Who are the top 10 midfielders in the league?

You defensive enough? Petracca is obviously a star. No ones doubting that. Someone said he’s rated high because he gets 30 touches and three goals in games sometimes. He’s literally never done that. It doesn’t mean he isn’t a good player, he just hasn’t done that.
not defensive at all

Thankful more like it

1. Dusty
2. Fyfe
3. Neale
4. Danger
5. Boak
6. Bont
7. Petracca
8. Steele
9. Macrae
10. Dunkley

Zach Merrett & Luke Parker stiffest to miss imo

I don’t get why everyone has Martin #1?

sure, maybe the most talent and definitely the best big game player in the league. I’d rank him as the clear #1 midfielder on grand final day, however he coasts through the season and gets away with it due to Richmonds team success and I just cannot have him as my #1 midfielder until he gives 100% effort in every game.

I’d say right now, at this very point in time, Josh Dunkley and Jack Steele are the two best midfielders in the league. 100% effort every game, super consistent, run both ways, kick goals and tackle hard.

Hahahaha. Steele and Dunkley barely worthy of tying Dusty's boot laces. You know nothing about football if you don't have Dusty #1. Steele might be pushing for Top 10 mids, but zero chance he's top 5. Same with Dunkley..

Folks, it's not limited to top 10 this year.

By way of demonstration, clearly Martin's status as #1 encompasses performances from years past, including his three Norm Smith medals. No one is disregarding those.

It's up to individuals how you balance recent form with runs already on the board. But surely it goes without saying that's it's not based on 5 games in 2021 and nothing else.

In the finals, you’re probably right. But my post was targeted toward the present. And on current output to date throughout this season, can you really argue that Martin is ahead of either/both of them?

If it’s not recent form, and we are picking a list of top 10 on previous history then Pendlebury, Kennedy, Fyfe and Dangerfield leave guys like Steele, Oliver and Bontempelli for dead.

I’m picking mine on current form alone, and with that in mind I firmly believe that Martin is not #1.

However, ask me again in September and I might give you a different answer.

If you ignore finals, and state your criteria as "100% effort every game, super consistent, run both ways, kick goals and tackle hard." I don't see why you couldn't have Steele or Dunkley #1, especially if you are giving weight to 2021 form.

Well I think it needs to be based off recent form but that needs to be more than just 5 games this year surely?

What Pendles did 10 years ago is irrelevant currently but I think his past 12 months is still relevant.

For what it’s worth I don’t have an issue with you basing it off 22 rounds of footy and finals and not having Dusty number 1.

It's both, one weighed sensibly against the other.

If I asked you to name the comp's #1 key forward, would you insist it's Taylor Walker because all you're considering is this season?

I think most people are able to consider runs on the board, balanced against more recent form.

Well, that's just silly.

If you'd answered after R1, would your list be based on one game?

If it's based purely on this season, Mundy could well have the most Brownlow votes so I guess he's #1? No one thinks that is the case though, do they?

a) we are are 5 rounds in and I think that’s a large enough sample size to say we can judge midfielders on this current season alone without needing to go back to last seasons heroics

b) the things Mundy has done this seasonhave been nothing short of phenomenal, especially given his age and most believing he was past it, but the Brownlow isn’t the best indicator for these types of list. And I don’t think he would be leading it either.

and fwiw, yes I probably would have Tex right up there as the #1 forward in the league. Certainly higher than Cameron, Lynch and Kennedy that have the runs on the board in previous seasons but have been quieter this season for one reason or another.

this is all just my opinion, and it’s based on current form this season. I don’t think anyone could say one way or another that I’m definitively wrong. Laughing at having Steele and Dunkley ahead of Martin when they have without doubt been better so far in 2021 is what is silly.

Dusty isn’t just the best mid he’s the best player full stop and has been for 5 years, You could make a very compelling case he is the best player this century.

The 2 blokes you mentioned are fine players but not worthy of being mentioned in the same conversation at this point in time.

So Martin's three Norm Smith medals count for nothing?

Clearly there is still a "body of work" to be considered in these discussions.

But no one would sensibly argue that, for the purposes of this discussion, Mundy's form in five games counts for more than everything Martin has done in recent years. That's ridiculous.

Again, based on five games? That's ridiculous.

If you'd replied to this thread after R1, would you identify the league's #1 midfielder based on a single game?

That rationale makes for a ridiculous discussion.

Dusty is the best big game player without doubt, but he's not the undisputed best player/midfielder in the league.

9 out of 20 games last year, he had <=20 disposals and <=1 goal. At his best, he's possibly the most damaging player I've ever seen, but he goes missing way too often to be considered outright, unmatched number 1. For me, it's gotta be Fyfe, but it's highly debatable. It's rude to bag others out for having differing opinions in something so subjective
