This debate seems familiar, reckon I have answered this before.

Collingwood is the answer, * is the most hated and Tigers wish they were relevant to the discussion.

I hate Essendon the most so I voted that way but in reflection it's probably the Pies for what MEB_ wrote:

To me, a real 'rivalry' includes respect for your opponent. I have no respect for Essendon.

Collingwood it is!

Every time I've sat in a mixed crowd at a Carlton-Collingwood game the banter and the respect shown between fans has always been top notch. I know there have been incidents between the two clubs fans but never once to me. Conversely, I've had several bad incidents with Bombers fans to the point where they've been escorted out of the stadium and the security/police have asked if the Carlton fans in our area would like to make a statement (no one ever did once they'd been ejected) but multiple occasions is more than enough.

I have similar feelings to the Pies rivalry that I do with Richmond over the past decade or so. We've both struggled so when we have had those great contests it's been great rivalry rather than a scary one. Richmond supporters near my group were quick to congratulate us on our epic comeback in the final rather than a "**** you Carlton you cheating campaigners" like *FC fans would have been.

My sentiments exactly. Big difference between "rivalry" and "hatred"...
I don't think there's a bigger historical rivalry in football than Carlton Collingwood.
I don't feel a rivalry with Richmond, for the same reasons you've stated about Essendon. No respect for them at all.
I never really disliked Essendon, I saw them in the same context as the Pies. But after all the shit they've done recently, I can't cop them either now.

Collingwood for me...
You and a few others have got this right.

Lets face it until the Carlton hater went and coached Essendon* they were hardly in our thoughts until we played them.

Richmond have always hated us because we have always been better then them (team song excepted).

The rivalry with the Pies is long standing and enduring. It will continue for as long as AFL is played.

I see many votes for collingwood, I wonder... If somehow the unthinkable were to happen and collingwood and * were to play in the grand final, would you be hoping collingwood would win?

For me * are our greatest rival as we are both on 16, it's a race to 17, always has been. If all 3 of us were on 16 though, then I would pick collingwood.

Richmond have always been irrelevant to me, they were never a threat when I was growing up and watching footy (late 90s -00s) it's only recently they have some firepower, even then I don't give a hoot about them.

If it was Collingwood V Bombers I'd be barracking for the Pies.

There was something that happened in a grand final between Richmond and Carlton in the early 70s that is etched into my psyche from when I was a boy that means I will always hate that dirty team of low life thugs more than most.
Balme shifts uneasily in his chair.......

Would be nice although if we actually had a decent game between us and the pies once in awhile . Can't remember a decent epic last man standing battle with the pies in the last 15 or so years . Usually not a lot of pressure run of the mill games of recent times . We had about a dozen game lead on them about 10 or so years ago now I think it's all square .

Imagine if Carl and Coll play off in a GF one day, in the future. That would be HUGE! It would be double, triple the normal build up and hype for a GF.

I agree there is a lot of hatred btw Carl and Ess, but Carl and Coll have something deeper.

It's funny when I was a kid I used to think that the two clubs respective colours/jumpers played some sort of minor role in the rivalry. Coll are B&W and while Carl are navy let's face it it sort of looks kinda black (and white). Carl and Coll games, esp in the good old days, were just black and white doing battle. It was sort of classic , if that makes sense.
