Who is the best mark of the ball ever?

Stewart “Buckets” Loewe.
When you can fit 12 eggs in the palm of your hand I guess it gives you an advantage marking a Sherrin.
Terrible shot for goal which he did tidy up as his career progressed but boy could he take a mark.

Lowe kicked 594.410 = 59.1%

That doesn't include out on the full or shots on goal not making the distance etc.

John Coleman

“He would sprint into a space and mark or he would somehow spring “Phoenix” like, head and shoulders above these perplexed backmen to mark. And it used to happen four or five times a game. This great champion footballer was unstoppable taking spectacular mark after spectacular mark and finishing it off with goals.” - Rod Oaten, The Footy Almanac
I agree with this, albeit well before my time.

Though I'm astounded we're on to the 3rd page and yet to see a nomination for Tony Lockett?

Players averaging 10 or more per game over a season are the ones you'd consider. Dempsey did it twice.
True, but there's a degree of difficulty marker too that comes into play when comparing ruckmen with CHFs in the old game.

Ruckmen tended to play a kick behind the ball, and as such generally weren't as well-defended as a tall forward.

Dempsey was just before my time but people raved about his ability.

Pre-injury Kelvin Templeton was incredible.

Jeremy Howe is outstanding among current players, especially if you make the comparison pound for pound (Billy Picken would score well on this metric).

Brian Lake underrated too - I think he broke a league record against North Melbourne one game.

First thought Stewart Lowe

Biggest hands in footy ever? Guess they don’t do hand size stats though….

No chance - would be discriminatory hand shaming....
Actually I remember that The Age ran a life-size print of his hand on the back page of the Sports section one Sunday.

I was talking with a mate about who the best pack marks were, and going over the names one thing stood out, some of the best wernt that all. Wayne Carey is my number 1 and he was only 192cms. Looking at those players who were dominant pack markers that wernt that tall, James Hird has to be there at 188cms.
Nick Riewoldt was the number 2 on my list, and he was only 193cms.

Saints have had a few contested makers. Loewe is up there.

Tony Lockett was good on a lead but definately had his fair share of contested marks.

Wayne Carey as already mentioned on here is a good pack marker along with Ablett senior
