Who will be the next captain at each club?

Mitchell will be in with a shout at the Hawks as captain after Richie hands it over. Hodge is a natural leader and arguably is on-field leader anyway without the moniker of captaincy. Mitchell, however, probably has the slight edge on media polish that Hodge lacks.

Still, we're in a relatively good position regarding this issue when there are two clear-cut potential captains emerging at the one time for the club.

Clement/Rocca may captain the side for a year or two after Buckley

Licuria may be the dark horse, even Holland

I said about 3-4 years ago I thought Josh would be our future captain and Ben Johnson VC...think this is still a good thing

After neitz I reckon we'll see

Captain: Bruce
Vice Captains: McLean, Rivers, Davey

but in my OPINION it should be

Captain: TRapper
Vice Captains: Bruce, McLean, Rivers

I would LOVE to see Travis as captain. Two years ago, no way, but I think he's taken that next step in terms of maturity and leadership and would do an excellent job. But I would equally be happy for McLean to take up the mantle.

Sadly the club will probably promote Ling as Captain, despite him playing poor footy and being injured.

Ben Graham looks better everyday and that's almost an indictment from where sit.

Would of loved that idea about a year ago, but now....Was wondering about you blokes...would young Gary Jnr be in the mix? Must admit I havent watched a lot of Cats games this year, but does he seem the type that could take the leadership? Big fan of Mooney too, but the 'dirty sniper thugs' that I love so much don't usually get the nod...makes me think that was the reason J Brown at my club was really pressured to stop the wayward stuff (although I think the job of 'chief thug' was then given to Charman, who is playing the best footy of his career, despite giving away more free kicks than anyone in the league...yes! win for the Lions:thumbsu:).

And Bulldogs guys? Someone mentioned R Murphy...would he be in with a shot? Would love to see Murph as captain of the Bulldogs, but I am bias since I think he is a footballing god...although Johnson is a absolute champ aswell so i'd stick with him as long as he is there.

Sure i don't watch many Geelong games, mainly because I am not interested in them, but everytime that I do, Mooney seams to end up in some kind of controversial incident, whether it be a sharp punch behind play, or a hip and shoulder to the head. A lepper will never change his spots, and I really just cant comprehend how a club would want him as the face of them. He is just too undisciplined (moreso than S.Thompson) to be captain, and they would just be following in the ilk of King (who used to be good) of dud captains. Give it to Chapman or somebody who at least deserves it.

Well, he sort of is captain atm.

Given that all my blokes are 29-30, I'd be looking at these guys doing it for perhaps two years, form and injuries permitting.

B1 is a show, as is perhaps Buchanan, Goodes (who'll be 28 in 2008) or from left field Sean Dempster. I'd have no problem with any of the first three, although admittedly there would need to be improvement from the Dumpster. I do reckon though he could be the man.

Roos seems to like the multi-captain thing so if he is still coach when it comes to replacing one or all of the current trio I could see him appointing Bolton / Bolton / Goodes as a replacement trio.

Have to confess the Dempster suggestion is from way way left field. I'm not prepared to say he can't develop into captaincy material but at this stage he's not yet demonstrated he will become a long-term automatic first team choice. Also, he seems like a pretty introverted kind of chap, especially out on the field. If I was going to pick one of the younger brigade as a possible future captain it would be Malceski (assuming he sticks around at the club).

Some clubs have an obvious succesor.

Some clubs already have captains that will be there for a while so the next captain has yet to emerge.

In many cases, the choice of the next captain will depend on how much longer the current captain does the job.

I'm sure there will be a lot of disagreemennt, but here's my list of speculative choices:

Adelaide: Simon Goodwin
Brisbane: Jon Brown
Carlton: Lance Whitnall
Collingwood: Josh Fraser (who else is there?)
Essendon: David Hille
Fremantle: Matthew Pavlich
Geelong: Matthew Scarlett
Hawthorn: Luke Hodge
Kangaroos: Shannon Grant
Melbourne: Cameron Bruce
Port: Kane Cornes
Richmond: Brett Deledio
St. Kilda: Nick Dal Santo
Sydney: Jude Bolton
West Coast: Dean Cox or someone not yet at the club
Bulldogs: Mitch Hahn

There are a few that I have no idea on.
Would anyone care to update this list?

Melbourne will probably give it to bruce for a year or two and then McLean will take over.

Answer honestly. How many games of these clubs do you watch per season?

And Cox???????????????? He's older than Judd!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want to be taken seriously, I suggest you drop your chardonnay and start watching 8 games of footy each weekend starting March 2007.

Who do you think the Kangas' next captain will be?

I admitted that there were a couple of clubs I wasn't sure about.

As for Cox and Judd, did you read the qualifier I included?

The next WC captain will probably be someone not yet at the club, because Judd will do it for 10 years.

If Judd leaves, then Cox would be a great candidate.

Do you understand?

Amongst WC supporters, im suprised no one has mentioned the name of Beau Waters to be honest.

For mind, he is the man for the job if Judd leaves (which i think, as hard as it to admit it, is actually possible given having now completed "the puzzle" at WC) .

There seems to be this unspoken belief amongst many that Dean Cox is a feit a compli to be made Captain, in the case of Judd leaving. I think that Cox is a great leader already, and has the potential to be a great captain of the Eagles....but in my opinion Beau Waters is an absolute, absolute gun on the rise who could lead for the next ten years, as opposed to the three, four or five you would get from an Embley or a Cox.

The bloke is basically a left footed clone of his coach, and has proved he packs the testicles to be a hero on the grandest stage of all...:thumbsu:

My only concern would be over off field stuff, but Waters appears to be the sort of bloke who would be matured by the role so i dont suspect it would be a problem long term.

Good question. I reckon we'll know the answer at the end of the 2007 season - depends on which of the next wave stand out the most.

Thommo looks the logical choice & our stand out performer in the media, but if he's happy just kicking goals - don't rock the boat I say.

Archer would make a great skipper, but he's going into his last season.

Wells, Harvey & Rawlings would probably the most likely at the moment.

If the Power continue to appoint new captains when they reach the 27-28 age mark, I expect Kane Cornes to be the next captain in 4 years time. Tredrea will captain til he's 31-32.

If they appoint a new captain in the next 2-3 years (assuming Tredrea gives it up) and they appoint a younger player, I would like to think someone who represents what Port Adelaide is all about gets it. Hard work, courage, determination, passion, pride, then I think someone like a Danyle Pearce or a Matt Thomas gets it. Maybe even Adam Thomson.

Who do you think the Kangas' next captain will be?

Grant will never be captain, I could go into detail why but I wont. :p

Rawlings steps up and captains the side when Simpson is not around, given Simpson is going to give away the captaincy (if not the game) at the end of next year I assume Rawlings will get it for the short-term.

i have always said that beau is bona fide future captain material - the coaches when they drafted him said his leadership qualities were prominent, and is a likely club captain

one thing stopping him is the relatively young age of judd - who has the potential to be a very long term captain, leaving not much of a window for our man bojangles

hurn would be the other one - who has already held a captaincy role before, and at 18 has more of 'window' than beau does...

aside from those two - our future captain may not even be drafted yet as people have said, because provided judd is still here in the west - he will remain captain for a loooong time

I think Cousins is the next captain of WC: that is, it will revert to him until retirement, and then Judd will resume after that (if he's still at the club). If thats the case, the captain after Judd probably hasn't been recruited yet.

Chris Judd ;)

Actually I have a feeling Trav Cloke will be a leader at the club. He seems a serious smart kid. Your tip about Fraser is pretty much on the money though.

I've never heard Cloke and smart in the same paragraph
