Who's the worst coach of all time?

Someone earlier said Graeme Gellie, now don't get me wrong he wasn't great but he never had the cattle to work with. Now Timmy Watson took a side over that had played in the Grand Final less than 18 months earlier and within two years had them taking the wooden spoon. That is impressive.

Maybe he was the first to try tanking for draft picks! Nobody would have guessed that behavior back then! So Timmy may have been the most innovative of all modern coaches!

Maybe not the worst, but possibly the most stupid. Ken Judge. I will never forget the time the Hawks were 4 goals down at 3/4 time to the Crows at AAMI, and kicking into the breeze in the final term.

Rather than taking a few risks and try to win the game, Judge threw everyone into defence to make sure we didn't lose by 10 goals. Shocker of a coach.

Bernie Quinlan
Grant Thomas - used Matt Rendell as his tactician.
Buckenara
Shaw
Frawley
Royce Hart
John Devine
Bluey Hampshire
Alan Joyce - my one legged blind deaf grannie could have coached that Hawks team.

Ken Judge was horrendous. Terrible people skills, appalling game plan, ridiculous recruiting, inablity to correctly rate players ( brought half of East Fremantle with him )...he had it all. The decision of West Coast to chase and appoint him as coach was a blunder of mind blowing proportions. The high draft pick he " earned " the Eagles ( with which they grabbed Judd ) was his only contribution.

Yep, hated that we ended with him, and I don't think a single player liked him during his time at WCE. However, the contribution he gave to our club was worth it.

Interesting that Rhode and Connally have been mentioned yet moved onto football department roles , which they may be worst at .

Neil Balme was a terrible coach but has done a great job at Geelong in his admin capacity.

Robert Shaw- Took a great list and ruined it in the space of 18 months
Neesham- No idea at all, water polo game plans don't translate
Connoly- Offensive little dwarf with no management skills
Rohde- Offensive non-dwarf who continues to show his lack of clues
Primus- Enough said, but could surely only be up from here
Geischen- Terrible coach worse in his umpiring stewardship
Watson- 'Well it looked easy as a commentator'
Drum- All the charisma of a dung beetle
Tony Shaw- Proof that favourite sons are not necessarily the answer
Wayne Brittain- Another so called footy genius that got stage fright

Garry Buckanara for the swans in 1991-92.

Before a game vs the bears

"Ok boys just go out and try your best"

and that was it.

Gary Ayres was the worst coach in Geelong's History....ended the career's of Champions Ablett Snr, Couch, Bairstow and then left the list in shambles....went to Adelaide and did the same thing

I reckon a guy who would take an Irishman who can't play the game into a final rather than playing an actual ruckman would have to be fairly well up there in the coaching lunacy stakes.

Gary Ayres coached a side to a Grand Final. If Chris Scott is a master coach for what he did last year, I don't see how Ayres can be labeled one of the all-time worst.

The stock answer when I ask people more seasoned than myself seems to be Royce Hart.
