Part 2 of this thread is here:

If I was a member of Carlton I would be annoyed with who is running the club agreeing to these big blockbusters early every year. The club needs to win games as a priority and gain some confidence. Each and every year they agree to play these big games and it puts them behind the 8 ball. The coach should be demanding they get some lower placed sides to get off to the start they need to build their season on. Keeping your name in lights is not the priority, that comes with becoming a good side.
I agree with this sentiment but I don’t think any clubs these days would knock back prime time. Their sponsors wouldn’t be happy.

It really is pretty bog average

Pendles = Cripps
Sidey > Walsh
Moore > Weitering
Adams > Williams
Crisp = Saad
DeGoey = McKay

Then we still have Grundy, Howe, Maynard who are AA quality....

Carlton are a BOG average team who are still suffering from woeful list management decisions under SOS.
Hahah you guys are still finishing bottom 6 as well dont worry...

They won’t arrive when they play Cripps up forward - whilst Taylor Adams has near on 15-16 clearances. Cripps is a clearance player. You lost the game playing him out of position while Adams runs rampant. I would tell the coach to “don’t come Monday”. Some of the more incompetent coaching I’ve seen recently. Carlton were not only stupid enough to get rid of Rattan, but even more stupid for not picking him up second time round.

Carlton have paid not oy overseas but elite money for

Martin a HF that drifts in and out of the game

Saad a soft HB that is not great defensively and wants to play his own way

Williams a HB who is not yet proven to make the jump to midfield

All 3 players are getting paid elite money and not delivering elite performance

It was always a high risk recruiting gamble

All three in our best tonight. That’s not the problem, we still have money up our sleeves. Martin and Saad on $600k is probably $50k-$100k too much but not silly money.
williams is on big overs but he is a top 5 player for us and that’s the price of not having to trade.

Played a good richmond team and didn't disgrace themselves, went against a collingwood side who really were against the wall. I think they probably didnt respond how they should of however. I think they are a lot better then that. They showed some heart but They really needed to come back and win that

I dont think they are a bad side. They have shown some grit both losses. Unfortunately Grit doesnt really count towards premiership points. Ild be expecting them to be pretty hot against GC/Freo. Early days

Sacking Ratten was the worst decision they’ve made in 20 years.
Yeah horrific. They had a flat year which is expected, Malthouse had a couple of games and decided to cut and burn the place. Churned about 60% of the list in 2 years which hawthorn apparently did back in 2005 and teams were still trying to, even though a plethora of teams had shown you cant cut 20% of an AFL list and expect to be competitive. then gave up because just throwing a bunch of 18 year olds onto a footy field to get flogged doesnt get results. Ironically Richmond tried, Ended up cutting that shit out and riding some "dissapointing" showings and kept building to become a champion side, Rather then burning the place down and not cutting guys like Grimes/Vlaustin/Ellis/Houli/Lloyd/Butler/Miles who ended up being valuable contributors.

While I’m sure it’s fun to pile on, I’m not sure this thread even fully captures how miserable Carlton are.

since 2013 we haven’t been in the top 8 - not even for a round.

since 2013, we have only been above .500 for 1 week (in 2016 we hit 6-5 then promptly lost 10 straight).

Our best players in the last 20 years:
- Fevola - left club in disgrace
- Judd - knee injury, not even a farewell match
- Koutoufides - phenomenal run, knee injury, never the same again
- Whitnall - kicked 81 goals as a teenager. Essentially out the league at 24 with knee problems
- Waite - Carlton prime crippled by injuries; left and went to North (zero compensation) and promptly played all 25 games his first year
- Docherty - made AA, then back to back knee injuries, now a shell of what he was
- Cripps - made AA, bad run of injuries, now a shell of what he was, likely to leave
- Murphy - AFLCA mvp in 2011. Brownlow favourite in 2012 until he had his collarbone broken; repeated the injury in 2014, never the same again
- Kreuzer - crippled by injuries, never hit his peak
- Betts - forced out by Malthouse, multple AA years at Adelaide
- Curnow - breakout year, kicked 7 goals in his last game, 3 straight knee injuries and may never play again
- Gibbs - left for Adelaide in bad circumstances, completely fell apart
- Nick Stevens - broke his neck, out of the league at 28, horrible post football legacy

Which Carlton players can we even look back on fondly from that run as having had the career they deserved? Kade Simpson (zero AA, a solid journeyman hbf)? After that it’s probably Andrew Carazzo, Heath Scotland and Ed Curnow as the guys who you might remember fondly - with almost all the others’ careers coloured by either their injuries or the nature of their departure.

Really, Sam Walsh should just get out while he can...

I can’t even troll this. I’m too flabbergasted. Out of the 8 since 2013? How on earth is that possible?

Don't think they are as bad as everyone says they are, and at least they are scoring pretty well even though their backline leaks like a sieve.

