Where does Marcus Bontempelli sit in the players of this era

Footy is a two way game and Danger mostly excelled one way. Bont had 170 tackles last year, leads all midfielders in 1%ers, second in the league in smothers, leads the league in contested knock ons, etc. Does all the dirty defensive work and unheralded stuff while also being an elite ball winner, offensive weapon and an exquisite kick of the footy. Casual fans won’t notice that stuff though, they’ll just gravitate to whoever gets the 30 disposals.

Danger just never did the breadth of work that Bont does on both sides of the ball (e.g. Bont’s siting at 5.2 tackles a game for his entire career, a number Danger only managed in a season twice in 16 years) and his kicking simply wasn’t in the same league.

To each their own though, Danger was obviously a fantastic ball winner and great player too, in his prime.

Bont has been more consistent for longer throughout his career. Once he became elite (very quickly) he's never truly dipped.

This argument you've used here is the same as saying Matt Priddis is a better footballer than Joel Selwood because he actually won a Brownlow and then followed it up with a podium finish the following year.

Problem with that is that Danger has 8 AAs compared to 5 lol

Signature move lol wtf? This isn’t the WWE.

Exactly he’s vanilla like many good footballers.

Nothing separates him from the pack. Hence why he isn’t tier 1.

I’m not being unreasonable. The best of the best in any competition have something that stands out that’s makes them so good.

Even Pendlebury (who I wouldn’t even put in tier 1 and I think is boring af to watch) has his signature “evasiveness”

I think you're being completely unreasonable. Suggesting a player needs a point of difference to be a tier one player is ludicrous.

What was Gary Ablett Juniors "signature" move?

Dangerfields prime is so underrated. People seemed to hate him for

a) leaving Adelaide
And
B) showing some personality in the media

Bontempelli has been a top 10 player for 6 or so years but Dangerfield in his best years was as good as any player I’ve seen in the last 20 years not named GAJ. Bloke averaged 30 and kicked 45 goals in 2017.

I’d say Bontempelli needs to have a season where he is indisputably the best player in the league before he should be mentioned in the top 10

Even since 2010 if we include only midfielders he’s probably below Fyfe, Danger, Martin, and Pendlebury
Bingo. He is not as good as dangerfield martin etc

Did you actually watch ablett?? He is the slippery most evasive player i have seen, had also a burst of excelleration out of packs and an elite medium forward.

Up there with the top ten all time

Tackles and 1 percenters??

Sure, bont can have that. Dangerfield pretty much takes the cake in every other area across his prime compared to bontempelli.

Rubbish. Ablett did everything better than everyone but did not have one specific "signature move". I can't believe that's even a thing that supporters think about, what an utter nonsense.

several posters got upset and had swipes at me... Then they go on to claim some of the dumbest laughable things you will hear such as “ close to a norm smith medal” in a grand final he got zero norm smith votes in.

Then topping it with saying a player lacks consistency who has an all time record 8AA’s.

I guess when your iq is that low yu produce ripping posts and logic like this, anything rational will make you angry

So garry ablett didnt have elite evasiveness and wasnt an explosive player?? You need to lay off the drugs a little
Where did I say he wasn't evasive or explosive? I'm saying it wasn't a signature move. If you are saying that's what put him into the tier one of the competition (which is what this "signature move" conversation is based on) then you are doing him a great disservice.

After this conversation I'm actually going to have to lay in to the drugs a little.

I didnt say you need a signature move, i am just highlighting a few of abletta elite traits he was 10/10 at. He had a few others also.

Ablett sits on a whole different shelf to bont mate

You responded to a conversation about a player needing to have a signature move, or they are considered vanilla - perhaps do a bit of light reading before involving yourself in a conversation mate?

I also don't hold any issues saying Ablett is better than Bont. Ablett is the best player I've ever seen.

I assume signature move he simply means something a player is elite at that makes him stand out. I simply answered that and gave a few things.
