Which one did you enjoy more, Im presuming no one here was around for the 09 18 and 33 flags.

The first for me was so exciting, this one was more satisfying because of the riddiculous crap i heard pre match about the hawks so called superior talent and era they are in, give me a break. I think this one is better to watch, but maybe its all just fresh.

2012 just because we were underdogs, always underrated and overcame the GF injuries. Also I think our playing style is exciting, and there's so many great stories surrounding the 2012 team.

Actually being at this one, with awesome mates, and then celebrating into this morning, makes this one more memorable.

yeah that helps for me, celebrating actually being there, seeing the players, singing the song, hugging strangers.

For me 2012.

I shared the moment with my dad unlike 2005 and it just felt more satisfying locking up the game with a goal rather than a game saving, defensive mark. Malceski's celebration was just awesome too.

The fact it had more goal highlights helped a bit too.The celebration after the game seemed a lot more passionate in the coaches box, among the fans, among the officials. Bob Skilton handed over the cup.

This one meant more to me than the 2005 one. Sure, we broke the drought.... but this one just seemed more legit. It was truly the icing on the cake.

Barry Hall lifted the cup in 2005 which left me slightly bitter after he bagged out the club. This time it was lifted by someone who I felt deserves it and will never ever speak badly of this club as he loves it too much.

Heaps of people wrote off the 2005 Premiership as a fluke and a one-off. I truly believe we really earned this one and nobody will argue against it.

A truly, truly gutsy win. Against all odds... we got em'. We stuck it up everyone.

Hard to split 05 had plenty of drama (Nick Davis, losing the first final and getting to the GF hard way).

Ending the drought in 05 was awesome, but the circumstances of the 2012 probably put it ahead....breaking our 2 hoodoo teams in the earlier finals, breaking our MCG hoodoo (against a Vic home team also) plus a few players overcoming injuries to play huge roles. Plus we were underdogs, where as in 05 it was a even money ball game.
2012 was probably the slighly better game of the 2 also.

2005 was special, but being younger I probably didn't truely appreciate how hard they had to work that game, I was over the moon, but it didn't hit me like this one has. I was just an emotional wreck until Malceski snapped that goal. Hawthorn were the favourites, the 'unbeatable' team some liked to call them and Sydney came along and pulled off the best performance I have ever seen from this team. Never seen a team tackle like the way Sydney did, you know your a hard working side when you make 110 tackles. I really hope this ignites a rivalry between the two clubs in the same way those finals did with the Eagles.

Nick Davis was great and all in the lead-up to the Grannie...

But goddamnit...

Two bogey teams beaten decisively in the finals and breaking the so-called 'MCG hoodoo' is extremely difficult to top.

I would have been satisfied with just making the Grand Final or even simply beating the pies.

This is my all-time greatest swans moment. Nobody can speak badly about us anymore.

This premiership pretty much fulfilled everything on my swans wish-list.

Beat the crows - check
Beat the pies in an extremely important game, breaking the streak and they can't call us their bitches anymore - check
Winning on the MCG - check
Norm Smith medallist finally - check
Close finish - check
Bob Skilton handing over the cup - check
Gutsiest win ever seen - check
Beating red-hot favourites - check
Throwing egg on the faces of all the doubters - check
Our coach showing a little emotion at the end - check
Being ACTUALLY able to see the swans sing the song - check
Adequate coverage of after-game events - check

I had always wanted to see Malceski kick the winning goal too after the 2006 Grannie. Was so disappointed when his snap in the final quarter didn't amount to anything and the eagles snuck home.

Wanted to see Richards, Malceski and McVeigh win one after the disappointment of 2006.

The only downside to all of this was McGlynn... similar to Maxwell in 2005. Though the good news is he can have another crack next year. :D

Another positive about this year: This time the dirty South Melbourne Hellas weren't around to stop us celebrating at Lakeside Oval.

Unrelated note: I find it so awesome that they have Lakeside Stadium in Sydney and Lakeside Oval in South Melbourne.

I reckon it already has.

Apparently Sewell and Lewis from the Hawks vowed to never lose to the swans again. :D

2005 we done it the hard way having to play 4 finals. We were seconds away from going out in straight sets and then we won our first final at the MCG in who knows how long against the Saints who were highly fancied. The last qtr was sensational. The Grand Final itself was like a relief and a huge weight off the clubs shoulders after waiting so long for a Premiership

2012 we managed to shake off 3 hoodoos. Beating Adelaide at Football Park, beating the Pies who we hadn't beaten in ages and then winning the GF at the MCG against the unbackable Hawks. No one can say we didn't earn it when you look back at the injuries we suffered on the day. Still pinching myself.

I'm tempted to leave it a few days to let the dust settle a bit, but i reckon as far as a spectacle 2012 finals series was better. Only because for as memorable as the semi in 2005 was, the first 3 qtrs it was one of the worst games i'd seen, whilst the GF itself was so-so despite being close.

I didn't get to go to 2005 and managed to go this year. In some ways, a flag is a flag is a flag - for the Red and White to be premiers that's kind of all that matters.

Still, we're having this conversation now... 2005 was the drought breaker, which was amazing for all the fans, particularly the old Souths guys. After Saturday, I was inclined to think that 2005 would be more important - but I'm shifting now - 2012 showed a maturity in the club, from the top down - that they could have sustained success both on and off the field and lead the league in their approach to the game (particularly in the list management side of things). We had one year out of the top eight, which the club took great advantage of - Mummy, Kennedy, McGlynn, Jetta, Reid (and Rohan, TDL and Seaby) all coming in that year. They saw an opportunity with Jolly (and to a lesser extent, Hall) leaving and with the two new clubs coming in took a punt and it's all come up brilliantly with the class of 05 and 06 mixing with the newer bloods.

So for me, 2012 showed that our club truly belongs up there with all the big clubs. It was also refreshing that our team could play such hard, fearless football but also produce some of the great highlights of the season with flashes of speed, skill and daring. I also think that the current gameplan was an inspired step by Longmire and his team, who read the way the competition was being played, looked at our list and concocted a new and effective strategy.

All in all, it's a toss up - but I'm leaning to 2012 now!

what was Maxfield injured with in the 05 GF?
Retired mid year from memory with an injury. He was one of my favourite players from 96 onwards and played a huge part in the success the club had that year. And this year as well probably, still involved at the club as a runner.

He's the forgotton person in all of this imo. Roos, Longmire, Kirk etc. get most of the credit for the culture the club has built but as an outsider looking in, I think Maxfield has been massive for the club and in a fairly unsung manner.