Having said that, they were disappointing tonight as most people thought they wouldn't just win, but smack collingwood tonight. Would like to see how they go next week in perth against the Dockers before righting them off completely

I think there's big worries. It's not a young list any more. They're still carrying a lot of veterans and their younger players just aren't kicking on.

The frustrating thing is that I think there's a lot of tools there. Weitering, McKay, Cripps and Walsh is a good core. A good second tier too (Saad, Williams, Martin, Docherty) though I think a few of them are overpaid.

The problem is that they look to be carrying too many mediocre at best players - think current Murphy, Newnes, Plowman, Pittonet, Dow. And the likes of Casboult, Jones and Curnow seem a bad fit for where Carlton are at as a footy club.

I'd be alarmed about the development of some of their kids too. SPS and Dow looked like can't miss prospects as juniors, hell they even started their AFL careers promisingly. But SPS has badly stagnated since his first couple of seasons and Dow is genuinely nearing Polson tier of dire. Where are O'Brien or Stocker, are Carlton confident they'll be good footballers? Setterfield looks OK but I'm not seeing much to say he's an elite talent (though I guess he might yet get there - at least I'm seeing year on year improvement with him compared to SPS/Dow). Only really Walsh looks particularly good. And these are all first round picks too!

They'd be praying that Cripps is merely in a slump, rather than his body potentially being cooked. He's only 26 too!

Great, fair summary.

I think SPS and Setterfield still have a lot to give if played in the right position (hff and mid).

Dow is what he is. Will be a solid B/C grader and play plenty of games because of his raw talent, but will never be an A grade mid without a tank.

Would love to see more of Kemp, Stocker, Philp, Honey, Carroll and Durdin so we at least know what we have. Those boys all have some ticker about them which is nice. The days of banking on the likes of Cuningham, LOB, Marchbank etc. to become contributing players are over.

1) Jack Martin was one of Carlton's best players last year. Saying that a HF drifts in and out of the game is one of the laziest cliched criticisms people make about AFL half forwards. Of course they drift in and out of the game. That's the nature of the position!

2) Adam Saad is probably the most dynamic rebounding half back in the comp. He was one of Essendon's best & most consistent players from 2018 to 2020

3) Zac Williams was one of Carlton's best tonight and was one of GWS's top half dozen players over the past 5 years. The problem he always had at GWS was their glut of gun midfielders (Ward, Coniglio, Whitfield, Greene, Kelly, Shiel, Taranto, Hopper). He was versatile & silky off half back, so Cameron mostly used him in that role. But he was a star in the midfield for the Giants back in 2019 when they had a few injuries and he got a decent run in the middle.

The most overpaid dud recruit on Carlton's list is Mitch McGovern

Why didn't you mention him?

Serious question. Why does the media give this club so much credit and regularly talk about them being on the verge of jumping into a finals position? After tonight's result, they've started the last nine seasons 0-2.

Their results in the last 20 years:

2001 - 5th (semi final)
2002 - 16th (wooden spoon)
2003 - 15th
2004 - 11th
2005 - 16th (wooden spoon)
2006 - 16th (wooden spoon)

2007 - 15th
2008 - 11th
2009 - 7th (elimination final)
2010 - 8th (elimination final)

2011 - 5th (semi final)

2012 - 10th
2013 - 8th (semi final)
2014 - 13th
2015 - 18th (wooden spoon)
2016 - 14th
2017 - 16th
2018 - 18th (wooden spoon)
2019 - 16th
2020 - 11th

Three finals wins, five finals appearances (their most recent of which they didn't really earn), five wooden spoons, nine bottom 4 finishes and six mid-ladder finishes that were outside the finals.

Essendon cop a lot of grief for their lack of success in the last 20 years yet they've had double the amount of finals wins Carlton have had in the last 20 years and have received 1/5 of the amount of wooden spoons Carlton have.

I know my club has performed poorly for the last 10 years as well but the media have never really talked us up as finals chances but Carlton are constantly getting pumped up by the media.

I don't get it. What's with the media love affair for Carlton?

Same with the AFLW - most of the media had them as favourites in their pre-season predictions, yet with one round to go they aren't in the six and are relying on a heap of results to go their way to even make finals. They must be selling some real magic beans to the Vic media.

If Adams didn’t go off for a break it could’ve been a complete blow out. He seemed to be just clearing the ball at will, strolling out the center doing as he pleased. Baffling he didn’t have an opponent, and surprising Cripps was left to linger down forward. Carlton didn’t have any inside mids capable of swinging the game when it was in the balance. Really poor coaching to be fair.

Unfortunately I fell for the media narrative that the Blues might be finals contenders this year despite no evidence and I tipped them tonight.

I should have known better.
Same story every year.
Media love talking us up in February only for us to dissapoint in the season.

Dont fall for it!
