Who's the worst coach of all time?

After losing the Fremantle job, Drum moved back to Victoria, and took up a position as coach of the Bendigo Diggers team in the VFL. The situation was similar to Fremantle – the Diggers, a relatively new club, lost the first eleven games of the season. At the end of the season, Drum decided to retire from football

Terry Wallace. Just because he spins so much utter shit and destroyed Richmond.

can't believe it took three pages for wallace at richmond to be mentioned:
- tambling in front of franklin, the terrible ball handling and disposal skills at the tigers at this time etc etc.

His 5 year deal, whilst by itself not such a bad idea, set the tigers back 10.

Fair to say that ol' Schimma might have struggled a bit considering what Pagan did with the same when he took over, plus Sydney needed to get supercoach Barassi in to teach the Swans how to play footy again after Buckenara was finished with them. Judge was pretty good at Hawthorn so a bit harsh to nominate him. Knights is a bit harder to figure out, he was goneski as soon as Hird decided to take over, whenever that was. I'm guessing it was some time before Knights officially got the arse.

This thread has been pretty harsh on Neesham.
He was very innovative and had a lot of ideas that were years ahead of their time. He won a premiership in his first year as a coach at WAFL level and kept Claremont as a powerhouse in that league for years despite the constant player drain to the AFL.
He basically took a squad of WAFL players (mostly Claremont) to the AFL and managed to win nine games in his first year at that level.
Compare that to Gold Coasts first year while thinking about the lack of assistance comparitively and you have an idea about how good a coach Neesham actually was.
He didn't have the cattle and unfortunately was (along with whatever kind of footy dept they had) absolutely terrible come recruiting/trading/drafting time.

Matty Primas...anyone?

Admittedly he inherited a poor list...but...'
A fish out of water.:
so little understanding of the forward press.
So ruthless towards delisting the older player that he has destroyed team moral...
playing Rookies before they are ready..
can i go on.?

In my memory Tim Watson, was brought in to take a club with a good list that just fell short to the next level and destroyed it.

Also Peter Rhode wasn't much chop

But I hear KB was pretty crap.

Granted circumstances were probably well and truly out of his control, but, Alan McConnell whilst he did the best he could, just couldn't get Fitzroy going - twice.

Surely not serious. How much can one do in 11 games (all as caretaker coach)?

Coaching career

1995 - 3 games (Rounds 20-22) - replaced Bernie Quinlan
1996 - 8 games (Rounds 15-22) - replaced Mike Nunan. Fitzroy was ejected from the AFL after Round 22.

There's no way that Neesham should be on this list. The bloke was victim of his own brilliance, as he didn't have the right blend of players. Freo should have let him finish his 5 year plan. Couldn't have done any worse than Drum.

Worst coach: Terry Wallace for destroying Richmond.

Bernie Quinlan by a country mile.

Genuinely had no coaching skills or credentials - and no clue at all.

I reliase Fitzroy had no chance but some of the stories coming out after he was let go were tragicomedy at its best.

I remember him being interviewed (as coach) saying someting along the lines he didnt want his players playing roughly....as it was just unecessary. (no not Dirty.. he really meant 'being rough'!!). I knew right there and then the Roys were totally ****ed.

but worst coach - who was the guy who coached Footscray in 1978,,, I forget the name but remember the sense that he was hopeless.

apart from having no money and a poor list to work with apparrently KB's main flaw as a coach was the training programme: at a time when Hawthorn would train for 90minutes totally flat out, KB would have the tiges training for 2-3 hours at 3/4 pace..... and you play how you practice, right?

Agree with the calls of Garry Buckenara.

Hopeless record, his plan to turn Sydney around was to train the players harder and harder until they started to win. Players hid from him at training because they knew they would be too sore to play if they finished the session, while one poor youngster had to be taken home by his old man due to him suffering some sort of breakdown (IIRC he was forced to train injured).

Lo and behold it's Brad Tunbridge everybody.

There was a lot more going on with Sydneys playing list at the time than just training issues and some of them couldn't run out games because they also had a group who were most undisciplined in their off field endeavour.

This pre dated the age of "Welfare officers" and the like, it was the coach's responsibility Buckenara's greatest failing was being unable to combat the party mafia. Ronald Dale had no such problems.
