Why didn't MFC select Jack Darling??

Shuey does look good, but I think Blease will bring something to our team that Shuey can't. Blease is electrifiyingly quick. Shuey is more of an inside get the ball 30 times a game type of player. We already have Sylvia, Moloney, Trengove, Scully and Gysberts who can all do that. Blease will provide the outside run and carry with pace game that we need.

spot on, if Blease comes on as we hope he will be a key player for us

You obviously haven't seen enough of Shuey.

Yes he can get inside ball, but he has a turn of foot and can run and carry, has kicked some great run and carry goals from wing/half back.

The other weapon he has that others you listed don't is that he is the best dual sided player since Aker, can kick just as well on his left from outside 50, he has actually kicked the majority of his goals this year on his left. His foot skills are elite.

If he can play 20 games this year he will be regarded much higher by years end.

darling has played one pretty good game, but he is already much further ahead in his physical development as well!!

He's actually played 4 pretty good games.

I'm ecstatic that he slipped to us, but it's waaaaaay to early to say that the Dees should have picked him over Cook, or that club X should have picked him over player Y.

I'll have a good look tomorrow but how have the weagles been playing him. is he pushing upfield with Kennedy and Lynch or staying back and K + L push up field?

To be fair Darling has had 4 really good games, and I thought you took Watts in 2009? you mean Cook who was the bloke you took instead?

no, watts was in 08 although at the same age as 09 draftees

someone else compared darling to watts

darling may well end up being a better player than cook, i'll wait till i see him play an afl game first

darling had one very good game, his others were good for a fist year

his last one was a afl standard good game

Wanted us to draft Blease. Am now super happy with Shuey and he is exactly what we need.

Facts are you can't make judgements to early. Darling looks like he could end up a very, very good player. Cook is yet to play an AFL game though so how could we compare them?

Darling is the type of player we need, and as an 18yo is already holding his own at AFL level. Cook is a CHF prospect in the same mould as Jack Watts (I am hoping he has more courage and fire in his belly though)

I understand this point.

Darling is ready to impact now, he can also play as a solid marking target in the f50 who applies great defensive pressure.

Both Watts and Cook are athletic, slim, project CHF prospects.

If looking at it from this perspective then yes Darling may have been the better choice.

Two things though, from all reports Cook is looking good so what happens then if Watts does not come on quite as expected? You have one very promising CHF in Cook and a talented player in Watts who is yet to find a definite role with the side.

Now I know it may not be a popular position to take on this board but good KPF's need aggression or at least to attack the contest and ball hard. Look at all the top KPF at the moment. Buddy, J. Brown, both Reiwoldts and Cloke. Also up and comers like Dawes and Kennedy. All have big tanks and present or attack the ball and contest pretty relentlessly (in the air and sometimes at ground level). I just don't see this in Jack atm.

CHF is a more important position than the more stay at home role some KPF play (though the role is more loosely defined these days). So perhaps it is a good thing you also drafted Cook.

Have to admit, I did enjoy yelling out "You coulda had him, Melbourne!" every time Jack kicked a goal, took a pack mark or laid a crunching tackle:D

Still think it's massively unfair to judge Darling vs Cook this early though. One was drafted as a ready-made player, one as a project.

Darling slipped through to 26 because of his off field issues. He was highly rated but clubs didn't want to risk it. Looks like a risk worth taking but we were not the only ones that dismissed him.

Please take note,

melbourne did not recruit jack darling because they believe that lucas cook is the better player for our club long term
