact with human remains while doing leisure activities as a family are deeply disturbing. This movie won an Oscar & BAFTA for Best Foreign Film this year. I found it a genuinely fascinating film. 9/10

Been doing quite a few mostly rewatches with the kids but watched Luca from Pixar yesterday.

Just a really charming and beautifully rendered kids coming of age story. I think it’s a little slept on because it was a Covid release but it’s lovely.

I think its one of those movies that has benefited from the quality decline of modern movie making. We are so accustomed to bad movies now that good bad ones are now considered great movies. Had this come out in the 90s it would be a B grade TV movie and the critics would have savaged it if they could be bothered watching it at all.

This is so over stated it’s not even funny.

It is a B grade, made for streaming movie and absolutely no one is claiming it’s high art or even good. The 90s (and don’t for a second think I didn’t love the 90s) were littered with stuff like this. We lauded the b grade action star, they were icons (JCVD, Stallone, Seagal).

Critics haven’t been kind to carry on and nor should they. The few good reviews of it in here (mine included) all noted it’s a pretty trashy mindless action thriller.

I truly don’t get the hate this movie has generated in here.

I dont hate it. It is fun, but audience buy in is a thing and there were too many times i sat back and thought bullshit which stopped me from buying in as much as I needed to really enjoy it and thats the problem with this movie. I think if you are going to use LA, LAX and Christmas peak travel season as a back drop for your movie you need to have it at the very minimum realistic to what the conditions are like in all those areas during those times. Not to mention at least reflect airport security to being somewhat existent.

The Mountain Between Us (2017)

Im a sucker for a good ol fashioned survival film but this is not it.
It starts strong with Kate Winslet and Idris Elba sharing a charter flight that crashes in remote snowy mountains but then devolves into a clunky romance that isn't backed by the writing and editing, feels like some important scenes weren't included.

Funnily enough whilst I hated it my wife thought it was OK, I suspect she wouldn't mind "surviving" with Idris Elba, who can blame her.

1.5/5

You really don’t, absolutely no one is expecting you to “buy in”.

It’s the walking definition of a shut your brain off movie. They’ve been made since day dot and for some reason a bunch of people decided to pick the eyes out of this one.

The small audience revolt on this movie is far more baffling than the audience buy in you’re discussing.

I get the point. Its not really a shut your brain off movie. Spent the first 3 quarters of the movie waiting for this guy to act like Die Hard but it never came. A homicidal madman walks clear into the check in area at the airport and stabs someone in full view of witnesses and not a single cop? come on man. Able to drive clear across LAX at will and find parks in peak shooting range of the terminal. Again, come on. No one works underneath the airport either. Basically a ghost town. Like it spends its whole time building suspense and inferring a payoff that literally never comes until the end when the guy magically gets lucky and kills the antagonist in the stupidest way. Im sorry if I call it bullshit. You are entitled to like it, you are entitled to have your opinion but it certainly is a massive disappointment.

I just didn't like Carry On because Egerton isn't a charismatic or entertaining lead and Bateman is pretty one note as the bad guy.
It was just a beige movie and the one big action set piece felt too cgi-ish and hammy.
Rebel Ridge was a much better netflix attempt at budget 80s action flicks.

To be fair though, Egerton and Bateman had to work with a poor script with so many convenient to the story plot points I think they did the best they could.

Nobody stabs anybody in an airport in plain view of anyone. Having worked at Melbourne airport I can tell you absolutely you’re wrong about back of house areas too.

The car parking thing is just something you’re only gonna care about if you’re desperately trying to hate on the movie which is exactly my point about your “film has declined” comment.

It absolutely hasn’t declined, we had ridiculous concepts with stupid execution back then just as we have it now. This movie is basically sudden death or die hard 2 (which are both pretty trashy).

If you put it on then get shitty that it’s a dumb action suspense film with plot armour and convenience then that’s on you, not the movie.
