Roberts and Gourdis for mine.

Why?

Polly has had a fair go at senior level (before his head injury) and never quite looked up to it. He was a little too slow as a backman and too poor a kick for goal to be a forward.

Roberts and Gourdis are more likely to be in our next premiership team than Polly. So they should play in a team consistently to become familiar with their teammates movements and the overall game plan.

Gourdis can also provide X factor if switched to play forward. Opposition backs would find him a handful with his combination of size and pace.

Just my 2 cents worth.

i chose Gourdis but i doubt he will get promoted... im pretty sure the club will promote polak as a fairytale story so you would think they wouldnt promote two talls.. in saying that i guess it will be Polak and Roberts... if this apparent injury to astbury looks to be long term you would suspect the club would promote Gourdis and throw him up front

Goo for me- would like to know more about how Gilligan has been going - and what he needs to do ? put on some muscle? kick a bagfull?
Polly probably an easy choice give our lack of tall fwds, would be brave to play Astbury and Griffith alongside Jack, but the more I think on it the better this looks - Astbury already showed he isnt completely out of place and higher hopes for Griffiths- (injury concerns?) if we go with Goo as a tall defender that can play fwd, would be keen on Relton or Alroy to add a bit of spark to our forward line. Relton may need a year at the Burgers to get up to speed? that said, Id love to see Polly having a good go - as opposed to Shultz-like one end of the ground to the other. We will love every goal!

Why exactly would they do that? What on earth would the club get out of using that as a reason for promoting anyone

If Polak is promoted, which it seems will be the case, surely you realise they will do so for pure football and game plan reasons. Only time will tell if the move is successful, and if not, some people's criticisms of promoting an older rookie over a youngster may well be justified. But I'm pretty confident it has nothing to do with fairy tale stories.

Remaining Spot on List: Rookie Elevation?

Has this been decided?

Word is because we have no more Veterans that there are two spots. One's been taken (by Polak), and the other is still free.

Who do we give it to?

Word is that Relton Roberts could be the next Liam Jurrah and is worth a dip - although can we play with two small forwards (with Nahas and Morton) .. keen to get the thoughts on anyone whose seen the practice games, as thats how the match commitee will likely make their choice -based on some of those matches....

Re: Remaining Spot on List: Rookie Elevation?

I would be tipping that the club would be vigorously trying to forecast the upcoming legal fortunes of TT and if they have the word that he will be given the nod in terms of good behaviour etc, would be tipping his name would be the one that is in the elevator. If that doesnt happen then RR would be a shoe in. ;)

COGGA
TT is already on the list. Here is a list of all the rookies!
Rookie list
1. Gilligan, Alroy
2. Gourdis, David
3. hicks, ROBBIE
4. contin, PATRICK
5. roberts, RELTON
6. westoff,
7. polak, GRAEME
8. oreilly,

2 positions available
Polak may have one?
And I would like to see RR as the second.

Re: Remaining Spot on List: Rookie Elevation?

It's too bad we don't need a player like Contin on the list. He was very good last Friday against the pies. He will dominate in the VFL.

A Blues-supporting friend of mine today asked me "Who the hell is Pat Contin? He got 106 in Dreamteam for you guys." I was absolutely astonished.

Can't wait to see Contin tearing up the VFL, eventually, when the time comes, we can unleash him into the big leagues.

Morton is like 186cm so definatley. Relton, Nahas and Morton gives us a great mix...

Relton (176cm), Riewoldt (193cm), Morton (186cm)

Taylor (189cm) / Asbury 194cm Polak (195cm) Resting Mid

The above will be our forward line this year IMO, however our future forward line hopefully will look like so...

Relton, Griffiths (200cm) Riewoldt

Taylor Astbury Morton

I can almost see Robin Nahas going back to play back pocket on the little blokes...or have him or Relton start on the bench

Looks like a potent forward line though!

Back to the rookie situation. I want Polak, Gourdis and Relton to all be elevated. To all the Polak haters the guy is 195cm a decent grab and 25 years of age give him a chance to get back thanks.

I think Gourdis deserves a go on the big stage...he looked good the one time he has been there against the Hawks so can we please elevate him!!!

Contin also looks good but there is no harm in leaving him in the VFL for one year considering our midfield depth when foley comes back:

Deledio, Cousins, Cotchin, Foley, Tambling, Collins, Thompson

Re: Remaining Spot on List: Rookie Elevation?

