Who has the cheapest fans in the league?

At the start of the year West Coast had a 6 year waiting list for full membership.

I wonder if that'll have thinned a bit at the end of the season.

We had 57,000 members last year if you include all those on the waiting list etc.

If you are on the waiting list u still get a membership not a seated one so we would still have 44 000

The AFL does not count non ticketed members in their final figures.

The same criteria is applied through all clubs, theirs no ifs or butts in the finaal figures the afl publishes.

I maybe wrong as i only read this on another thread but the standard the AFL applies is 5 games entry equalls a ticketed membership but they have allowed the tassie memberships to count for Hawthorn.

With the membership figures which teams fans are the cheapest in the league. Essendon and Collingwood rave about having the most supporters, but look at their membership numbers. Not really that many considering the supposed number of supporters. Would that be supporters who aren't actually willing to front up their hard earnds to actually buy a membership.

Not memberships, but I think the fact that all sports stores and retailers stock more Essendon and Collingwood brand products than any other club speaks volumes for how much our fans spend. I used to work at Rebel, Essendon and Collingwood gear sold at more than 3 items to 1 of any other clubs. A Victorian store obviously.

I think a big reason why well supported clubs dont necessarily translate into massive membership numbers is because supporters are complacent and don't need to worry about their clubs future.

When its not a matter of survival, some fans are less likely to make the "donation" to the club. For example a Collingwood supporter who doesnt get a chance to go very often is less likely to feel obligated to "support" the club in this way if they believe the popular opinion that we have more money than we know what to do with.

Whereas if your club is in trouble or has been in the past, there is a greater need to buy a membership if you want them to stick around.

It's probably why Richmond struggle to get their supporters to sign on

Sucking ass for 25 years probably another major factor.

If the Tigers don't take too long to get back as a real force they will have massive supporter growth but if they are in the pit for a long time and I mean Melbourne or Geelong long time then you get the generational changes where it becomes harder to hold onto linage support and kids change clubs due to a lack of success, kids are suckers for something shiny.
