Where is Lennon? Having Surgery - Out for 6

Anyone reckon he could play on the wing? He's not incredibly quick but his ability to move the ball in transition could be a huge weapon. Can also take big lead up marks on the centre wing and he would deliver it to our forwards nicely with that raking shoe.

Towards the end of u18s he played a lot in the midfield and racked em up so he wouldn't have trouble finding the footy.

dont think he has the tank

Its where he should play in time. He really should just be folllowing lids honestly. He can play anywhere lennon has that potential.

Who and Where is Ben Lennon?
by Don Juan
Ben Lennon, Richmond's supposed 2013 first round draft pick has suddenly disappeared from Richmond football club, with both players and official denying his existence.

An anonymous Supercoach user brought the matter to The Daily Dribble forward when inquiring both where his Richmond forward occuping a bench spot had gone and why exactly he picked Lennon for his team in the first place.

When questioned, Richmond's media team told us that there was no Ben Lennon, to stop bringing up Ben Lennon, and told us that their first pick in the 2013 draft was Kane Lambert, currently playing half-forward for the club.

Lambert was unavailable for questioning, but teammate Adam Marcon was cornered leaving Punt road.
"Look, I've never heard of no Brent Lenin, I did not convince Kane to get rid of him, I did not whisper in his ear that it would provide the perfect opportunity to lock himself into the Richmond forward line, and I did not spend a night digging a hole, never realizing how heavy a body is and how much the stench is overpowering to hide all evidence of the crime, but only to break down a week later and admit to Dimma it was you who did it. Now please don't ask me about Brad Lemon again."

Marcon then sprinted away, before knocking Ben Griffiths over and concussing him yet again.

FWIW, he's a forward and an All-Australian one at under-18 level and where 17 other teams, if he was on their list, would play him. His marking ability is arguably his best asset and he should be clunking eight-nine marks up forward. He's the Richmond prototype - a classic example of a player who loses his way a bit being shoved from forward to back to wing to back to forward. Footballers are human, they like stability.
The press release from the club quoting Dan Richardson was comical:
"Ben is a talented young player, who we rate very highly."
Yes, he is a talented player ... but doubts the club rates him highly. Yes, he hasn't much continuity in his football this season, but his treatment prior was poor.

Very entertaining :)

So the club don't rate him, yet they not only resign him, they fight the blues to keep him?

Yet they don't rate him?

Seriously?

Thats him done for the year. No point rushing him back. Give him a month or two of rest then train hard over the summer.

Would prefer to get him back onto the park asap and get games into him. Even getting regular game time into his body and legs at VFL for a month leading into a solid pre-season would be a huge plus.

Wrapping footballers in cotton wool is BS IMO (unless it's Deledio in pre-season).

They've barely played him - and when they do they throw his down back.
Lennon won a Rising Star nomination in round 22 for a great performance v Essendon. Nine marks in atrocious conditions. Two weeks later he's dumped like a bad habit for two not-even half fit blokes for a final??? Ring bells.
I sometimes think our football dept. simply don't know what to do with what they have.
The club actually fought off advances for McBean too - he;s further away from getting a game than at any point in his career.

They have put him down back at stages purely because of injury. Its isn't a death sentence. I would also argue he has he has parts of his game he needs to get better at, and that if he didn't get sick during preseason he would be playing. The simple fact is there is only 22 spots.

There is no mystery, no conspiracy.
He's been a disappointing player early on in his career who's defensive side to his game up forward was not even close to up to scratch.
Got plenty of talent obviously but this year is having no luck with illness and concussions.
The notion that 17 other clubs would have been playing him is ridiculous.

it would be interesting, to see how many players other teams they have in their best 22 that supporters think wouldn't get a game elsewhere.. and vice versa, who never gets a game that they think "would get one anywhere"

but no, apparently it only happens at richmond

look at Miles, GWS didn't rate him, yet he is a star here. i'm sure we do have players that would thrive at another club in our reserves, but as do every team.

Think Miles was unlucky to be where he was among so many young stars.
Even now he'd struggle to get a game there I think which shows the gulf between the two lists such is the advantage they had at the draft table.

HERE'S a question? How many Richmond players in recent times have made their way onto another AFL list via trade? That we have actually traded? We are either no good at it, or we don't have tradeable commodities!
Ditto delisted guys who ended up elsewhere.
Sweet precious all.
Like we have traded for plenty, who have we traded out?
it seems our players are not sought after!

Think your overstating this, yes they had players that kept him out then. But right now Miles would be getting a game at GWS. Greene is a spud and is getting a game. Hopper while he will probably end up a star wouldn't be playing ahead of miles either would Steele. Miles competition back then was Treloar, Adams and Tyson.

Not going to be negative on this thread. I will say one thing though i was highly critical of us taking Ben mainly because i did not think he met our major needs.
All i can say is. We need to play our kids and see what they can offer. It is a shame Ben has suffered another set back.
We are in desperate need of a classy strong marking medium sized forward who could in time become a part of midfield rotations. That is how i see Lennon.

Stevie J was probably a similar type at the start of his career. Stevie not a real quick player and not as good in the air but a bit more pizzaz if you like.

I think Lennon Has footy smarts and has shown he can go into the midfield and has real good skills to go with his marking. There is a flip side, Motor, Pace, Hardness are issues. With a decent run and good coaching there is no reason why he can not over come these.
Yes it is a shame we need to seeplay and see what the younger blokes can do rather than continuing to play a heap of players who have shown time after time that can not take us to the lofty heights we all aspire to.

He'd be right on the edge I reckon.
Have a look at some of the players they drop some weeks.
Embarrassment of riches.

Clearly Hardwick does not rate him despite the words issued by the club. Hardwick has had plenty of opportunities to back Lennon by playing him but he still has no idea what position to play him in. I wonder why Lennon has not been given similar opportunities as Lloyd, CEllis, Rioli, Menadue to name a few. Lennon could be an elite player if given backing and support, but clearly this will not happen whilst Hardwick is coaching.

why would the club keep a kid a coach has no intention of playing?

this is perhaps the most ridiculous theory every vomited up on this board

Totally agree, great post. Lennon has talent but doesn't fit Hardwick's mould of a being a hard inside tacking machine with low skills. If Lennon was given opportunity like Hardwick's favourites, he would have played 40 games by now and cemented his spot in the team.

Like McDonough?

Tackling machines?
Gee we don't seem to have many of these anyway.

Problem being, like Lennon, McDonough was an All-Australian half forward at under-18 level.
The only time he was given anything like an extended run in the team was the start of 2014, where - of course - he was played as a half back flanker.
Yes, you can question whether he had the talent to succeed, which a pick 42 in the draft should, but do we give these guys the best chance by trying to reinvent them all into something they ain't.
Lennon has played two games this year - one largely at half back in which he won praise, then pushed forward the next week in a poor team performance v West Coast when we were collectively horrible. Guess who got dropped. He got disposals and eight marks that night and a certain number 29 had five disposals and one mark???????? The double standrad is incredible!
