Part 2 of this thread is here:

They won’t arrive when they play Cripps up forward - whilst Taylor Adams has near on 15-16 clearances. Cripps is a clearance player. You lost the game playing him out of position while Adams runs rampant. I would tell the coach to “don’t come Monday”. Some of the more incompetent coaching I’ve seen recently. Carlton were not only stupid enough to get rid of Rattan, but even more stupid for not picking him up second time round.

agreed. should've ,ade a move on him 2nd time around but probably thought they couldn't because of how he was sacked.

On another note, why is hsi game plan so un defensive when he actually played his whole career as a defender?

Don't deserve prime time slots let alone season opening prime time slots.

As irrelevant as the Suns the last time they were playing threatening footy was 1996. 99 they Bradburied their way into a GF, with home final they didn't earn. We're talking a quarter of a century since they had any relevance.

True minnow of the AFL.

Pretty simple really
Dow (pick 3) Setters (pick5) SPS (pick 6) LOB (pick 10) and Stocker (pick 16) all drafted 5-3 years ago and not one is a good AFL level player yet. SPS is the only one who should be playing and that’s borderline atm.
Setters showed
They pay $800-$900k for a half bank flanker from GWS and want to convert him into a midfielder. Carlton recruiting is a mystery.

However there are plenty of talented players on the list. It’s time the green shoots delivered and won games of football.
Agreed. Why not just go staright for a ready made midfielder in Treloar?
Though, I'm guessing they may have made plans and arrangments with Williams long before Treloar was an option.

Played a good richmond team and didn't disgrace themselves, went against a collingwood side who really were against the wall. I think they probably didnt respond how they should of however. I think they are a lot better then that. They showed some heart but They really needed to come back and win that

I dont think they are a bad side. They have shown some grit both losses. Unfortunately Grit doesnt really count towards premiership points. Ild be expecting them to be pretty hot against GC/Freo. Early days
They've been having "brave" losses for 5 years. Well past time to deliver.

We had a very clear, 5 year recruiting strategy in place. Draft/trade for KP players first (Curnow, Weitering, McKay, Marchbank, Plowman in 15 and 16), then mids (SPS, Dow, O’Brien, Stocker, Walsh, Kennedy, Setterfield from 16-18). Initially, use gws and players squeezed from other teams to add depth, and then maybe use free agent to add some class around the edges (Saad, McGovern, Martin, Williams).

the problem is the KP guys can’t get healthy (thank god Jones and Casboult have been unexpectedly good), and the mids have just not come on at all - other than Walsh who walked in a freak, none are capable of playing AFL standard midfield footy yet. We knew this early and went all in on Shiel, then had to settle for Williams. Oh, and Docherty did his knee twice and Cripps fell apart so our two building blocks suddenly look broken.

What it adds up to is a bad team who can look good. We are a donut team - great depth in the 22 even after injuries, but the centre is empty. Our most expensive guys are playing back pocket, forward pocket, pinch hitting in the middle. But the only mid in the engine room who held his own yesterday was 20yi Walsh and the others got a bath. Hence big runs against us (patches where we just can’t get the ball) and bits almost every game where those ‘outside’ guys take over and looK amazing, and we come away saying ‘wow, if we can just sustain it for 4 quarters...’

You were 8th after you beat the Dogs in round 6 last year. Cripps even called it the biggest win of his career after the game  Then lost 3 out of 4 and never got back there.

you are correct - 8th at 3-3 -I think I missed it in the pandemic.

we still didn’t get above 50/50 last year and so it adds up to 1 week in the 8 (followed by a 1-3 run) and once above .500 (followed by 10 straight losses) since 2013

so ur under 20?
Nope, but I’ve only followed for the past 20 years or so.

i would also remark that Carlton have also been the most impatient club in the league in terms of wanting bring in one player or one coach that will see them shoot up the ladder. Thought they were taking their medicine with Bolton, but clearly the problems are above the coach’s box.

They’ll get an injury ravaged Freo at Marvel and probably get the win to start the season (and hype train) up again.

Cripps may look better as the weather worsens, and the games become a little less quick and clean.

Would say I don’t want him at Freo though, cost (at least in cap, even if he moved as a fa) will be well above return.

He’d look a lot better playing with a dominant tap ruckman, so the dirty birds with nicnat a better option.

Their sponsors would be much happier sponsoring a winner than a loser.
I'm no expert, but I don't think it works that way.

I think the eyes on screens is what they pay for. Winning or losing is largely irrelevant - except for the fact that it impacts your fixture and subsequently eyes on screens. But if you're getting primetime regardless, it simply doesn't matter.

That's why big clubs can be shit on-field yet get themselves healthy off-field within a season or two - whereas small clubs need a decade of success just to break even.

The problem is that once again they are a middle of the road team. Despite all the picks. All the rebuilds. All the new coaches.

As for Cripps being wasted forward, maybe that is a result of the speed of the game being too much for him.

When that happened to S Mitchell he moved to the CHB line with Hodge and they directed our attacks. Not sure what Cripps can do. He doesnt seem like a director.

If they lose the pitch forks will be out

What the hell is with him? I’ve got it in the past when he was shot after a long season, but it’s Round 2. He’s walking around the forward line like a 75yo. He stands up in contests obviously given his size, but bloody hell... slower than a wet week
Extremely poor mark for a bloke who stands 195cm too. Struggles to outmark shorter opponents who he regularly has 4-5 inches advantage..

Made the mistake of tipping them last night. I thought Collingwood was probably not as strong this year and surely it's time for Carlton to win a match like this.

Feel for the Blues supporters.
