Where does Marcus Bontempelli sit in the players of this era

Interestingly, the Cats were broke circa 2000-1. Things were desperate. Only Costa saved the club.

Then a series of governments federal, state and local, decided to gift the club untold millions from the public purse to build a fortress. Welfare, hey?

You are either 16 or have a very poor memory.

...or you're just another Geelong Crazy.

I worked in Geelong for a fair while. There's plenty of crazies down there.

Plenty of entitled knobs, too. Many more than anywhere else I've ever been.

When you've got time (you'll need plenty) feel free to ask me about the Divine Right all Geelong people have.
Nobody pays for their ovals. How much do adelaide or west coast pay for their home grounds??? What about sydney??

We dont get any money in welfare from the AFL, the bulldogs received over 100 million dollars in handout payments from the AFL from 2012-2022.

Never watched Bailey Smith or Cody Weightman play football then I take it?

Bailey Smith is also the most followed footballer on social media. Not bad for being at a welfare club!
(Also, a 'welfare club' who was one of only a handful who could have financially survived an entire Covid year shut-down).

Danger cops heat because he went from being everybody's favourite opposition footballer at Adelaide to a sook who constantly plays for free kicks as soon as went to Geelong. The culture of the club changed the way he went about his football. Didn't distrupt his talent, but he added unnecessary and unbecoming extras.
Right here summarised is just hatred of a damaging gun player at a big club compared to a vanilla all rounder like bont at a welfare club that has taken over 100 million from the AFL across a decade.

Simply a non threatening nothing club which is why he is admired.

People on both sides of this s**t fight should grow up and not ruin another thread. The generalisations towards a supporter base because of one poster's unique claims (shared by no other I've come across) are unnecessary. Poor form by GC for starting that too.

Bontempelli is tracking to be the second best midfielder (behind Ablett Junior) for players debuting this century. He could easily surpass Ablett for total Brownlow/Coaches votes but the yearly vote tallies for top midfielders in his generation (especially the last half a dozen years) have been inflated.

This year or next is probably his last in his prime. It drops off quick. No finals awards yet unfortunately.

Peak Bont probably shades Pendlebury, more aspects to his game, key forward? But Pendles is THE most consistent, durable player, probably of all time? He’s hitting the 400 mark as an upper echelon player, unheard of in the 400 camp, who were all champions and still deserved their place in their teams but not Pendles level at this point in his career. Although Bont is similar in his consistency, remember he won the best and fairest in the premiership year in 2016 and has won 4 more, he has many years to catch Pendlebury.

I don’t get this Pendlebury being THE most consistent thing.

He’s only got 6 AAs, 5 B&Fs, no Brownlow and no MVP.

That doesn’t beat GAJ, Judd, Buddy, Danger, Ricciuto, Robert Harvey, Buckley, Pavlich, Roos West etc

If it’s about games played you’ve got all those 400+ gamers KB, Boomer, Fletcher, Burgoyne.

I’m starting to think Pendlebury may be the most overrated player of all time. Legit.

Peak Bont does more than shade Pendles. I love our number 10 but Bont at his best rips whole games apart.

Pendles has been super consistent, only 2 or 3 down years, and to his credit has improved various parts of his game even in the last season or two. Escaped the eye of idiot commentators for a while but don't they froth about him now?

He was not a great captain when he started (a lot like like Bucks I think): he set a good example at first but then he studied and worked and developed on communication and mentoring and became a very good captain (better than Bucks who was good by the end). Even stepping down his leadership is a continued attribute, he in no way jams Moore's signal, they provide great support to all the boys.

I feel Bont is still growing as a leader (pretty good now, but not the best), be terrifying if he does even more to lift his side in that way.

Bont needs a special finals series to be in the top tier imo. He’s done everything else.

But agree he is better than Pendles by a fair bit.

Whitten is the best self publicist to have played the game. He was not a primo player.

Gary Dempsey is probably the best Dog I’ve seen play. Bont would be somewhere in the top five.
Not sure what your issue with Whitten is but he was definitely a great player.

Inducted into Sport of Australia Hall of Fame
Captain of the Team of the Century
First Inductee into the AFL Hall of Fame
First Legend also.

It seems that a few people rated him.

Have many issues with Whitten. RDB was twice the footballer and was called Mr Football. This really got up Whittens nose. He campaigned vociferously as you’d expect of a self publicist

Your mob has had umpteen fine players, many of whom should be rated ahead of him. The Bont is obviously miles ahead of him

You are entitled to your opinion even when it is not supported by any fact.

Barrassi was a great football mind but even he considered Whitten the best player of their era. It is quoted in the Sport Hall of Fame article.

So NO.
Barrassi was not considered a better footballer by any published authority.

They named Whitten Captain of the Team of the Century.

Troll or moron, just trying to work out which.

Maybe a bit of both.

RDB was actually on the humble side. As for published authority that is a joke. Fwiw, Team of the Century was pretty funny. Lofts and Southby in my time relegated SOS to third best Blues’ full back.

Players like wee Georgie, Box, Charlie, Schultz and Dempsey, let alone Templeman, Quinlan and umpteen AFL era Dogs inc the great Hawk were both wonderful players and people.

Danger cops heat because he came from a club most are indifferent to due to their lack of ultimate success to a club that that most wanted to fall down the ladder as they were sick of them winning. Plus his game went to another level at Geelong.

No just 1 good finals series.

He needs to consult Bobby Hill and Sam Walsh for some advice.

After that he will be on Dangers level.

If he does it again he’s tier 1

Simple formula

Bonts had a few good finals games. Had 25 & 3 in the 2021 grand final even though we got annihilated.

Kicked the winning goal against GWS in a prelim, dominated Luke Hodge in 2016 as a young pup etc etc. They changed the rules because of his influence in the ruck contest after the 2016 GF.

How do you rate Bont compared to Danger?

I think Danger is the perfect “gatekeeper” to tier 1.

If you look at Dangers resume to Bonts he essentially beats him on every level.

Better in H&A and Finals

I reckon Bont shades Danger but not Selwood. Danger wasn’t near the match winner at Adelaide he became in his late 20’s at Geelong. Bont like Selwood was good from the word go, and both never really dropped form like Danger has recently too.

Yeah I'm a bit confused by that narrative in this thread.

Was actually the Bulldogs highest rated player by Champion Data in the premiership win.

Was easily leading the Norm Smith half way through the third quarter in 2021 before his side capitulated around him.

Had two massive moments in the 2016 Semi and preliminary finals as well, as you've mentioned.
