Who are the only music legends still around today?

^His post was taking the piss - sarcasm not noted...

He was basically saying that a shitload of people in this thread are claiming their own favourite artists as legends, when in reality they are probably good/talented/big/influential artists, but short of 'legend' status.

I'll take your word for it PK and I hope you are right.

109 million.

Sorry but there is no way thriller has sold 109 million albums world wide! It has sold between 60-65 million world wide! Also in my album list for Michael and Madonna I only included albums as solo artists! Michaelk Jackson as a solo artist has sold 200 million albums and is the most successful male artist Madonna is the most successful female artist selling 190 million albums!

no love for Celine Dion or Mariah Carey (completely understandable). But they have both sold similar numbers of records to Madonna, Mariah doing so in a considerably shorter period of time

Celine Dion and Mariah Carey have not sold as many albums as Madonna!

Like I have said Madonna is 1st with 190 Million albums sold worldwide, 2nd is Celine Dion Who has sold 163 million albums worldwide and third is Mariah Carey who has sold 147 million albums worldwide!

some great musicians been mentioned in this thread.

in terms of public reaction though, i still only can think of four who would evoke anything close to what has happened with MJ if they were to pass suddenly - those being Paul McCartney, Elton John, Bob Dylan and Madonna.

according to Sony BMG both Celine Dion and Mariah Carey have sold over 200 million albums world wide

Mick Jagger and David Bowie would be up there too.

Its ridiculous that there is a continuing arguement for Thom Yorke, you stand in Bourke Street and ask everyone who goes by who he is and you would be lucky to get 1 in 10 people.

In my opinion:
Aretha Franklin
Stevie Wonder
Paul McCartney
Madonna (sadly enough)
ACDC
Mick Jagger
Prince
Elton John
Bob Dylan

You have to remember that alot of Michael Jackson's media coverage would be due to how young he was when he died, and the suspicious circumstances. He's still a legend, but other musical legends wouldnt recieve that same amount of media coverage unless they died in some wacky circumstance.

Willie Nelson

Kris Kristofferson

3 quality artists right there.

Personally I would choose

Neil Young
Bob Dylan
Leonard Cohen
David Bowie
Wynton Marsalis

I am a huge fan of many more artists but from an inluential point of view, I don't think they stack up to the ones above.

Quoting record sales leaves me cold. I understand the theory behind quoting the figures like it proves something but I found Michael Jackson boring for at least the last 20 years.

Off the Wall was a great album but that was 30 years ago. Thriller, I acknowledge was groundbreaking, even if I am not a fan of it. Released in 1982 so that makes it 27 years ago.

I cannot think of anything that he has done in the last decade that has any worth musically. He became a ridiculous parody of himself. I am not celebrating his death or anything. I am ambivalent if anything.

You would find that that would be records sold (Album sales plus single sales)! If that is the Case then Madonna has sold over 310 million records as she has sold 190 million albums and 120 million singles! The top 5 highest selling Artists of all time according to media traffic are;

  1. THE BEATLES
  2. ELVIS
  3. MICHAEL JACKSON
  4. MADONNA
  5. ELTON JOHN
THESE ARTISTS ARE THE BIGGEST MUSIC ICONS OF ALL-TIME AND PROBABLY IN THAT ORDER TOO!

this thread is not about album sales.

Mariah Carey a music legend?

if he died tomorrow it wouldn't even get on the news in australia.

be that as it may, Mariah is one of the highest selling females of all time and has reasonable claim to being the most popular female singing in the world who's death would cause a stir. oh and she's much hotter than madonna (they both make crappy music though)

Beethoven and Mozart take issue with that last statement

NEWSFLASH - Popular football forum bigfooty.com is shut down due to server overloading. This was cause by poster LionsthenDaylight flooding the music forum with posts proclaiming Radioheads inferiority to Oasis given that Yorke couldn't out live the Gallaghers

With that top 5, I can clearly see the influence that 4 of those artists have had.

Madonna, whilst a pop icon, I can't see her influence being that significant on artists of today, besides Britney Spears...

Whilst sales are one aspect of what I believe should contribute toward a legend, influence is another that I put on similar ground, if not higher...

That is rather a silly statement! No other female Artist has had a bigger influence in popular culture as Madonna! She has empowered so many woman not only through her music but also from her image and is also known to be one of the most smartest business people in the Music Industry!

Madonna is easily up there as a music legend and icon along with The Beatles, Elvis and Elton John! No other Woman has had a bigger influence in Music the Madonna!

I agree while she's sold a lot of ordinary music her influence is minimal.

Certainly not in the same universe as MJ , Elvis or The Beatles whose influence is immeasureable.

as much as i like madonna before her there weren't too many female musicians who were so open about sex. maybe janis joplin was but i'm not overly familiar with a lot of her music.

whilst i agree she wasn't elvis, beatles like, but she did influence a lot of the female musicians.
