Which club had the best drafts?

Gotta love these threads - No matter how they're phrased, and no matter how people respond, it's always the same conversation:

Thread starter: "Which team took the most highly ranked players from the BigFooty Phantom Draft, and other high-profile phantom drafts from BigFooty?"

Fan of Team X: "All of the players that Team X drafted were in the Top 40 in the BFPD, so I reckon they did the best."

Fan of Team Y: "I don't know about that - I mean, our recruiting manager said that we got all 10 of our top 10 prospects, so unless our recruiting manager lied, which I doubt, then surely we did the best."

Fan of Team Q: "Well I heard a whisper that Team Y was furious that Team Q stole a couple of their prospects, and that the guy they took in the first round wasn't even rated in our Top 200".

Fan of Team Z: "Guys, it's way too early to tell, why don't we wait and see."

Other fans: "Shut up - You're just pissed because Team Z drafted as though they'd never even SEEN the BFPD, and they missed out on all the good players that had slid into the back end of the draft."

Fan of Team Z: "Don't you think that this is the same as every other year - That the players who slid out of the main draft will probably not go that well, given that the reason for their perceived 'slide' in spite of good underage/SANFL/VFL/other experience is that they have at least one serious flaw about them?"

All other fans: SHUT UP!

Ah... Good stuff... Out of curiosity, if we go back over draft threads throughout the years, how many times will we see people accurately saying who did the best in the days immediately following the drafts?

I bet people rated Carlton's 2000 draft as one of the best, given their three first round picks - Luke Livingston, Trent Sporn and Simon Wiggins - Some of their later rounds picks like Blake Campbell, Sean O'Keefe and Callan Beasy, and their gun rookie selections of Ian Prendergast, Tim Fleming and Jim Plunkett.

Yep - I'd say people definitely thought they did better than Port Adelaide, who just picked up two younger brothers, riding on coat-tails, in Shaun Burgoyne and Kane Cornes (both with much lower picks than Carlton had), and some unknown in the later rounds, Domenic Cassisi.

Likewise, I'd say after the 2002 draft, everyone would have thought Carlton got nothing, given their lack of decent picks, and that Western did well with the early selection of Tim Walsh to go with Cameron Faulkner, Brad Murphy, Scott Bassett, whereas all Carlton ended up with were late picks like Kade Simpson and Brad Fisher.

To be honest, not overally happy with Essendon's drafting over the 3 drafts. Obviously only reputations to go on, but in a supposed strong draft, we got Hurley who we'd, gee better be good, he's our only really really promising one. Zaharahis well hopefully should be alright, but looks an o.k. type player just from highlights. The others, rookies we didn't get anyone rated too highly, and we grabbed Still and Slattery who were quite unlikely to get picked up. This may sound like i haven't seen a lot of them, and you're right, i'm completly basing this on their reputations, but going by reputations, we haven't done too well at all.
Having said that, come on bombers, Hurley, Zaharahis, Still, Slattery, Skipworth, German, Kleme are all absolute gems, all future guns:thumbsu:

x2

Crowley would be in the top handful of taggers in the AFL. Not only that he can go forward and kick a goal and makes his opponent accountable.

crowley is exactly that - just a tagger. a plodding type with ok endurance, below average skills. if you're happy for one of your 3 top midfielders being a tagger than fine (assuming hasleby and palmer other 2) - however any decent successful club has more strings to their midfield bow. i personally don't think de boer is any gun but he has more potential than crowley for mine.

i'm still astonished freo didn't take rich or hartlett given they actually look thin in genuine midfielders past hasleby and palmer. hill looks more a wing/flank type adding to guys like headland/ibbotson/mundy/mayne also falling into this category.

i would have thought the priorities of any club are key positions, rucks, inside midfielders leaving outside wing/flankers the lowest priority.

Freo certainly apper to have taken the biggest names/most talked about players in the rookie draft, which makes you wonder if they even have recuiter of if they just go of what emma quale and people on big footy say.....time will tell.

Let me get this straight.

Freo drafts Hill and the reaction is...
"i'm still astonished freo didn't take rich or hartlett "

Freo drafts their young blokes in the rookie draft and we get this...
"Freo certainly apper to have taken the biggest names/most talked about players in the rookie draft, which makes you wonder if they even have recuiter of if they just go of what emma quale and people on big footy say"

Appears to be a lose-lose. Apparently we should have picked the guy that everyone thought we should of or when we do people question our recruiting dept. So which is it?

lol...

I am a bit bias but i believe the dockers picked up some great rookies and some solid players in the ND as well. I believe we were on par with WC as the most impressive across all drafts. Other teams such as Bris, Rich and Coll did well IMO aswell.

Melb did well but how could they not, Port are trying to do what they did just b4 the won the flag, Collingwood not sure because they seem to pick up players other dont rate but come good.

Freo and Port will get some good ones and bad one as they had so many picks.

Hope Freo comes good and wins a flag as long as they dont beat the Tiges

port adelaide i think unfortunatly..

i personally thought for the selections that freo had, they didnt draft as well as they could of..

Well 1st 2 picks in Hartlett and Trengove was very good, Then add Banner, Jarrad Redden, Dawson and Deveport that did a Hell of a Draft Class

Fair cop. I think you'll find we did very much the opposite this year though. If most of Yarran, Warnock, Robinson, O'Keeffe and Garlett don't play 100+ i'll be surprised. VERY happy with our picks. :thumbsu:

I think Port, Richmond, Fremantle and West Coast drafted the best, and the Crows and the Saints traded poorly, but I guess only time will tell

Pretty fair comment.

We just have a genius recruiter. :D

In Hine we trust. :thumbsu:

Stupid thread. It really is when you think about it, all it is is stating which club drafted the most number of popular players.

We wont know for a minimum 3 years who drafted the best.

Hmm i dont know where you get that logic.
Adelaide got Davis and Mckernan rated by most 1st rounders
Lee who was a second rounder according to Burgo
Sloane who many BF ppl wanted
And Young who fills our list needs as a tall utility.

Fremantle should have done great with all the early picks they had, but time will tell and its naive to say one club did better then another, like a previous post said you have to wait 3 years at least, before you can pass judgement

This was the draft that many said is arguably the best ever. Not necessarily for top 5 but depth as well.

Not one club or supporter would have walked away unhappy.

How can anyone rate their teams the best at this stage?
