I am talking about clubs that haven't won a a flag for 30 years or longer, that lenght of time counts as a drought, esp in the modern era. So it's Melbourne, Richmond, St.Kilda and the Bulldogs and I suppose you can throw in Fremantle.

Frankly Richmond is best placed in terms of youth and structure for long term success, the Bulldogs and Saints finals runs are shot and will be bottom 6 material for the immediate future, and Melbourne just have not got enough top shelf talent coming through. Freo may have 3 years left for a challenge, before Pavlich/Sandilands retire.

The sad reality is that I can see the Suns and probably the Giants win flags before any of these clubs.

Melbourne.
Our list is as young as the Suns'. Seriously. Top-shelf talent can't be judged when over half the list is 23 or less.

If you can throw in Freo you can throw in Carlton. I don't believe that Juddy will ever fly a blue flag.

Melbourne don't have the top-end talent coming through?

We'll have to wait and see how they develop.

With Scully we would have been equal with Richmond for top-end talent, so I don't think there is that much of a gap.

Saints & Dogs appear to have missed their opportunities and are on their way down before having another crack.

I would obviously love Melbourne to get there (sooner rather than later) but would also love the Tiges to grab one. The sad reality is the AFL will do everything in their power to get flags to the Suns & GWS even if this is at the expense of clubs like Melbourne & Richmond. If these new franchises are gifted flags before I can see the Demons get one (or at least Richmond can have a crack) I don't know if I would keep following as fanatically as I do.

Just in order to get facts straight (I'm not trying to start a 'who has the most young talent, blah' fight)... this is who I see as potential top shelf talents from Melbourne and Richmond.

Richmond;
- Reiwoldt, Deledio, Martin, Cotchin, Vickery

Melbourne;
- Watts, Trengove, Frawley, Sylvia (and guys like Blease, Gysberts and Grimes could well be pushing for this kind of status, in terms of potential and opposition supporter acknowledgment, when they start putting full seasons together)

Not enough top shelf talent? According to whom?

We were the youngest side behind GC in '11, remember that. Richmonds 2011 was the same as our 2010 for me

Excluding Freo, I think that the Saints could possibly make one last-ditch tilt. Beyond that, I'd go with Richmond. The Martin/Cotchin combo will be lethal.

Richmond have a very good top 5 but after that there isn't much to get excited about. Melbourne is better placed for mine a lot more potential and depth on that list than there is on Richmond's.

I think Melbourne and Richmond are the most likely out of the 4 Melbournian clubs to reach the ultimate goal first. And I dearly hope that is before GCS and GWS get up and about, the concessions they received were criminal imo.

In regards to talent I believe Richmond have a better top 5 but Melbourne a better top 10.

Freo are primed and have a couple of years to snag one. Melbourne and Richmond are roughly equal in development and a couple of years away yet, all going well. Dogs are in a state of transition and St.Kilda has gone to the back of the queue (IMO).

This. Richmonds top players are way better than ours imo, but a lot of rubbish still on their list. Melbourne have a much greater pool of talent but who knows how it will end up. Freo have the best young list though just need more luck with injury.

Edit: mayhem, your a douche bag.

I wouldn't say that will always be the case though.

I think three of their top-end players are 'peaking'

Reiwoldt and Deledio, obviously, and Cotchin is beginning to peak.

Watts, Grimes, Gysberts, Trengove and Sylvia haven't begun peaking yet (well, Sylvia may have... but I really hope he can become the player should be)

we have got plenty of top shelf stuff and there is a lot more coming through in the next 2-3 years. $cummy's 2 1st rnd picks, another reasonably early pick this year and Jack Viney. We will win a flag in the next 3-5 years.
