Moved Thread Why does Eddie decide what Jumper Port Adelaide can or can't wear?

It's pretty basic gws. They're not allowed to wear the prison bars because it's not their jumper. They are the Port Power not the Port Adelaide Magpies. If Port want to stay in the national competition then they need to accept this. It can't be healthy for their football club obsessing over Collginwood's jumper all the time.

Absolutely correct.

Collingwood has the AFL behind it regarding this discussion, so as far as the AFL competition is concerned, Collingwood have the exclusive rights to the B&W stripes because of they got there first in this competition.

Having said that, this is where the VFL becoming the default National Competition has an inherent flaw, in that it automatically conveys historical superiority to Victorian clubs, under the guise of a National Competition. Can't change it, so I guess that is that. Who cares that Collingwood actually commenced playing in Victoria in b&w diagonal stripes (source - Argus), or that it took the Magpies moniker after a trip to play in SA and they liked the Piping Shrike SA emblem? Means nothing in this competition, AFL makes the decisions and we have to abide by them.

Although I am interested as to how Port Adelaide Magpies played in the Foxtel Cup (an AFL sanctioned competition) wearing the prison bar guernsey. Did they have to ask permission from AFL / Collingwood for that?

Completely hypothetically, I wonder what would happen if a higher authority (eg court challenge or state government law change) said that within South Australia, Port Adelaide as a club (not the AFL team or the SANFL team) has the right to its trademark and a National competition could not play in SA without meeting the requirements of that law. It wouldn't do that, but could it do that?

Your argument might carry some weight except for the fact that the tradition and history of the Port Power started in 1997. As a Collingwood supporter I have no problem with other clubs celebrating their tradition, I do however have an issue with clubs inventing it.

You argument might carry some weight if it had any basis in fact.

If you can't tell the difference between a football club and a football team, then you shouldn't comment in a public forum.

Do people realise that Port Adelaide in the SANFL wore Prison bars, not just black and white vertical stripes

another fool. the Port Adelaide that competed in the SANFL is the same Port Adelaide that moved into the AFL in 1997 and competes today. The moniker is insignificant.

you might as well argue that the Geelong Pivotonians aren't the same club as the Geelong Cats, or even the Geelong from the early 2000s aren't the same club as the Geelong Cats now because they changed their official name from Geelong FC to the Geelong Cats FC.

Same goes for Melbourne from Fuschias to demons, Essendon from same olds to bombers, South Melbourne from bloods to swans, to Sydney swans, etc.

A new Port Adelaide was formed in 1997 to compete in the SANFL and called the magpies to maintain the heritage in the SANFL.

It can't be healthy for their football club obsessing over Collginwood's jumper all the time.

at least you've got that right. Collginwood would probably be the club's name if they ever left the AFL to play in another league. Eddie owns shit.

Heh.. So Sydney can totally take on all of 'Blood's culture' yet, Port Adelaide's AFL team is a completely new club to the one that played 100+ years in the SANFL...

Logic -

Disclaimer.. I f*cking loathe Port Adelaide, but it does shit me when people troll with the est 1996 rubbish...

I would hate it if Norwood had managed to get the 2nd AFL license, and because they would have had to change colours to avoid a clash with Melbourne (I assume) doesn't mean their history would have dissapeared....

Because Collingwood have a trademark on black and white used in a vertical patten.

Eddie's next stop is basketball refs then Juventus

Port Adelaide-1870.
Collingwood Magpies-1892.
Sorry Ed but Port can wear the black and white any bloody time they like.
Vlad "but,but but"

Is Collingwoods away guernsey just the inverted colours of their normal one? Reminds me a lot of how Essendon used to have a slightly fatter red stripe until the afl forced them to change.

Nice rant but Collingwood wore Black and white stripes before Port no matter how you measure it and that includes the renamed AFL in 1990 that Port were not a part of. On what basis could you possibly argue there was Victorian bias?

Given it is their jumper and not being the AFL that seems a pretty silly question.

Because this is the AFL, not SANFL. If they want to wear a black and white stripped jumper **** off back to the SANFL.

Hmmm, unless Port changed to the prison bars after Collingwood did?
