Part 2 of this thread is here:

Although this is clearly a ‘let’s bag Carlton’ thread, I must say that pot shots at their good players are well wide of the mark. Cripps, Williams, Saad, Martin and Docherty are fantastic players. People writing them off are going to look silly in future.

FWIW Paddy Dow is still pretty young, I reckon he’ll come good, just needs to find his niche. Focusing on players’ deficiencies is not the big picture here. The big picture is to find what is holding them back.

Curnow is a massive loss. Looked like being the answer at CHF but for injuries. Jones, Weitering, Cripps, Curnow, McKay is a good spine. De Koning missing in the ruck. Missing a quality experienced hard body to back up Cripps, but Walsh is top tier. Reckon they will be middle of the ladder this year, which is not all doom and gloom as they are young. IF they can hold a line and play consistent football that can set them up for the future.

Next year will be the year. They’ll get a top 3 pick for Compensation for Cripps so they can start their 8th rebuild and finally arrive!!

I tend to think that when a club sacks a coach mid-season, they should categorically state that the interim coach will not be considered for the permanent role. Nothing against Teague per se, but was there a better candidate out there? Did they even really look? Or did they just cave to fan pressure and give the job to someone on the back of a few late season sugar-hit wins?

Of course Teague could turn out to be a successful, long term coach, but if he did you can't help but think it would be good luck rather than good management.

Are they though?

They're about mid-table for age.

The side they fielded last night has a similar number of games played as the team Port fielded last week.
Ed Curnow is 31, Casboult 30, Murphy 33 are not prime player for Carlton anymore. The rest are young apart from Jones and Docherty are all under about 25, so that makes them young when players like Charlie Curnow and some other young players coming through replace them.

Their VFL side beat Richmond's pretty comfortably in a practice match, and Richmond have been very strong, so there is a good chance there are some players coming through. Kemp, Philip are injured and unknowns. It's round 2 and people want to write them off already.

Hurts me to say but I do think they are on the right track they just still have too many D graders still that make poor decisions and have poor disposal. If they can add a few more pieces at trade time they will improve further.
As an aside did anyone when looking at the fixture expect them to be anything other than 0-2?

Kornes made a great pt about Cripps this week

9th in the B&F and handball heavy

For someone who should be a top 5 player in the comp, that's not good at all.

Like Grundy, that contract could kill em.

I still have NFI why they paid the GWS guy so much either, though I'll give him some time to prove me wrong. Saad has been great.

For me a distinct lack of midfielders. Unlucky with their fwd line with injuries too.

Best club of the 20th century, worst club of the 21st.

Glad I got to see a premiership live as a kid because it’s difficult to be optimistic about witnessing another one.

I'm sure there were Sydney, Geelong, and Bulldogs fans who thought they'd never see a flag and look what happened. Think of Richmond now and where they were five years ago.

Get rid of SOS, trade out some players while they have currency and try and get some leadership into the club. I struggle to think which player at Carlton screams "follow me" on the field. I grew up watching Carlton being lead by guys like Mike Fitzpatrick and Steven Kernahan.

I hated that appointment.

Awful to get sucked into a interim coach results.

He's also said some stupid things imo over the journey too. Don't rate at all.

2015 to 2018 were sub 80% percentage years. That an aggressive rebuild. Add seven years before a flag on historical stats for all clubs.

so 2025 is the start of the window. Although finals should be in the next couple of years

All three in our best tonight. That’s not the problem, we still have money up our sleeves. Martin and Saad on $600k is probably $50k-$100k too much but not silly money.
williams is on big overs but he is a top 5 player for us and that’s the price of not having to trade.
Do you think Dixon type money for Williams is a good idea?

That's a top 5 worst contract in the league.

Seems like their players don't give a **** if they win or lose. With most of their experienced players racking up multiple spoons it kind of makes sense.

Hard to read much in to a practice match though.

All I know is that the side they're putting out there is no longer young or inexperienced.

Below is the list of players 25 and under. Weitering, McKay & Walsh are the clear quality U25 guys, plus Curnow if he ever plays again. The rest are either untried or don't look up to it. SPS a real confusing one for me, had all the traits at draft time to make it and has played quite a few games now.

You could also reference Melbourne. I’m aware that things can change quickly but have no confidence that they will.

Leadership is a huge issue. Docherty is barely worthy of a place in the side and Cripps is a shadow of his former self. Team selection is garbage, Teague is out of his depth, and we still employ John Barker.

If a team is under pressure they must love playing Carlton, because it’s a guaranteed confidence booster for guys that have been out of form for months, and a piss easy kill for a coach whose job is being questioned.

We’re probably the least respected club in the competition, and deservedly so.

Kulture.
Do what we do.
Get rid of a ridiculous pressy.
Stick an umbrella up the coach to make him more demanding.
A snifter after brekky and brunch before the noon nap.
Then take the smiles of those photogenic marquee players with lovely hair and teach them to make tackles, rather than admire their own.

Blues remind me of late 70s 80s saints, indulging in the boys who just want to get photos taken and root landing strip groupies.
