Who do you think is the best indigenous person to ever play?

Given there is absolutely no consensus after all these posts how about I give a scenario to help...

5 mins to go in a Grand Final and your team is a goal or two behind.

For me it is Shaun Burgoyne. Every single time we are in that position he either kicks the goals or sets them up ...

If he was at your club you'd love him as I do. Just a superstar in every sense of the word. No cameos, no brownlows, just 300 games 4 premierships and the second highest winning percentage of any player ever to play 300 games.

Hard to choose.

Farmer revolutionised the way ruck men played, and how handball was used in the game. He was the model for what is now the mobile tall. He caned it in both VFL and WAFL. It's understandable he is considered the best.

In my time it would be Goodes, he carried brilliant form for a loooong time and his career was seriously decorated (both team and individual). Very consistent and capable of changing the cause of game when in his prime. Also played multiple roles. Franklin is really exciting to watch, but a bit too inconsistent. Cyril is also a gem, but he is burst player, and I don't rate small forwards as 'all time greats'. That and Maurice Rioli was better, IMO.

There would still be no consensus. :p

I would pick McLeod , others Long , many Franklin even many more would still pick Polly :)

Last 20 years I'd be looking at Goodes and McLeod. Shaun Burgoyne not far behind, if at all.

No argument with those mentioned but I suggest you forgot Gavin Wanganeen, his premierships & taking on the role as Ports inaugural captain, first indigenous player to 300 AFL games, & a few more SANFL games.
Lucky enough to see him play in his first year with the Port Magpies, before he was drafted by the Bombers.:thumbsu:

I played a few games with him in U15's, was amazing to see him first hand, even in that age group. Wasn't the best player for total output in our team, which he only played for intermittently, but when he got near it, it really was something else. Definitely did forget him, he's right up there as well.

Can someone tell me why Burgoyne isn't considered better than Goodes? McLeod I can see the case but there is no way I'd rather Goode's than Burgoyne. Goode's is a superstar but Burgoyne and McLeod have shown to be another level again.

Great record over his career. I never thought he was the best player in his teams though. If you weren't the best in your team I find it difficult to call them the most talented indigenous player of all time.

It's like people who only use stats sheets to rate players.

I feel his two brownlows are influencing people here.

McLeod and Burgoyne could do anything and their best 5 games eclipse Goodes best game with the exception of the 2012 Grand Final where he was unbelievable ...

And who he plays for now is influencing yours?

He definitely is a quality player. I don't think nobody has forgotten him just that others come to mind easier. And maybe that's a sign that Burgoyne plays in a team team rather than having to star individually and bring his side up to standard

Ok I'll say it this way.

If you could have an 18 year old Goodes or Buddy not one coach in the league would choose Goodes.

Same team and all ...

Because he's a large step behind him, which pretty much everyone bar Hawks supporters recognise.
