a "national" 2nd div officially confirmed for soccer. 8 clubs have been selected. 5 Teams in Sydney and 3 in Melbourne.

probably smart to limit travel costs by having just 2 cities involved. No promotion or relegation at this stage until the league settles.
Looking at the teams its like the old NSL has been resuscitated and bought back to life.

Yeah. No Melb. Knights, which I found strange.

They are all the biggest clubs outside the A-League. Heck, I would go further and say a couple of them are bigger than the A-league ones in terms of support. If this isn't successful(or sustainable, probably the better word here) , then no 2nd div will ever be.

Note that whilst theres 8 teams (5 from NSW and 3 from Victoria), another 2-4 teams will be added before the soccer second division competition starts

new team in the A-league. Auckland.

2nd time a team from Auckland has been in the Australian League. First one flopped badly on and off the field. The Owner is the guy who owns part of Bournemouth in the EPL and the Las Vegas Knights in the NHL

Bill Foley is his name. Billions in his name. I can understand why this has come from the blue and come about quickly. Seems little risk with an actual big untapped market. He has business interests in NZ supposedly.

Kind of ironic this being announced at roughly the same time as the 2nd division.

It demonstrates why there is virtually no chance of promotion and relegation between the divisions. Imagine Auckland in Div 2? This dude would pull his money out within nanoseconds.

yeah. If you are paying a license fee, you would expect to stay in the big league.

they would have to do away from that model.

Gina wants the Federal government’s assistance to host the Commonwealth Games across Gold Coast and Perth. In the letter to the government, Gina also has a go (in my opinion, justified) at Albo’s funding of NRL in PNG.

“We believe it would be a far more popular decision than the recently announced $600 million for Papua New Guinea football, and not as expensive.

“Perhaps some of that expenditure could be redirected to improve Australian facilities for the Commonwealth Games and later Olympic Games in Queensland

She makes a very valid point, the problem she'll run into is albo doesn't have a personal vested interest in expanding the comm games as his favourite sport like he does with the NRL funding.

If the comm games go to gold coast hopefully they can get some better transport to heritage bank stadium.

Comm Games won't help keep China out of PNG.

From January 2024, all ICC tournaments in Australia will screen on Amazon Prime, including the World Cup and the Test Championship. Am presuming that the anti-siphoning laws will mean that a Free To Air tv network, will show the Australian cricket team playing in these tournaments and the final

No, that only applies if the ICC event is played in Australia (and New Zealand).

The only chance of games ending up on FTA would be if nobody subscribes to Amazon Prime, who then feel compelled to on sell the rights to recoup some of their losses.

Thanks for the clarification- I had assumed that all Australian team matches at the cricket World Cup (50 overs) would have been televised as happened in India recently

The big bash league - cricket Australia is reducing the number of BBL games, in the hope of recapturing the interest of the players and audiences

Looks like the BBL is still in the doldrums crowd wise as only 13,000 bothered to turn up to the SCG last night.

The sellouts of a few years back are a distant memory it seems.

The only club and sport that consistently gets good crowds in Sydney is the swans. Amazing considering they get zero media coverage in Sydney too.

Yes, imagine if the Swans were given a decent media coverage say equal to the amount the poorer supported RL teams get esp in the Daily Telegraph the SCG would be permanently sold out.

BBL game called off in Geelong for an unsafe pitch.

Last night, the game was called off due to rain. It's fair to say the start of the new BBL season has been a bit soft.

Ch.7 will be furious about tonight's shambles. Geelong might not get to host another BBL game for a while either. It looked like a soft(attendance-wise) and very pissed crowd at the ened.

I still think they have started the season a little early. It used to start with a bang and end with a whimper.

The BBL have lucked out tonight. The Stars on a 3 game winning streak, Renegades needing to win to stay alive. I thought this could’ve drawn a strong crowd tonight in the end. Maybe a 35-40K with a nice warm evening. Maybe more with Stars renaissance. Bummer!

On to 2024!

Was never going to happen as no one wants the Comm Games that are dying before our eyes!
