Where does Marcus Bontempelli sit in the players of this era

Bonts had a few good finals games. Had 25 & 3 in the 2021 grand final even though we got annihilated.

Kicked the winning goal against GWS in a prelim, dominated Luke Hodge in 2016 as a young pup etc etc. They changed the rules because of his influence in the ruck contest after the 2016 GF.
LOL. They changed the rule because of mark blicavs, not because of bontempelli.

I reckon Bont shades Danger but not Selwood. Danger wasn’t near the match winner at Adelaide he became in his late 20’s at Geelong. Bont like Selwood was good from the word go, and both never really dropped form like Danger has recently too.
Selwood is a good comparison of Bontempelli in terms of career output.

High performer from day one, good leadershil and no fuss approach, hard at it and consistent. Both lack the pinnacle talented heights of the more explosive midfielders like ablett dangerfield and martin in their prime years thought.

Bontempelli comfortably sits with the crème de la crème of modern players. I would have him in the same bucket as Danger, Dusty, Fyfe, Judd

By careers end he might be the best of them. He is waay cleaner with ball-in-hand than Danger, Fyfe or Judd, and has been more consistent than Dusty

He doesn't have the explosive attributes of his peers, but he is so crafty he doesn't seem to need it

GAJ sits in his own unassailable category

How do you rate Bont compared to Danger?

I think Danger is the perfect “gatekeeper” to tier 1.

If you look at Dangers resume to Bonts he essentially beats him on every level.

Better in H&A and Finals
Lets be honest, dangerfields peak years are better than bonts easily.

Can’t agree there. Bont’s been so close to BOG in two grand finals and huge in many others. He turns games more than Danger can and has for much longer peak. It’s only Selwood at Geelong ahead of him.
How exactly was bont close to a norm smith in a game in a grand final you got obliterated in 2021?? He didnt get a single norm smith vote either... And was no where near petraccas 40 touches and 2 goals.

He was near it at half through the 3rd quarter he’d single-handedly kept his side in it with 3 huge set shot goals and his normal best on to that point. And retrospectively a lot a Bulldog who who have re-watched the 2016 grand final more than 20 times see that he had 100% efficientcy of disposals and set the game up creatively. He’s a huge final player. Stitched up the hawks, power, giants, lions, eagles etc with huge games.

This is a legit question.

What is Bonts signature move?

All the great players have one Dustys don’t argue, Judds/Dangers explosive power etc.

And none of this “good at everything” cop out.

Which of bonts seasons do you believe are better than dangerfields 2016/17 years??

Bont has been more consistent for longer throughout his career. Once he became elite (very quickly) he's never truly dipped.

This argument you've used here is the same as saying Matt Priddis is a better footballer than Joel Selwood because he actually won a Brownlow and then followed it up with a podium finish the following year.

Why does this matter?

Why is versatility looked down upon?

It's actually harder to be elite at everything than uber elite at one thing iparticular and great at the rest.

Danger 2016: 35 votes Brownlow (then record)

Danger 2017: 33 votes runner up (up against a new record)

So what are Bonts 2 best seasons?

I remember him getting beaten by Cripps, Wines, Neale (twice) and a handicapped Naicos in his prime.
I remember Dangerfield, Fyfe and Martin all being beaten by Tom Mitchell in a Brownlow.

They must all be hacks...

How is he more consistent than a midfielder who has equalled the AA record with 8?? That is as consistent as it gets including a brownlow.

Il ask again. Which season of bonts is better??

He is a rung below dangerfield martin

Dangerfields prime is so underrated. People seemed to hate him for

a) leaving Adelaide
And
B) showing some personality in the media

Bontempelli has been a top 10 player for 6 or so years but Dangerfield in his best years was as good as any player I’ve seen in the last 20 years not named GAJ. Bloke averaged 30 and kicked 45 goals in 2017.

I’d say Bontempelli needs to have a season where he is indisputably the best player in the league before he should be mentioned in the top 10

Even since 2010 if we include only midfielders he’s probably below Fyfe, Danger, Martin, and Pendlebury