It should be Gourdis. He's done his time on the rookie list, looked very comfortable playing against Buddy in the NAB. Unleash Relton after the split round to cause some havok in the second half of the season.

Are you kidding, this would not happen under any circumstances. Jake King gets exposed in the air all the time and would probably double nahas in body strength also.

Worst suggestion I have heard on BF in years.

Otherwise though, good post :thumbsu:

Re: Remaining Spot on List: Rookie Elevation?

Goo or Contin as Roberts is too unfit. He's the one that needs to develope more. He'll kick a goal one minute and we'll watch him struggle as the opposition sets one up from out if defense with him with hands on hips

Re: Remaining Spot on List: Rookie Elevation?

He played backline in under/18's and would not be there for the one on one contests mate. He would be down there for the run off HB which I think could be fairly exciting as he really takes the game on. Pherhaps a gig on the wing even....also I can see him matching up on a player like Betts or Campbell from North!

Do like Nahas forward but just thinking we will almost have an overkill of small quick forwards and wouldn't be a bad idea to see if someone can play somewhere else.

agreed id be very happy to see if he dominates the vfl if he can have a good year in the vfl no problem with elevating him in 2011 to replace an older similar type player, looks like jane plays like tarzan though was really impressed with his attack and inside work

Re: Remaining Spot on List: Rookie Elevation?

You are all looking at Relton as just a forward he is actually a midfielder and he will give us depth both up forward and in the midfield. Just imagine Relts getting the ball off Simmo and dropping it into the goalsquare from the centre of the ground. If you were at the Collingwood practice game you would have seen Relts kicking a 55 metre lookaway bomb, bring on the flooding, with Taylor and Vickery kicking long goals we are looking good. So I vote Polak and Relts with Goudis for our first big rookie and Patty (Contin) our first small rookie elevations during the year.

Re: Remaining Spot on List: Rookie Elevation?

55 metre look away bombs, straight to the opposition in true tiger form haha.

Goudis should get the nod.

Relts is genuinely very exciting but after watching him today at Morwell, it will be a long time before he is ready to midfield at AFL Level. He was toatlly stuffed playing as a burst player in the forwardline. The boy has got serious skills but will would be better suited spending time at Coburg to get some kind of fitness base first. I also think Goo would be the most logical choice at the moment for the first and maybe Patty Contin for the second.

Who do we elevate off the rookie list?

Now the pre-season competition is over, its time to make decisions on the rookies we elevate to the primary list.

The choice is between Alroy Gilligan, David Gourdis, Pat Contin, Relton Roberts, Graham Polak, James O'Reilly, Nick Westhoff & Robert Hicks.

IMO it comes down to a choice in 4. They are talls, Graham Polak and David Gourdis and midfielders Relton Roberts and Pat Contin.

I do not believe we can elevate 2 talls or 2 mids. I believe its a case of 1 each.

My opinion of the talls is as follows:

Graham Polak: Been in the AFL system now for approx. 7 years. Has a good set of hands, generally been used as a key position defender. His role this pre-season season has been at full forward and has not been as successful as had been hoped.

David Gourdis: Third year on our list, originally picked up in the PSD, delisted and picked up as a rookie (its his second year). Been playing down back this season at Full Back and has performed better than I expected him to.

Based upon current form and potential upside I would be elevating David Gourdis, however, I believe Richmond have already made their mind up to elevate Graham Polak.

My opinion of the mids is as follows:

Relton Roberts:First year rookie at the club, mature age and has played senior footy in the Northern Territory. Has some serious speed and sublime kicking skills as his upside and his downside is he has serious fitness issues. Would be a massibe fan favourite that gets the Tiger fans excited.

Pat Contin: Also a first year rookie at the club, who also has excellent skills. He is an inside midfielder like Cotch and would provide back-up in an area we are not overly rich in options (Cotchin, Tuck). An in and under player he is very much the opposite of Relton Roberts.

There are arguments for both players to be elevated, I would elevate Pat Contin as he will add to our defensive pressure and provide midfield pressure, however, I think Relton Roberts (Scooby) will be elevated by Richmond as he will fire up the supporters to get behind the team.

Your thoughts and opinions please.

Re: Remaining Spot on List: Rookie Elevation?

Hey godzilla I was'nt saying he could go around a Collingwood player I said he did, as for Relts and his fitness I believe that his x factor will more than compensate for his fitness until he catches up with the rest of the guys.
Polak and Roberts elevated. I'd like Goudis and Relton elevated.
Then Contin, Gilligan, Hicks and then Westhoff.
